And The Winner is SONY!

Wot a load of twoddle
As a Mac user for the last 14 years, I've been WAITING for the kind of technology that's now available, where the hardware will run both MS & OSX apps in most cases together.
As have most other Mac users.
From my job perspective, if any of the developers could write a package that does what my Mac pakage does as well, then that would help. But I'm sorry, in my personal experience, where reliablilty is required, there are still issues with the PCs. Not Microsoft, but the 3rd party developers at fault here.
With reference to the XBox/PS arguement, personally, I bought the 360 because it was the best available at the time (with exception of my PC)...
IF (that's going to be a BIG "If") the PS3 is going to be as good as the 360, then I will look at it.
But what winds me up is the Sony attitude that people will buy it and pay the high price because they want a PS3. Nothing to do with whether or not it's any good.
This arrogance will make many people think twice about a PS3........
Dan (and yes, even though I own an Ipod, I will be looking at the Microsoft version with great interest!)

You must have not spent any time on american forums. Those xbox fanboys....Im not even gonna retype some of the crap they come out with. Both sides have ill informed people, and to say that only PS2 owners are is incorrect.

I still think Sony have dropped the ball big time on this one, though.
You still haven't answered the question audi......What will the ps3 bring that is different from the ps2 apart from better graphics?
At least ms has all the good games signed up. Just wish they would release them rather than holding off until sony launch the ps3.
On a few of the latest titles the 360 has been capped to provide a sustained 30fps. This is to maintain guaranteed smooth gameplay whilst maintaining a high quality of textures. Don't forget this is in high def so it is 30fps progressive which is twice the frame rate of the ps2 and xbox which were interlaced.
Even sony arent even claiming 60fps on all their titles and this has been shown with some pre released demos at shows.
The only things sony had going for it was exclusive titles but they can't even claim that now.

This proves that the wheels revolve and the balance continually moves.. each miniscule movement being shouted as a major breakthrough by fans and industry alike....
I agree that the informed buyer chooses the better product.. but then there's always the question,... better for who?

So what you are saying is the ps3 is better because it does things better and has loads of new features, but you don't know what they are because you haven't found out?
So you are just a sony fan boy who hasn't looked at the facts then?
That's ok then. We must all assume that it will be vastly superior to anything else out there because it has a ps logo on it. Never mind that it doesn't bring anything new to the market or doesn't have as many features as the 360.
If sony magically insert some more/better features into the ps3 to make it better than a 360 then I will consider it when it is released but at the moment it is severely lacking when compared to what the 360 can do.

No I knew the facts but I have long since forgeton them since im NOT a fanboy who will go on to remeber every single little detail about the machine.
All I know is this. Like with cars, americans make **** games on the whole compared to the japanese, and seeing as the japanese will all be going with sony, the ps3 will have better games. Simple as.
BTW how is the PS3 lacking to what a 360 can do. My 360 can do anything special or new, what has yours got that mine hasnt?

FWIW, it's not so much fence sitting, but a necessity to embrace (in this case) both platforms. (My background is in media/audio - hence my justification for Mac)

Alan - we must have a chat sometime. Interesting theory on MS. The vast majority of app tests we do are on MS products - we find plenty of problems, to keep us in business Although in fairness, MS has improved considerably in recent years (still doesn't stop developers writing stuff, with no thought for security though!!).
The world is full of good ideas that no one uses - Betamax lost out to VHS, Apple to MS, Token Ring to Ethernet - the list goes on Who knows what will happen with PS3 and the 360?

Not so, as the two go hand in hand. Macs are the Industry standard in Media, but there is a user-base using PC. However, the PC platform isn't as "pro" (reliability mainly - nothing to do with how nice the OS looks, although this is always nice )
I use Macs because I want to. If the PC could do the same thing then I would probably look at one.
I'm not going to get drawn into an arguement about mac vs pc, as the two are equally viable in their sectors.
But your comments about Mac users hailing their platform as the be all and end all is ill-informed. This would be the same as PC users saying that their platform is the best. Same as PS2. Same as Xbox.
So yes, this is the un-winnable arguement. From all sides. Therefore no point in discussing it

Sony have dropped the ball with the PS3 in Europe and the US, but expect it to kick *** in Japan, where they just don't like Microsoft!

Chris.. My 'mainly locked down' quote refers to their hold on the majority of finance sector apps that I am aware of. The comment was VERY simplistic as there was no way I could go into the complex dynamics of the infrastructure we use from web front end to back end file storage, databases, mainframe, diallers etc etc...and all the security with Firewalls, HIDS, NIDS, Routers switches, DMZ's etc etc over a global intranet...
The amount of work that crosses my desk to secue this environment is... quite frankly... a massive task. Don't even get me started on wireless... The majority of that task is taken up with Microsoft and I have separate calls and workload to cover this specifically..so no, I don' think they have it locked down... but I do
You must PM me your business..

