Training Consultant ,Director of my own ltd company and IT Technical. no way i earn the figures stated in this. I am comfortable but could alway do with earning a bit more

True - when you look at the cost of living, My GF lives in Brighton and it is feckin' horrendus down there.
The saving grace is i live in a nice 3 bed semi - driveway for 4 cars bought in a nice area 8 years ago for 49k

I am an Engineer with a degree in Electronics and on my way to becoming chartered - I dont even earn the average UK salary - I thought it was actaully more like £22,000 - Not £28,000. I need to get my finger out and actually get my chartership - I spend too much time doing up houses though.

I know several millionaires that don't really 'show' their wealth. My original point stands though that Scoobynet seems pretty affluent with many members boasting incomes far in excess of the average.

The term Engineer is now used too easily IMO, you now get people who have done a four week tech course calling themselves electrical engineers.
Chartered Engineer and registration with the institute takes about six years and an engineering degree.

When I took my first job as a student, I had a training manager who was very keen that I log all my work experience and submit it to the IEE with a view to becoming a CEng. I've now been in the industry 9 years, had several jobs and a dozen interviews, and he's the ONLY person who has shown even the slightest interest in whether or not I'm an IEE member.
Needless to say, I'm not. I have a good degree and excellent experience as a design engineer - and if any prospective employer were really interested in whether I'd been through the IEE's bureaucracy as well, it would set alarm bells ringing.
Maybe it's also relevant to point out that the only CEng I know is a mature gentleman working as an apps engineer - and that the company I was working for who wanted me to become a CEng myself has now been taken over and the site closed down and moved abroad.
There's definitely something not quite right about how they've classified engineers anyway - how come, for example, there's one category 'Engineers (electrical/electronics)' @ £24,890, and another for 'Engineers (electronics)' @ £38,141. Is dealing with the odd electrical machine really that bad for the wallet? Or has one figure been diluted by washing machine repairmen calling themselves engineers?
(Ironically it's just this sort of rant, over and over again about the status of engineers, that I found used to fill the IEE newspaper).
Where was the entry in the survey for 'Technician' anyway? Is it a rude word or something? Nurses get their own category, they don't have to call themselves doctors.

Financial plan is to be debt free including mortgage by 45 (37 now). We get a break away at least once a month and that will increase once the mortgage is paid.
I've already done the big/fast car thing. I enjoy driving and I'm still an enthusiast who loves motorsport, but I'm not wasting any more money on fuel and insurance when modern TDi' are good to drive and just as quick in 99% of on road conditions.

As a political comment:

I am glad I retire in 6 years time as the profession I have loved for so long, new product design, is doomed at grass roots level. This is a company that designs,makes and markets it's own ideas, the proper way to engineer!
Getting very rare now.
Mind you, a bloody fortune to be made in China!
