according to the witnesses
Bikes always appear to be going faster due to their smaller size. Witnesses are very poor at accurately determining a bike's speed.

a) My mum won't let me have one!
b) Leathers, no thanks, I don't want to arrive at a date's house only to have her think that I might prefer to take her brother out instead!

Why the hell do you lot bother with 4 wheels ok, yeah they are quick but when it comes to outright fun they aren't even in the same postcode as a bike.....and if i am utterly honest can't see any car getting me around as quick as a bike....like say to the coast and back (bout 120 miles).

Come on be honest your all bikers deep down, just a bit scared of alllll that power now aren't ya
I know what you mean, but to be honest, I know that if I rode a bike, I would now be DEAD.Thats the long and short of it, I would want to ride a bike near its limit, and WHEN I fell off, it would not be pretty.90% of riders never come anywhere near a bikes cornering limits because its so risky (straight line accelleration gets booring),I have often found myself held up by performance bikers near devils bridge because they can't use the cornering performance of their bikes. As to fun, its not about outright speed.

I don't think its a case of getting near the limit of the performance, car or bike, its the limit of the persons ability (theres always someone faster), theres only a few peeps out there that can push performance vehicles to the limit on the road and they are proffessionals....and yeah the concicquences on bikes is far far greater than a car to be fair.

Suppose the only way to do it would be the Isle of Man TT course as that has every kind of bend, environment to deal with or a race track....and i don't think i have heard of a car getting close to the Stock bike lap times (can't say i have looked into either though)

You HAVE to be committed to a bend on a bike otherwise it can go wrong (more rewarding though) , where as you do have a fighting chance in a car as it's easier to turn harder and you can brake mid bend if neccessary.

Not saying your not fast up there, just maybe understand that a fully committed rider doing those roads will harder to catch...

A fully committed nutter will prolly win..car or bike!

I have a VTR1000 along with a well sorted RB5.

I'd sell the VTR first anyday regardless of how much I like it.

Although it takes more skill to ride a bike fast 95% of bikers in my experience don't have that skill. The only thing that makes them faster point to point is the ease of overtaking and ability to use a partial racing line on a single lane.

I'm considerably faster down my favorite b-road in the car than on the bike. Maybe a very good rider on that bike that knew the road 'might' be able to keep up.

9 out of 10 times traffic dictates the bike is much quicker. I reckon I could take an hour or more off the journey from aberdeen to inverness on the bike.

Hmm, when the car drivers were doing 60 and the bikers were overtaking a long line of traffic = speeding, no question!

To be honest i dont know how to ride a bike and I wouldnt dare ride one either. However I give a lot of respect to those who do, especially on motorways in some of the conditions we have in the uk (wind gusts and down poors).

They might be stupid, crazy, insane or just have huge kahoonas, either way every time they jump on those 2wheeled rev machines they could be smashed by an old codger drifting on the roundabout or just someone who hasnt seen them coming up alongside. Driving is always a risk for everyone however we all know the differences in safety between cars (airbags, side impact bars etc etc) and bikes (nothing). I give props where due, and some of the speeds I have seen bikers hit on public roads let alone in the wet are nothing short of suicidle (were over taken by a bike on the Autobahn whilst doing 150mph in a tuscan s )

So my point....bikes are deff not everyone and for sure not for me, you have to be a certain type of nutter/adrenaline junkie to drive one, but for those that do, I give a lot of respect to.

p.s. this does not include *** heads who endanger the public with hazardous driving !

Isle of man tt...thats speed!

I understand what you are saying fella, but...

you kinda contradicted yourself unless you are that 5% who really know how to ride a bike!

I will always be quicker point to point on a bike mainly down to the simple fact that (generalising obviously) bikes easily out accelerates cars all the way to their given top speed, which is higher, thus the cornering benefits of cars generally not sufficient to catch the bike.i.e. blackpool to scarborough.

if i had to get down a very twisty road (no straights)as fast a possible then a car would almost definatley be quicker, but unless you only ever use very twisty roads, point to point a bike has to be quicker.

I had a choice to keep the GSXR750 or keep PTMW!

I kept PTMW! 'nuff said

I get more pleasure out of driving a car fast round a track than a bike

& I am an ex-London bike courier of 15 years.

Agree about all the RUBs & BABs driving around like tw@ts on latest superbikes and killing themselves - brings the rest of bikers into disrepute

who said the cars were doing 60mph???, can they prove it, if they were doing 55mph then a bike overtaking doing 60mph would not be speeding, what your saying is circumstancial at best, we need hard facts to end that debate.......and we don't ave em fella.

Brun: christ man calm down, she just had big hooters, i'll show you soon enough

Morpheus: are there any car races on the IOM?, suppose that would lay the bike v car debate to rest.

Not really, I'm not in that 5%, not even close. I'm average, which is kind of the point. I think a lot of people of my skill level don't realise that they're not the fastest thing on the road. I know it as I know i'm faster in the car.

I think a lot of bikers learn this on the nurburgring when they get passed by car after car. Again there is that few, 5% or so that will be lapping sub 8mins but i've kept up with and passed bikers scraping the pegs and think I could about do a 9 min lap.

Does that make sense?

It does make sense fella (i am not been argumentative here) but ..

A. your perception of whats fast on a bike is always gunna be different to the next fella, so as much as your opinion is perfectly valid it's only yours.

B. Nurburg, if you are catching bikers scraping pegs they simply are taking wrong lines or not hanging off enough. TT riders don't scrape pegs on STD bikes..nuff said.

Disclaimer: if i do nurburg it'll not be flat out been chased but mad hairy porsche driving germans......just for the experience.

You obviously enjoy fast cars more than bikes hence MAYBE have a bias towards them (vise versa for me obviously) therefore more inclined to push your car harder than the bike, if you could say honestly you are as competant and committed on a bike then as you are in a car then tbh we are never gunna agree, but i have enjoyed the banter and you have made some points i do actaully agree with aswell.

Good to hear

And yup you're right in your assumption, I get more out of driving than riding and am more committed and consistant behind the wheel.

Can't wait to get out for a blast on the bike this weekend though

Lets be serious here....a long line of cars doing the speed limit down a B road. A series of bikers "fly past" overtaking a line of them = speeding no matter how you try to dress it up! It makes no odds to me....if you kill yourself then that makes my job a whole lot easier. I'll leave you at the side of the road for the police and undertakers to deal with
