I think the impreza was an icon of the 90's in a similar way to the supercars of the 80's, though not comparable in any other sense.

It shaped a generation really, forced the supercar makers to really step up a notch to make their cars worth it and had a generation of kids lusting after one. The gran tourismo crowd too, along with the skyline.

I remember being in school in the early 90's thinking I wanted one of those as they were so fast and such a sleeper. Then later in the mid 90's the impreza was THE car to aspire to in school.

That qualifies it as an icon to me. May not be the fastest/best/most expensive/rarest thing on the planet but an amazing car none the less. It's just a shame so many fell into the hands of snobs that feel the need to belittle there own car at every oportunity (imo they far outnumber the 'chav' contigent)

agree with all the above (except I left school in '88), scoob owners occupying the middle ground i.e. those that believe their car is fast and will surprise super car marques but it will not beat bikes...seem to be in the minority. shame really.

Quick question to these people who doubt an Impreza can keep up/beat a Ferrari.....have you ever been in a tuned Scooby, or a Ferrari????

A friend of mine went for a spin in his girlfriends blokes 355, and was very unimpressed.

All you need to do is look at the Top Gear lap times, a 320 bhp Evo (ie roughly the same as a played with Impreza) is quicker than a Lamborghini.

one of my very good friends has a 355 F1 GTS, sounds bl00dy lovely, looks great, pulls birds etc etc.

my 300bhpish estate car is quicker up to about 100\110.

super cars are super for lots of reasons but they are not necessarily super fast when compared to a mildly modded rally rep

Finally.....some sense

As you know (or maybe you don't) I don't think my car is the best out there....i've been suprised by enough out there (nissan gtir's to be exact) not to go down that road!

It just amused/s me when you see these people with there £100k plus cars getting caught by something that costs 10% or that.......
Your telling me that wouldn't put a smirk on your face?

BTW Moley, thanks for the quote and help........

Think Ford beat them to it. The Sierra, and Escort Cosworth's were the first car's to bring Supercar matching performance to the people. Subaru and Mitsubishi just copied them, then beat them when Ford declared there was no market for a 4wd 300bhp saloon

Yes Audi were there first with the Quattro, but they were over priced. Ford Cosworths were quicker and cheaper.

I think 1/4 mile terminal speeds and 60-100 times are a good indication of how fast something accelerates in the real world.

I think a F355, being 380bhp had a terminal of just over 110mph and 60-100 of just under 5 secs. You'd have to be pushing on toward 400bhp to match this sort of figures in an impreza, but out on the road 1/2 second here or there isn't really noticable.

Agree that they're supercars for a number of different reasons not out and out performance.

Not mine.. smoke all 4 wheels (not doing that at the lights!), ride the clutch or bog down to nothing.

Oh for the want of a TD04 again

from a standing start the estate is quicker, only a couple of car lengths but once into three figures quickly shows its pedigree

i'll let you know the results post TD05 and fmic install

I was mad for Cosworth's when I was young. Always wanted my dad to get a Whaletail one. He never though, B@stard. Got a XR4x4 instead.
Imagine my excitement though when one day he came home from work, and asked me to get something out of the boot for him. I walked outside to see a gleaming brand new Black Sierra Saphire Cosworth 4x4. I nearly spunked on the spot !!

Was the best kept clean car he ever had. Better still, I learnt to drive in it

i was a lucky bu66er my dad worked for Ford and used to get company lease cars so we had a few good cars over the years...best car he ever brought home was a grey R32 that they were using to benchmark the RS500's against...it was 1990 and nobody knew what the hell it was

Has to be an RS500 in white for me thx. A guy once came to our house to buy my mums car as a 2nd car with one. First one I ever saw in real life, remember thinking it was just amazing at the time. Despite the guy up the road having a 911 convertable

I had to learn to drive in a 1 litre Nova!!

Over the last few days I have been out and about in my impreza taking the kids out during the holidays, I have witnessed some driving that was really "life threatening" for want of a better thrase, All targeted at me in my 2003 STI, I've had fat women with their kids in people carriers, mondeo drivers, audi drivers even pickup trucks, overtaking me in 30 limits(In some cases with people and children at great danger!), White vans forcing me onto the verge as they overtake into oncoming traffic, and Trucks on the A14 pulling out on you forcing you to brake or go into the centre reservation......

I drive alot getting to work and at work(never in my impreza)and these things although they happen somtimes it would take me 12 months to equal what happens in 3-4 days driving my STI, It tells me 3 things, 1, the impreza(and i guess EVO) have a bad name with other drivers, 2 There are way too many tawts out there who need to prove a point , 3 There is nowhere near enough police out there catching these tawts!( But plenty speed cameras on straight roads with no visable hazzards)

I have 2 questions....

1 Do i sell the scoob? Do away with the hassle?

2 Drive like them knowing the chances of being caught are very slim?

I think next time i'm out in the scoob on my own some people might have a shock...............................
