Who On Here Has Either Owned An Evo/Driven One??

fq300 started with the evo 7,but if you had a 400bhp evo 7 then you would'nt look backa t an impreza thats for sure.
I've just sold my 400bhp gt and the only impreza that can compare is the spec c anything less then a spec c is just not upto the job.

Are you trying to imply that his evo 7 was figment of my imagination with this comment "if you had a 400bhp evo 7". Well it was a pig to drive round town with its twin plate cusco clutch and it sounded like a hair dryer.
I now have a 380bhp sti 3 and that is so much more fun to drive, it does not handle quite as well nor does it stop as well but that is due to evo having £20 k spent on mods to the engine, suspension and brakes! 6 pot AP brakes at the front and 4 pots are the rear, with more bracing on it then a teenager with bad teeth!

I really should give my mate another go now my Scooby has 320bhp i.e. enough to keep a FQ340 honest.
Just goes to show, horses for courses, each to their own etc..

I'll have my 2 pence worth! Owned both WRX PPP and a VIII. As the conclusion above the evo lacks character but the evo is more clinical. I don't agree with the steering feel part but the ride is alot harder and it is unsettled on bumpy roads. Servicing is a bugger for the evo but if you go to the right dealers you'll get good discount, subarus can be just as bad.The tunability of the evo is incredable. £200 for a used downpipe and de-cat mid section and £500 for a re-map and hey presto 350 BHP!!!! Both are fantastic cars and my heart belongs to subaru and as an every day car it is better but i know the evo has the better hand + is rarer!
if i had my way i would have both!

one sti wrx, 2 p1s and 2 evos, a 7 and a fq330.
Back now with a type R.
My 7 was a forgettable experience. Quite bland and to be honest apart from the handling it was no better than my P1. In fact my second P1 was noticeably quicker and much more of a dramatic car to drive.
My yellow fq330 was superb - probably the best car i have ever driven and I do 500 miles a week and use all my cars every day. But, and the big but is the expense. They are real money drainers esp if you have a warranty as Mitsi will cancel any claim once you start to mod. Service every 4500 miles £250 a time at least. Disk warp, clutches go, and you spend big money keeping it going even when nothing really goes wrong. Then theres depreciation and that for me was the killer. If you have an evo for sale with anything over 20000 miles on the clock, forget it. My Fq330 was totally un modified, showroom condition, maintained regardless of cost. Bought for £24k and sold for £16k after 18 months - all because it had 35000 miles on the clock - it took months to sell and everyone ties to knock £2/3k off the asking price becuase of the market.
My current Subaru type R is 6 years old and hasn't the image of a bright yellow evo. But someone else has picked up most of the depreciation, it handles almost as good as the 8, and goes like stink, plus it sounds much better. Ok its done 70000 miles and so if something goes, then it will get pricey, but Mitsi wanted £2k just to renew the warranty at 36000 miles which is when I thought lets go back to Subaru.
They are all wonderful cars and to be honest in 5 years I have never had a major fault with any of them and have covered well over 50000 miles. But I don't really modify them, keep them well serviced and generally look after them. Its just the Evo is so expensive and the type R offers 99% of the rewards for half the price.
The new 9 360 looks good though!!

I went from a Scooby to an E46 M3 and then quickly to an Evo IX FQ340 with mods.
The Evo (as well as the new age STIs) can be skippy on bumpy roads (although neither are anywhere near as bad as the M3), but other than that it is great. Running costs are cheap for the performance, engine is ridiculously tunable. Service intervals at 4500 miles are inconvenient rather than expensive. The chassis, diffs, steering and seats are brilliant. Range on the IX with MIVEC with 55 litre tank is like a Subaru.

evo
ihad an evo5 for just over a year and it cost me a fortune in servicing and running costs.I bought it from our local mitsi dealer and they insisted i took out a warranty with them at an extra cost of £400.I certainly needed it as i had many visits back to them to sort out all sorts of problems, including new a.y.c.pump(£2500)fitted,warped discs, rough running, etc. Even though i only did 2500 miles in a year the dealer insisted that i had the full cambelt service done at a cost to me of £750 At a local car meet i met the previous owner of the car and he took great delight in tellig me that he had blown the engine to bits at over 140mph chasing a mates motor bike I checked the engine in the car to find that it had no engine no stamped on it!
the dealer refused to take any responsibility for the car and i ended up selling it at a great loss.
I test drove an evo 7 but i didnt feel it had the same "rawness" of the evo5(when it was running)

Best of Both ???
Aaaaaaahhh the best of both ... alas although the Evo was an amazing drive it was also a real money-pit and was sold a couple of weeks ago ... currently resisting the temptation to take up the offer of a test-drive of a new FQ-360 ... and a friend is just about to take delivery of a new one in black and is dangling a very large carrot - brand new import FQ-360 in silver for just under £25k ... hmmmmm

I know you can buy a JDM GSR for £21k from carplanet, which is easy to upgrade to 400 BHP for about £600.

When I was looking for an Evo in April, the carplanet deal at £22-23K at the time was what I was going to go for, but then a very lightly used FQ340 came up that was a bargain. The best discount from a UK dealer on a new car was about £2k which still make them rather over-priced given the 10K first year depreciation on an FQ340 from list price.
Some importers use the FQ label, but they aren't really FQs. I would assume that this is what your friend is getting in the £20-25K range. They are nearly as good, but the used values are not anything like the same as people want UK cars, that had some swing for me as you have a wider variety of insurance companies, and I did find that quotes were cheaper for UK vs JDM. Also the power upgrade is less from 345 or 366 BHP, so the insurance loading for modifying is a little lower than from the official JDM power.
Worth confirming what you/your friend is getting as a lot have been misled.
If you can really get a genuine FQ360 in the 20-25K range I would be interested in buying some to sell on!

I have had:
MY99 UK 300+BHP
MY99 STi5 RA 360BHP
Porsche 917CS
Now MY06 Evo FQ340 + Mods (420ish)
I truely believe the best of the 4 for fun was the original MY99 with VF23 mapped by Bob & Branko.
However for a car that works well with blistering allround pace you can't beat the Evo with minimal mods. The speed you have to do to find the limits IMO spoils the fun of the car a bit though.
The best way to describe the Evo is a superb package straight out of the box Vs the Subaru it is better. The Geometry of the car is far, far better. You only need to look at the amount of aftermarket parts available for Subaru suspensions Vs Late 789 Evos. However both engines and suspensions can be tuned to be within a whisker of each other. Tuner GP, TOTB, Time Attack are all Testemony to this.
