my scooby made 400bhp at abby motor sport

On the 20th July he posted:
"my sti was on the rollers to day at triton motorsport and it made 292.5 bhp at the fly wheel and 228 bhp at the wheels .. it has had a hks induction kit , full magnex exhaust including taking both cats out and a bailey dump valve .. is this good? I also fitted my new headers today, they day it's about 25 bhp gain .. road tested it, goes like a ****. What a nightmare fitting them though"
hmmm - something smells here......
it'd be **** juice spraying all over his posts. He'll be on the news for blowing something up next

i questioned them today at abbey becuase obviously there has been a lot of interest in my car's performance ie you all think i am full of ****! i can tell you all day long how a normal asperated engine works but this is my first turbo car. I am only telling you what I have been told myself. The graph readings are 297.8 at the hubs...which they said from the flywheel to the hubs it loses round about 30% bhp which this would make it 387.8 bhp at the flywheel. I do have the graphs to prove this but if you guys then still doubt then give abbey motorsport a ring and ask them what the subaru sti made on the dyno and what mods it had. That's if you are really bothered. I have no reason to bull****. I also spoke to john at Triton motorsport in Bournemouth and have booked it in for him to put it on his rollers. Abbey motorsport said to me today that I had no reason to disbelieve them. It is what it is and said these forums are full of computer people that have got not nothing better to do. Dan, the guy who mapped my car is one of the best in the country and has full proof to back himself up. This is the last I am saying on the subject as when I owned my type-R you had non of this disbelief

Oh yeah Dan.. heard of him he's meant to be the dogs bollox... or is that just bollox instead!! No offence but if this mapper is one of the best in the country.. you would expect it to be well known on here.
If your car did make that then fair play to you but you should put a full spec up of your car.

I'm sure Abbey themselves have said you get less transmission losses at the hubs than at the wheels. Those figures give 24% ish losses at the hubs. (I'd accept that for the wheels) so what losses does a Scooby have at the wheels?

So you have around 300bhp at the hubs.
I ran my car today on a rolling dyno. The losses which will include tyre deformation and heating were 27%,
Assume that conservatively the tyre losses are half of the total loss (Subaru has high losses as a 4 wheel drive but it is quite an efficient 4 wheel drive) then you can assume say 13% (pretty close to Andy F's estimate of 10%.
This gives you a flywheel power of around 335bhp. Which is just about feasible. A long way short of 400bhp.
If Abbey are using a general factor for losses then they may have simply made a poor assumption about the Subaru drivetrain losses.
I am sure that with around 300 at the hubs it will be very fast on the road.

I thought a standard internal engine could only cope with 350ish bhp.
So you must have an uprated engine or steel internals to cope with the power?
Have you had all the work done yourself? I'm assuming not as your not sure what turbo / engine the car has?
I think people are just looking for some facts about the engine & turbo rather than having a go at you mate?!

Engines fine mate.
Its the turbo thats confusing everyone. VF35 restricted me at 350bhp so needed to upgrade. When you're shelling out for a new one you have a decent idea of what's been purchased and fitted. Likewise whenever I've taken mine on any rollers I've always had to declare a full mod sheet. For him to not know what turbo he has and then to quote the engine number gets people thinking he's full of the proverbial.
stiprodrive. Good luck to you mate. Whatever you have you're happy and thats the main thing. What have you told your insurance company incidenatally?

Hello thought id put my two penneth worth in, Dont think its fair that abbey have beeen dragged into this without been able to back themselves up just because of something a member has put on here, just because you havent herd of someone ie dan dosn't mean they dont know their stuff especialy when it comes to skylines if you check out their site they have some acheivments to back themselves up Im new to scoobys and through reading this thread ive learnt rob and andy are well respected when it comes to scoobies (hello by the way dare say ill be after your advice soon) it seems to me its the member thats misleading and not giving the full facts so give abbey a break and do your homework before you start judgeing them you never know they might be up on scoobys aswell and you might need to call on them,

I don't think anyone is questioning Abbey in regard to Skylines. They have MASSIVE reputation for creating very powerful, strong Skylines - albeit at a cost.
The simple fact is that for them to state that 300bhp at the hubs for a Scoob to equate to 387 at the flywheel is a poor assumption. On a rolling road that assumption may be correct, but hub dynos as it has already been stated have significantly smaller losses.
They are not as experienced with Scoobs. 300bhp at the hubs is an excellent figure for the assumed mods - and will be very fast on the road.

so lets note question other mappers if you dont know them and get back to the true spec of this car thats got the 400 bhp????????

I have used pretty much every major rolling road type installed in the UK now, with the exception of the bosch rollers similar to those at prosport.
I can guarantee you that you have not got over 380hp at the flywheel with 298hp at the hubs. I recently mapped an STI3 that has since been on the dynapack at Abbey. It made around 290hp at the hubs I think, and I would put that car at around 330hp at the flywheel based on fuel flow, airflow and ignition advance.
If you put your car with 298hp at the hubs on a conventional rolling road style dyno, expect to get around 260-270hp at the "wheels" by the time the additional losses introduced by the tyres have made themselves known.
It's all very well stating transmission losses, but until you get some sort of real figure for flywheel HP (like engine dyno or even Dastek rolling road at a push) it's very difficult to say. I would always go with the lowest figure, otherwise you will find it difficult to make improvements!
