I think the thing with the ol' Deck debait of weather the new boys are any better than the 1210's is irrelevant really
you may get a Vestex/Stanton whatever thats technically better, more torque, starts quicker, smoother pitch etc.. then you'll go to play out in a club where they'e got Technics and you'll be like a fish out of water!
Just a case of getting used to the feel of them i guess.
Suppose its like a guitar player learning for years on a guitar then playing a concert with one which is 'better' but he wont feel as comfortable with...

I think that 1210s have been known as the best for sooo long and used in all clubs for god knows how long that as soon as anything comes along that clames to be better than them everyone formes an opinion befor giving them a fair go.

i think thats true to an extent...
One of the bars i work at has American Audio direct drives, must admit when i first saw them i looked at them with the same snobbery that any technics regular does with rival brands. i was very pleasently supprised though, def more torquey than the 1210's, adjustable start and brake speeds, reversable, adjutable pitch range
and all for less than £200!
can tell the build quality etc isnt as good but still, good value for money i'd say!
people who are 'in the know' always come over and make some sort of comment of "oh, your not using technics" followed with a tut or sigh of some sort!
PLEASE NOTE
*** OWNING TECHNICS DOES NOT MEAN YOU ARE A GREAT DJ ***

to be fair
and this is not a dig in any way shape etc
do any serious djs still play vinyl ?
im a taste maker dj and get 40 odd promos a week
last month i had literally zero vinyl promos!!
admittedly its the first month ive had nothing on vinyl
but do you guys actually buy records and do they still even promo vinyl?
i have 2 mint 1210s in my conservotory with a lovely numark mixer and some brand new monitors
but its just a nostalgic trip more than anything
the advent of cd turntables and abby wabby mean so much more

i understand everything is moving on ie cd ipod mixers final scratch and it's all going really hi tec but for me there is nothing like mixing with vinyl. all the new automix softwear you can get now can make anyone mix like a pro. mixing vinyl takes so much more skill and imho is sooo much more fun
Wez sti. i know what you mean mate! i know alot of people who got 1210 and thought it would auotmaticly turn them into the k9's undercarege lol

Moving back to the original topic - I'm a bedroom DJ, but work for a label and producer in my spare time, so get lots of tunes upfront (shame I can't mix them well).

Nah, I was just curious to how many people on here were DJs and what they did!
Im a DJ, bars but mostly clubs!
I have 2 Numark Axis 9s which are getting sold as I'd like a set of CDxs(ones with a vinyl on top but are CD)
Been DJing since I was 16, im now 22 (Just) I wouldnt consider myself amazing, but im faily confident in my skills! I like to try new things in sets to see how the crowd react like dropping a classic breakdown in the middle of tiesto's Remake of Adagio for strings, like the odd pellas over tunes and I love playing funky house and electro house.
But nothing feels better than playing some heavy Rap and R&B while scratching and cutting every 5secs like they do in the DMCs or playing scouse to people my age and seeing them all go mental when a huge choon comes on!
Do you all enjoy it or do you find it terrifying turning up to a gig thinking im gona do crap? Every week I feel like that!

speaking for myself
beatmatching i take for granted
ive been djng for nearly 20 yrs so if i cant do it now it would be a bit pathetic
i can do things with vinyl that most cant
stereo mixing, phasing, tripple tracking, drops, fills, delays etc
i have moved on to video editing as a career as i now have babies but have loved working the decks
old at 34

I did ten years with First Leisure 80s / 90s - fun pubs and clubs- back in the days when RM ran DJ of the year- which I entered a good few times. Not telling you how I did though- those that matter already know ![Wink](images/smilies/wink.gif)
Worked Discotheque Royale, Dome (and DomeII), Valentino's (Stoke), no end of Ritzy's (non first leisure!), the legendary Palace (Blackpool) etc etc etc. Did the opening for Velfarre in Tokyo, the biggest club in Japan at the time, and was out there during the Kobe earthquake (shat myself that day!!!) Several seasons abroad, but started mobile and had a lucky break from SW DMC co-ordinator at the time Tristan B- think he's still around Bristol somewhere? used to rent a room off me in the early 90s.
Sadly now retired, impossible to work the clubs properly and have a family that you're devoted to.
those who've been there know where I'm coming from, the two can't happily live together.
btw, I was always a cheesy party joc primarily, and a shi*t hot mixer if fed regularly with bud and JD

I use A combination of CD's & Vinyl, preference is vinyl (more so as my category is Classics - 91 - 97) although i do play non commercial Hardhouse and funky house
CD's will never match vinyl, I've been mixing 15 years & you can physically do more with vinyl than cd's
I also produce my own tracks

cd mixing is now so far away from what vinyl can do its crazy to think otherwise
every serious dj is moving to cd decks now
with vinyl you cant loop tracks, timestrtch, tripple track with ease etc

with the new cd decks you can alter a track and effectively remix it live
djs like sasha, oakenfold and tiesto embrace abbleton and literally deconstruct tracks and re assemble them on the go

thats all well and good if you are stuck in a timewarp
but how do you go about getting new promos when vinyl pressings dont exist anymore
no tastemaker djs play vinyl anymore
not one
