The Thing

Apart from all (Yes I love them all) Aliens films, this is my favorite horror film.

I remember finding Hellraiser 2 pretty scary when it first came out.

Ooo, and Event Horizon deserves a mention. I really liked that too. Bit like Hellraiser in space IMO.

Gene/Pete - I'm guessing your an Alien fan. Have you seen the version of Alien 3 where the do actually capture it? Only ever saw it once because a lad at school had some family member working on it. They do capture it but Paul Mcgann (sp) lets it out.

And as an aside I've seen a picture but not actual footage of Aliens when Ripley finds Burke encased. She gives him a grenade and that is the big explosion whilst she has Newt in her arms. Supposed to be only on the Laserdisc version but I don't know for sure.

School took a poor 2nd to SciFi I'm afraid

The original Texas Chainsaw Massacre is my fav, so macabre.

Modern good ones are The Ring and 28 Days Later, the bit where the zombie jumped thru the window made the entire cinema jump........very funny

Being pedantic, though Alien is a great film and pretty scary, its sci-fi, not horror in my book, J4CKO's book of Horror films as separate and distinct from Sci Fi films today.

Childs play ?
Jacobs Ladder was abit freaky in places but otherwise dull.
House, anyone remember that, the big fat floating old lady monster.
The Imp, classic B movie with **** and the black lady from Star Trek in a career dead end.

Anyone seen an English film called "Link"?

Its about an ape that (IIRC) they experiment on to make more intelligent so he decides to be a psychopath. Not very good film but for some reason I remember it.

Leviathan
Deep Star 6

The Entity was supposed to be pretty scary if you were a single female living on your own - apparently

I lauged so hard at Deep Star 6 I nearly shat myself:

"Well, at least Snyder will get his name in the Guinness book of records. I mean, causing two nuclear explosions in one afternoon has to be some sort of record."

The Shining and the original Omen scared me silly when I was a kid (and much too young to have been allowed to watch them really.. the wonders of the VCR and beeing a latchkey kid!).

Also Salem's Lot (especially when the vampire's head pops up in the jail).

I loved the Hammer vampire ones.. all plunging necklines and heaving bosungas.. not scary but to a kid of a certain age

Does anyone remember a bizarre Italian (i think) film called "The Telephone Box"? I had nightmares about that one.. A man gets locked in a public phone box and eventually some scary midgets (might have imagined the midgets but they are scary aren't they? .. and clowns too.. midget clowns in a film would have me sh*tting bricks!) in a repair truck take him away. They dump him, still in the glass phone box, in a massive hangar filled with dead / rotting people in hundreds of other phone boxes.. Sounds crap but when you were 10...!!

Bad Taste:thumb What a film

I was 13 when I first saw Alien, it still gives me the heebie jeebies, I personally would class it as a horror film with a sci-fi setting

Hellraiser 2 & Return of the Living Dead are my other two standout scary ones

I never saw The Exorcist when it first came out, went to see it at the cinema when it was re-released the other year & p!ssed myself laughing it was that bad

The very first films i was terrified by was 'Xtro' and 'the deadly spawn' - both were XXX but i lived in the days when you could buy a **** mag at the age of 8 without any 'got any ID' questions.

Being a massiveJohn carpenter fan (his more modern films were absolute pants) his early films were masters of atmosphere/music/tension:

The Thing - undeniably the best horror film ever made
The fog - didnt see jamie lee curtis' **** but still very good
Halloween - michael myers killed his younger sister and you did see her ****
Prince of Darkness- alice cooper at his acting best

Being a big Zombie 'need more brains' fan:

Dawn of the dead (both)
Day of the Dead
Night of the living dead (both)
Return of the living dead Pt 1 and 2
Zombie flesh eaters

Others include:
The texas chainsaw massacre
Evil dead 1 2 3
Nightmare on elmstreet 1 2 3
Friday the 13th 1 2 3 4 5
Demons 1 and 2
Jeepers Creepers 1 and 2
Alien (sci-fi horror)
The hills have Eyes (new)
The omen 1 2 3

Anything that has not been tainted by the american corny dialogue crap that ruins the atmosphere gets a

Lord Shrek.....anyone who says the sixth sense was scary must think the kumars at no42 are funny

Hmm not a lot scared me as as yoof

mind you doing what i did for a living at that time made horror films seem like a walk in the park.

anyway in no particular order

Evil dead (jack of diamonds, king of hearts!!!!)
scanners (made my nipper jump the other day when the head went!!)
poltergeist (there here
An american werewolf in london
Dawn of the dead,
Day of the dead
The fly, jeff goldblum remake
The howling
funhouse, (about the only film that gave me the heebs)
my bloody valentine

then you had the old hammer classics
Plague of the zombies, shat me up as an 11 year old living in on old house!!
The devil rides out, made for a good book too
Quatermass and the pit
The reptile another friday night horror classic

the dracula ones were scary but soon became cheesy
Frankenstein I never found him scary just sad.

cant recall any really good ones recently though

I watched some film whe I was young, Wife and boyfriend kill her husband, but he's not dead, just deep sleep. They have funeral, Husband wakes up in coffin, claws way out, booby traps house with lots of mazes, kills boyfriend and welds wife in coffin with dead boyfriend and buries her alive.

Watched Texas Chainsaw Massacre at a mates house, had mexican subtitles , the tv kept changing channels by itself, Diane was asleep on one sofa, I was on the other, Big Tony was in bed upstairs, little Tony and Les were in the kitchen, freaked me out
