Paul..Well, I'm not sure......
Webhamster..Look, let me explain...its good for business and you have to have it
Paul..Thanks, but no, I don't want to do it.
Webhamster..Paul, I'll put it to you in simple terms. You have to have it. The community needs to see consistency among the moderators. Just because its purely commercial and so full of security risks Al Queda could fly a 747 through it is neither here nor there, doesn't give you a let out. We believe its for the best. You agree now, don't you?
Paul..No, not really.
Webhamster..Then I'm sorry, you clearly don't want to part of this anymore. Goodbye.

Many a true word spoken in jest
Typically I don't have any issues with the majorty of the mods, they perform a thankless task for no real recognition, and from what I've seen, their hands are tied from actions other than removing posts and/or threads, pity really as if the power was extended a bit as I feel that we'd not have such a problem with trolls.
From the times I've dealt with him, Paul always acted in a polite and professional manner, and did what needed to be done.

I know that the lack of control over trolls was and still is a major issue with mods and reading between the lines, you can see that anyone, not just mods, would have a major issue with the effort required to moderate whilst being hampered.
If you want mods to do their jobs, then you cant really expect them not to question some of the policies that are chucked out from server central...

How many mods do we have? How many of them can ban users? I can only speak from past knowledge but it's only one or two of them, and then Shaun/Simon.
I really do think that if all of them could ban users then we'd not have so many trolls around, maybe even the threat of mods being able to temporarily or permanently ban a user from posting might be enough to stop things?
For some time, in the early days, I did want to be a mod, but having chatted with a few mods and ex-mods over the years, I'd not want to. Ignoring the thankless and time consuming nature of it (ok, so that's ironic seeing how much time I've spent on here over the past few years ) I'd resent not being able to speak my mind on threads, and also I'd want to be able to be completely ruthless when it comes to dealing with trolls and other distruptive situations that arise from time to time.
I think the other reason is that I can be a team player, providing one can show their own initiative from time to time, and not have orders barked at them by the boss, and expected to follow along like a mindless puppy, even if you disagree with the orders.

why can't mods ban users? i moderate on several forums and i have the "power" to delete/ban users as required. i can also edit/delete posts/topics as required.
on one forum because of the stringent policy of thoroughly vetting all new members we have yet to ban anyone. this is an extremely lively forum
