i think your post is right though .

i do like a nice car but cant be arsed with the hassle of owning one.
perhaps when the kids are older and dont knacker everything they touch we will get a nice 320i or as decent spec 407 or somat nice.

on a personal note jascko it would be amusing if you could get john stott or dominic to drop in and register as j4ckos mates mate!

This is exactly why I sold mine and bought an MR2 Roadster instead.

Driving is FUN again!.

What's more it actually feels like I'M THE DRIVER!.

Roof down on a twisty B road late at night, tunes on low enough to be heard but not loud enough to overpower the engine. I only need to do 40-60mph and it feels simply amazing!.

Surely that would be J4CKO's brother in-law and J4CKO's mate (The dozy one).

Having been almost universally condemned on other threads for suggesting Scoobies are not fun in the real world it is a total pleasure to meet some people with real insight and intelligence. I'm waiting for delivery of my commuter friendly Civic CDTI and in the meantime I am driving a 1998 Fiat Sciecento Sporting. Whizzed back from the driving range along the country back roads last night, maybe touching 60mph in the dark. Never above the speed limit and fantastic fun. That same trip in the STI was as boring as hell even when I engaged warp drive. Alas most people on this site are only interested in the bragging rights of owning a 4wd turbocharged rocket ship. They will continue to waste their money and miss out on the fun of driving something small and chuckable.

What an excellent thread.

Horses for courses Blueblaster there is still a time and place for the 4WD turbo, I live in rural Scotland and after recent trips to the South I can understand why the appeal of the scoob is limited in nose to tail traffic non stop. However the good days are worth a little involvement, winding roads
our usual weather(wet) and little will live with the scoob. Just because I dont agree with everyone it does not mean they are wrong( just not as right as me!!!)

To get any kind of driver involvment from the Subaru you literally have to be driving on a knifes edge at speeds well in excess of 100-130mph. One tiny slip up and your tomorrows news. Below the 'threshold of immediate danger' the Subaru gives no real driver satisfaction.

I know where you are coming from however some of my driving is done on the type of roads where the scoob is fantastic,2nd/3rd gear corners and the delivery of safe usable power to all 4 wheels can be great fun at low speeds as well. We also have an MX5 always fun at lower speeds and more involving than the scoob but in the right circumstances the scoob is hard to beat.( used to have an MR2 roadster but imho the MX5 is better). Either is fun on the right day but it rains loads here in Scotland and the scoob wins hands down.

I just think the Subaru is actually far too technically acomplished for it's own good and even on B roads in the wet your just going too darn fast for your own good. When I was out in it at speeds worth enjoying I was basically guilty of an act of total concious reckless endangerment.

A good example of the difference - I came up a long steep winding hill the other night in the MR2 Roadster - at the crest of the hill an enourmous Owl was sat in the middle of the road - I slowed and came to a near stop and it flew off - my wife who was sat in the passenger seat remarked - "If we'd have been in the Subaru you'd have obliterated that"...and she was right - it'd would have been a terrible explosion of flesh and feathers...and for what - 20 minutes of all out hi-speed madness???

Perhaps it's just an age thing - for me now 'the winning' as you put it, or being the fastest thing on the road is no longer my ultimate goal...

Yeah, why do we want to 'burn off' other drives, to prove what exactly, virility, a mate of mine described such activity as 'W4nking in public'.

And that is when you notice the Impreza's flaw...brakes LOL (especially old Classic models). You have to drive the thing so bloody fast to get any form of sensation of speed that you quickly find the area in which Subaru skimped on a few pennies when you need to stop. Obviously I'm talking about the cars that were not adorned with multi-pot Brembos. But you'd think that whilst Subaru were in the art of raiding Mitsubishi parts bin for brake calipers and turbos, they'd at least nick the decent brakes to suit their car's performance.

You make a lot of good points but who said anything about speed? my scoob with its brembos would maybe have stopped in front of the owl anyway?
As for the age thing I am 40 (and feel every year of it).I just feel that the handling/stopping/grip levels of the scoob are worthy attributes that have to be lauded in the right circumstances.

Agree totally but there is some satisfaction to be had out of leaving someone driving another car aggressively for dead. I hate tailgaiters and find it theraputic to either monster them on acceleration or cornering, especially when they are *really* trying.

Ditto high top speeds, high grip and loud exhausts. We end up buying stupid, expensive, more unreliable cars in the quest to go a little faster.

Not saying I still dont want all the above, I just dont know why ?

What is it that makes us go all uneccessary when we hear a Ferrari wailing or a rally car popping on the overrun, what would Freud say about it.

Jacko's Mate (TM) claims to have transcended this desire for fast cars but I think its cos he's got a Citroen Picasso, or is it why he bought a Citroen Picasso, its the old chicken and egg shaped thing debate.

There is more than this if you want to think about it,
Ever paid the high prices to get into a theme park, waited in a queue for about 2 hrs in blistering sunshine sweating you n**s off for 1 minute of sheer madness?
Any fisherman on here that will wait hours to catch the elusive fish?
Whats the feeling like when you catch it?
I ride a mountain bike fast downhill, over jumps, the feeling of getting some air over a 10ft plus jump is awesome, same as going as fast as you can possibly go down some gnarly descent.

The point i am making is, this is why you live. Not to wonder why and how different things give you a buzz.

I'm sure freud had some piece of madness in his world that he done simply because it gave him a buzz, that split second when fear vanishes and turns into something that is far better than any drug that money can buy, far better than any amount of alcohol, and best of all its free when you get it
You just spent a lot of cash before hand, but hey what the heck, you only live once!

Have you ever looked at pictures people have posted of themselves here? If that's alpha male then I've got a very different definition than you. More like epsilon drone.

It's a reference to Aldous Huxley's 'Brave New World'. In the book people are genetically engineered rather than born, those destined for the top echelon of society were classified Alpha and were largely tall, beautiful and perfect. Those at the bottom were classified 'Epsilon' denied oxygen during gestation and are described as skulking ugly characters.

To quote the book

"In Epsilons we don’t need human intelligence."

Why bother having a 1.1 Nova, Saxo or a DC02 (or any other type of Dyson/Integra ) that you plan your corners in when you can effortlessly drive a performance car?

Having said that I have the use of three cars:
A daily older car, parking at the train station tip runs and picking the boys up from footie.
A Sporty Hatch (Papa\Nicole) which the wife uses for commuting/taking the kids to Child Minders and I use if its parked at the front of the drive.
My Scoobie which I use all weekend, long 'family' trips and a couple of regular evenings trips to training & gym in the week.

I am under 40, like a car for how it drives, rather than how it looks (Scoobie aint the best looking, or best handling, but has good wet road grip!) and do the odd track day. Am I a stereotype?

Question:
Has anyone noticed how some people are so 'up their own ends' about how good their particular choice of car is, above all others! Very sad.

It is lovely to drive and compared to my STI costs 50% less to insure, uses 150% less fuel and costs 300% less to maintain. With the money I have saved I can buy a nice little apartment in the Alps where I can moutain bike in the summer and ski in the winter. When I get too old for such wildness I can sell it for a huge profit and add the money to my pension fund.

If you live in the middle of nowhere then I can see the merits of the Scoob. But unless your life revolves around modding, track days and scooby club meetings the only case for these cars is an emotional one. There is no rational argument in their favour. I am starting to sound like Mr Spock

Boring question time. Does anyone know the approximate amount of money that you have to save in order to get a pension worth, say, £25,000 per year when you retire at 65? Just a rough guess.
