The term Engineer is now used too easily IMO, you now get people who have done a four week tech course calling themselves electrical engineers.
Chartered Engineer and registration with the institute takes about six years and an engineering degree.

These reports are a bit generalised!
I am a Design Director for a 200 people Company, part of a very large listed engineering group.
That makes me a No1 and about 60K, not 171! and I do 47 ish hours/week
I get the car/petrol and Medical all taxed, so maybe those are in the figures?
Engineers in the west midlands (I mean real ones Pete) are 33K @ 37 hours.
Real reports give the assessment criteria with notes so you can analize the findings on a level pitch.
No director here earns over 80K.
As for living on the average wage of 28K?
I know about 75% of people here certainly do on a lot less!

These charts are far too vague. A director of a limited company of 5 employees may earn 30k but they are still a director. A director of a blue chip may earn 5m.

There really are loads of people on Scoobynet claiming some pretty high incomes. Why aren't you on 911.net or something?! Do you all p*ss it up against a wall. I earn just under the current UK average (according to this thread) and have a mortgage, reasonable car and a reasonable lifestyle. What the hell do you lot do with your cash?

If you're in London then 28K is a pittance, cost of living is so much higher here. Mate of mine moved to Manchester and lives like a king on a wage that he'd find hard to survive on in London.

it depends where you live in london. If you commute it can be done easily, as the non english speaking immigrants have proven.

Looking at the lists though, it's s*d all money, given that I'm responsible for assessing the qulity of care for 4000+ people, at a cost of over £9 million.
Plus as Gordon Tosspot Brown had declared the public sector won't get pay rises above inflation, to mop up the mess he's made, I'll can't actually earn any more than I do now. Imagine if they said that to the private sector!
Think I'll train as a plumbed...

The cost of living / average earnings ratio is now worse in several places outside London, eg York. It's therefore more difficult to buy a house on an average wage oooop North

I earn well over 6 figs and have done for years (admit i have a large family) yet we have one car, a Ford Galaxy! I could buy a 911 but why if i dont need it?
Its no different to assuming anyone on £28k must live in a box!

Car ownership def has no relaiton to earnings imo. Ok, you get a few enthusiasts with money who have expensive cars but the majority of people i know with a lot of disposable income drive Focus's, Mondeo's etc or maybe company/leased Mercs/BMs/Audis.
I find the people with expensive cars are mostly on average earnings and have them on finance.

I also know several people who own £1 million + properties who don't have a car or even know how to drive, we're talking abour large chunks of the population of Mayfair, Fulham and Chelsea here.
Judging people by their cars is so misguided it's not funny.

well i'm a design engineer, with a degree, in the Northwest and i'm on £29,400, with overtime it came to £37k last tax year, anyone want to give me a job for £35k+? i've got 5 years as Automotive Engineer for a major manufacturer in Chassis design and testing
my Mrs who also has a degree with 4 years experience in direct marketing is on £18k
i think a pinch of salt with the findings is required

Im not even on the list. I earn about the national average pay and live in a nice cheap part of the country. All counts for **** as far as Im concerned. On person gets paid x the other doing the same job gets paid y. Only London gets any sort of coverage when it comes to stuff like this, the rest of England is neither here nor there.
