Pete - so for the same price would you use Corradoboys Fuchs Ester based oil or comma oil ?
Dave - like the McDonald's analogy, but Corsa's are cool, especially my neighbours red 1.2 with flared wheel arches and oversized alloys !!

Surely the recommended is just that, a bare minimum requirement. If there is something new out there that is BETTER than the previous version by virtue of its superior quality then use it.
But does it really matter getting down to individual brands and slagging each other off like all this just because someone disagrees with you? As an engineer of some 30 years now I have seen things improve out of all recognition due to new research and technology. Some things have gone wrong but generally speaking what was good in 1995 could well be bettered by a 2006 oil. Only recently having bought a 2006 Scooby I do not know what the book says yet (only done 800 miles so not due a looking at just yet) but I bet it is not exactly the same as the 1996 model, but does that mean that a 1996 model should not use an improved oil as recommended in a newer model. And yes I do know there are differences in the engines etc, but the newer engines aer probably just as hard working as the old ones etc etc.
Anyway, hi guys interesting thread ----- in places, not so good in others.

It used to be 10w-40. Now it's 5w-30 on the new cars, same goes for the APi ratings. You try telling a classic owner to put that in his sump, he'll cry blue murder at you

Current oil tables (as of 2006) still suggest to use 10w-40 in early cars (pre2000) and 5w-30 in post 2000 uk cars

Great thread.
I'm glad that Pete is the Oil Guru here and that I'm just a lowly salesman who just gives advice based on profit alone apparantly.
It's funny that I don't recommend semi-synthetic even though my profit margin is in fact higher because it costs me peanuts to buy. The ingredients are dirt cheap and so is the final product!
Oh by the way, thanks for the personal insults, I suppose it's the only way to get your argument across whilst attempting to look clever.
You do what you want Pete, as I know you will but be careful that you don't give people the wrong advice, not everyone has your car and your advice would be completely wrong for many owners here, their handbooks would confirm this and so would their tuner in the case of modded cars.
If anyone wants specialist advice, you know where I am. Feel free to ask and make your own mind up, it's your car and your money.
3000 mile oil changes LOL! If you're towing a caravan 1000 miles would be more appropriate!!
Cheers
Simon

I'm sorry for bringing a dead thread back to life but this is the funniest thing I've read in a while!!!
I was planning on doing an oil change soon and was wandering which oil to use so like all newbies should, I used the search option and got my answer. I will be using Silkolene Pro-S for a couple of good reasons:
1. My 300ZX ran quieter (tappets) on silkolene than on any of the other 3 fully sinthetic oils I tred.
2. All manufacturers have a recomended lubricant for their vehicle when it leaves the factory but the recomendation is based on whats available at the time. Technology moves on and newer improved products come to light. One example of this was the recomended transmission oil for my 94 Mustang. Ford themselves issued a dealer notice to switch to a fully synthetic tanny oil around 2001 as they found it would prolong the AT piston seals.
Thanks
Dave