Audi.
When the ps3 is released and if it is capable of running a useable version of linux, what will that bring to the gaming and home entertainment market?
I serious doubt it will run a full function linux without being hacked and there is no way it will run xp.
Mentioning hacking a ps3 to run other operating systems is like comparing a modded car with an unmodded car. We are talking standard out of the box systems here.
Even if you COULD make it do this what does that achieve? Great you have a slow non upgradeable pc.
Bear in mind that the original xbox was capable of running linux and working as a fully functioning pc about 4 years ago.
The 360 works as a media center extender which the ps3 can't do.
I regularly watch films, tv shows and use it as a pvr whilst watching something else streamed from the pc. The ps3 is not capable of doing this.
Yes I know you need a media center pc to do this but at the end of the year vista is launched and the media center capabilities are built into that.
You keep banging on about jap games but what do sony have now that microsoft don't? Most of the best games on the previous consoles were released by none jap companies. Apart from the gran turismo, metal gear solid or tekken series (which are old news and have been surpassed by much better games on other systems) what do sony have?
If the ps3 is more capable than the 360 gaming wise and works as a better media center then I will probably switch to sony, but lets face it what can the ps3 do that the 360 can't?
If you want to buy a console that is more expensive and less capable for 3 games then be my guest, after all it is down to personal preference, but the smart choice this time around has got to be the 360.
Hardly check or mate is it?

I have to be wary of making comments on public forums as I'm under NDA with basically every developer and publisher in the world.
However one thing I will say is that the market today (thanks almost entirely to Sony) is not about you and I, talking on this thread. It's about the mass market consumer. The hardcore, the brand loyalists and the rich early adopter will decided the first 10m installed userbase, but (and consider Sony now have over 100m PS2's in homes and rising) 40, 50, 100m is decided by global, mainstream, massmarket consumers.
These people don't even know what an Xbox 360 is.
MS should be commended on many fronts, not least the look and feel of the console and controllers, Xbox Live (and Arcade and Marketplace), and their attitude to developers and publishers, but never, repeat, never underestimate the power of Sony or the Playstation brand.

Ed I don't underestimate the brand, this was more of a discussion of comparing console to console as far as it is possible at the moment. The true test will be when they finally release it and it hits the market, although there are apparently going to be problems due to chip shortages.
I have no doubt that sony will sell lots of them but that doesn't mean it is a better or more capable console. It just means that people will blindly follow marketing/brandnames even when they are past their best.

But it depends on what you define as 'better'.
There isn't the info in the public market yet to compare.
No 'real' game demos. No PS3 network platform. No final controllers.
Having seen and played a few of the key titles, and from talking with people who are coding for the thing, yes it's nowhere near as straightforward as 360, but for those who are happy to write to the metal and not have to rely on Renderware or Unreal engine, their opinion is that there will be a discernable difference between the best PS3 titles and the best Xbox 360 titles. These are not Sony employees, they are platform agnostic game coders.
Ultimately it doesn't matter much to me as the competition will only be positive to gamers and the overall growth of the industry. One hot rumour amongst the execs at the show in Leipzig last week though was that PS3 may not see a US and Europe launch until Q1 next year, with only Japan seeing it pre-xmas...that scenario would definitely play into the hands of MS in the short term.

When I learnt that the PS3 controller would have no rumble feedback, that pretty much sealed it for me. I don't think people realise how much this actually brings to a game. Imagine playing a driving game and not knowing where the rumble strips are, or a FPS and not instinctively knowing you're being hit. To me, that's a big deal and a massive step back.

It's really odd how a 77 year old would be interested in all this gaming technology, oh no, it's not odd, it's just b*ll****.
If you're going to pretend to be someone you're not, at least don't keep tripping yourself up all the time.

I'm going to sit down and write on my Dell P4 2.26 GHz AT compatable PC with 512 MB DDR RAM a stiff letter that I'll print on my HP Laserjet on 2.6 Gm, recylcled 6"x4" paper.
This letter will be a detailed Project plan of my actions..

Mate the sony boss said that the PS3 will most likely come with linux pre installed on the machine! Nohacking involved whatsover. I know that you could run linux/xp on the xbox, but it required some modding.
Also the PS3 when launched is meant to be more powerful than any non commercially available PC.
I dont see how metal gear solid and gran turismo have been surpassed on other systems. (yes I have got Live for speed)
I disagree about the best games being relased by non jap companies? What type of games do you usually play?
Im not sure by what you mean as a media extender, but seeing as the PS3 can basically be used like a PC, has got blue ray and you can record TV n stuff on it Id say the PS3 is much better, and sony will be getting my hard earned dough after its been out for a couple months and most bugs are ironed out.
