Well, if you're in Chilwell, it could quite easily be that your garden is part of the old barracks which was huge in the old days (but sadly not anymore). So could just be an old local forces remnant.

If its .303 chances are it was dropped as spent or jammed shell from a fighter in WW2 and has been unearth since.
We used to find loads of them with metal detectors in Kent, as kids and polished them up to trade at school How things have changed.
I think the bottom of a 7.62 SA has 3 id markings spaced 120deg from each other.

Back in the old days (apparantly) chilwell was a very small village surrounded by fields and a lot of the local surrounding land was used as training areas for troops and the tanks. Pop down to the barracks and ask them to ID it for you

Usually they have a date either 2 digit or 4 digit. The 72 could be 1972.
The other numbers usually designate some or all of manufacturer/calibre/powder type/round type... unfortunately there is no standard for this though.
If it was 7.62 and British then it would usually have a (x) sign on it indicating that it conforms to NATO spec.
