If Irish people had to fly anywhere during the 70's and 80's, they were practically strip searched. There was a different security gate in Heathrow for the Irish. I remember travelling on a packed tube in London in 1988 with another couple of lads. We had the entire carriage to ourselves. Everyone heard the accents and crammed in somewhere else. This was pretty much standard on public transport. I didn't for 1 minute ever consider that the people who moved hated me. They hated the thought that I might be carrying a bomb that would kill and maim then, but I think that was a reasonable suspicion given that the only people who were letting off bombs and killing and maiming people tended to be Irish.
Once the Irish stopped bombing people a level of trust returned and now I have to pack into the tube with the rest of the sardines.
I think the same applies now - people would not be continually suspicious of Aisians travelling on public transport unless they had good reason to be suspicious. Events over the past 5 years have given them good reason to be suspicious. The only way to erase that suspicion is stop trying to kill people. While some incidents can be attributed to British propaganda, you can't argue that 7/7 didn't go some way to making the entire nation nervous?

Forgot about all that carry on! I remember (as a school kid) turning up at Heathrow to go to Belfast with a load of used blank 7.62mm cartridge cases that I'd picked up at some military tattoo - that caused a right stink LOL & I got it in the ear big-time from my mum

Whilst this incident is unfortunate, it is perfectly understandable, and certainly not racist in any shape or form.
Unfortunately, most of the suicide bombers/terrorists at present are Asian males, usually between 18-35 or thereabouts.
If most of the terrorists were blonde, blue eyed men of the same age who spoke French, Im sure a similar situation would arise.
It's just paranoia, not racism.
I bet you're the person who complained to OFCOM as well about Tom smoking too
Geezer

I think it is great that these passengers made a stand. Perhaps if muslims are inconvenienced by the actions of their "brothers" they may start to get as fed up with this situation as the rest of us and may even start to condemn their actions.

I was on a flight back from NY 5 years ago and there were a couple of asian chaps sitting a good 5 metres apart in the gate lounge, and I noticed them looking at each other occasionally, and they appeared sweaty. I panicked, spoke to security, who then checked their details etc.
Of course they were fine and nothing happened but:
a) I felt sad that I had been conditioned by the media into believing that a couple of asian guys were a significant threat, given the number of flights that occur, the chances in relaity etc..
b) i was overwhelmed with guilt that these chaps should be under more scrutiny just because others of the same colour (and the are a few billion like them!) have blown up planes.
I hope the people on the recent flight dont just think 'phew, that was close, I am glad I did that', but rather that it is sad that they thought they had to and maybe next time they wont.

remember it wasnt us or those passengers that wanted to feel paranoid, its the fecking islamic bombers that have done that, along with a good helping of the media.
dont blame yourself or those passengers, its them that are to blame

Better safe than sorry.
If you see a sweaty muslim/pasty faced jonny foreigner waiting to get on a plane - shoot first ask questions later.
I believe this is the current Metropoltan Police Policy

In both scenarios I think its better to be realistic of the real odds of something going wrong and act accordingly, not to let the media drive you into a paranoid response.

From a source no doubt beloved to many of scoobynet's knuckledragger population.
This type of cr@p is the result of the ignorant, racist attitude of one stupid old bitch and some scummy 'charter flight types'. An attitude many of you seem to share. Personally I think they should have made the other passengers pay compensation for the trouble they caused. If I was the lads in question I'd be suing not laughing.

Rabid, why do I get the impression that you flipped a coin in the air and chose Heads, not racist, could have equally been tails, racist but you couldnt choose and then set out on a contrived and deliberate troll-fest ?

Wrong. Other obvious darkies such as hindus and sikhs would racial discrimination too, but seem to have done rather better. Try again.

Guy on the Jeremy Vine show yesterday was a passenger on the flight they eventually got on - absolutely convinced these lads were stirring it up, trying to give some sort of impression they were 'dangerous' and trying to spook the other pax.
Sounds to me like a couple of very immature idiots who thought it would be a laugh and really don't appreciate the seriousness of what's going on these days. Yes, they should have been kicked off (1) for being dick heads, and (2) for acting in very poor taste.
And if the muslim community are upset they're all now being treated with suspicion, then they too should be bollocking these two idiots - they've just added to it.

I am fairly ignorant on the subject but how do employers deal with the praying at certain times of the day? May have something to do with the high figures? IMHO
Anyway I for one am glad not to be in the UK at the moment with the media making everyone terrified of opening their own front door.

The racism is at institutional levels as well. Any more nice pretty graphs you can dredge up to prove my point for me?
