I think you may be right about the sustained high mph (revs), but i would think Subaru would have that sorted.
I would imagine the oil-fed tesioner being suspect.

Don't think the gearing is that low on a P1, in 5th in my uk classic 6000rpm is 150mph indicated, in 4th 7000 is about 125. So at 100 in 5th the revs are quite reasonable (don't remember off hand). wouldn't fancy sitting at 100 with an Ra box though
