One of my closest pals has a stutter David, he laughs at himself more than anyone else does ![Smile](images/smilies/smile.gif)
His usual comment is, "slap me on the back of the head next time"

But others can't. Imagine a professional person who needs to give presentations. A nightmare every time. Or a student who knows that in six months she has to give a dissertion in front of the class and can't sleep for the worry.
Anyway I'll say no more. dl

Yes, I suffer from a stammer. Now it's not as bad as many people, but it has had a massive effect on my life.
Speaking to people who you have just met can be extremely embarrassing, especially when they smirk or laugh in your face. Chatting up women is just a total ******* nightmare. Hence why I'm single
![Frown](images/smilies/frown.gif)
Now, I myself for some reason go through months of only stammering slightly, while I can go months of stammering quite badly. Go figure?
I work in the construction industry, and have to attend design and site meetings, which I just dread, for obvious reasons.
I often get accused of being quiet and shy. I'm not shy, it's just why embarrass myself trying to talk to a stranger, or try chatting up a lass just to get laughed at. It does happen, and has happened, many times, to the point now that I just don't bother. Why go home feeling **** after being laughed at.
![Frown](images/smilies/frown.gif)
Now some people will say it shouldn't matter. It's the person inside that counts. What a load of sh1te !!!! No matter how good a personality you may have, a stammer will ruin any chance you have of chatting anyone up.
As for reading out loud? Funnily enough, I can usually read out loud and not stammer. I once had to do a pub quiz, and was physically shaking just before I had to pick up the microphone and start the quiz. Yet I didn't stammer once, much to the annoyance of some people who thought it would be a right laugh listening to me stammer away in front of a packed pub.
As for your typing comment. People like you are the type that will make a point of laughing as loud as you can in front of a stammerer. Maybe you were picked on as a child, so this is a way of making you feel better. Look at your own imperfections before you start taking the p1ss out of people who have a stammer. It's not like being overweight, where you chose to eat to much. Stammering isn't a choice.
I truly believe, that in many ways, it's ruined my life. I've had speech therapy when I was in my early 20's, but I still have a stammer.
My parents couldn't be arsed to get me any help when I was young, where it probably would have helped more. Why? "You'll just grow out of it". Yeah, right !!
STILover
PS. I was never picked on at school for my stammer. The first days at comprehensive took care of that. Someone took the p1ss, they got punched, hard. People soon knew not to take the p1ss.

STILover,
I had a small amount of NHS funded speech therapy when I was younger and when my stammer was first acknowledged. I was lucky enough for it to wear off as my therapist as rubbish from what my mum said.

A stammer is a condition when you `speak`. How on earth can you stammer when thinking?
Maybe she needs to think a little harder before writing stupid questions.

Stilover, not a personal problem of mine(many others tho) but I believe hypnosis can have success, not for everyone but maybe. This can be arranged through NHS, not for saving money reasons but it does weed out the self taught money grabbers out there.

I tend to stammer more when I am nervous, or am around people I don't know. If your in a position where you know you have to speak alot, you panic about stammering.
Also you build up a self defence system in your head. When talking to someone, if you want to say a certain long intellegent word but are unsure or certain that you won't be able to say it, my brain finds another, shorter less intellegent word that it knows I can say to replace it. This itself can make me look a little stupid itself.
Private hypnosis is always an option, but I've always been a little sceptic about the whole hypnosis thing.

Sorry Stilover, I did not make myself clear, If your life is seriously affected you can get help on the NHS, however if the delay/affectivness is a concern they can point you in the direction of the qualified people they do use. This as you say would need to be done on a private basis, one appointment may be enough to test whether it may suit you.

Having said I wouldn't comment any more.....
Every now and again the Daily Mail or similar will report on a miracle "cure". Some while back it was a special breathing technique and recently there was a device implanted in the ear (although the concept had been around for years). And of course hypnosis and group therapy. What tends to happen is that they may work for a while but then the improvement fades within a few months.
In reality the stammerer becomes skilled at changing the words they use and avoid the problems sounds, "n" and "m" are often a challenge so instead of saying "naughty girl" when the dog misbehaves the person says ""bad girl".
If anything comes out of this thread I hope it's a greater awareness of what a stammer can actually mean to sufferers. dl

One of the worst moments in my life was a Junior school. At registration the teacher (I won't say the tw@ts name) wanted everyone to reply with "Yes Sir"
Every ******* day I struggled with saying that. Every single day he made the class wait till I stammered it out.
He once did it when we went on a school trip. all the parents were in our classroom just before we set off, when he held registration. The B@stard made a point of forcing me to say "Yes Sir" in front of pupils and parents alike. I just couldn't say it. Yet even though I was stood in front of him, and he could see me, he made a point of getting me to say it. I just couldn't, especially as everyone (Including parents) were laughing at me.
They stopped laughing when I fainted though !!!!
I swore I'd stick one on that **** if ever I saw him out when I was older.
I tend to struggle more with hard sounding words. Phoning up for an "Appointment" is a real struggle. And for some reason I can hardly ever say "Open" in a sentence, like when asking someone to leave the window or door "open"

I have dyslexia so school was a dream for me, hated most teachers, mostly English teacher. Tried to embarrass me daily, (I know there are good and bad out there but this one was a pratt). However after starting my own business some years later she came to me for a car and did not recognise me(about 5" taller and SEVERAL stones later) and I sold her the worst car we had, gave her f'all for her trade in and loved every minute of it, petty I know but well deserved

I can see how having a stammer could make things like chatting people up really awkward and I feel for you. I guess if they're a nice person though they'll understand and if they don't, they're not worth chatting up in the first place.
I can imagine it really doesn't help when people post up rubbish like this on here.
Sometimes the whole "dumb blonde stupid question bit" wears very thin Sara.

Sti, sorry to hear about your speech problem, sound like a lot to deal with, I personally dont have a problem but weirdly enough when I read things I have written back I often type words twice ?
Remember, everyone has a cross to bear of some description, even those who appear to have all their **** together.

A life long friend of mine suffers from a stammer fairly badly. He got married last month and I can honestly say that I've never seen somebody shake as much as he did when doing his speech !
He got through it ok, the odd pause here and there but obviously everybody there had known him for ages so don't really notice it any more.
I think with him it's down to nerves too. Strangely, never stammers at all when pi$$ed up ! I guess it's the lack of inhibition/nerves.
He may too say that it's ruined his life but as one of his good friends I would say bollox, youre married, run your own business and have a good bunch of mates ! Doesn't seem ruined to me !
As someone said earlier, everyone has a cross to bear, you just don't know about most because they're not visible/audible.
Someone who shall remain nameless (OK it's me but ssshh) suffers from Eczema on the face quite badly from time to time (too tired/stressed, been on the pi$$ etc) and it's a real ballache for ......erm.......him, yes him !.![Wink](images/smilies/wink.gif)
Used to pi$$ me off when people talked to me face to face and their eyes were moving all around my face and not looking me in the eyes, still does a bit I suppose but like I said, everyones got something, console yourself with that.
Like my Eczema, your stammer will probably/hopefully ease or go completely sooner or later.
If not, **** it, at least we're not muslims/Rottweillers/any other group getting a bashing at the mo![Smile](images/smilies/smile.gif)
PS Sorry for the slight hijack but if anyone has any bright ideas for facial Eczema I'd be pleased to hear about it. Tried all the E45 variants, Minocin tablets etc but nothing 'cures' it. The best results I get are with Oilatum Emoliant and Aqueous cream for topical treatment to ease it but I'm open to try any suggestions. (Hoping that this newly discovered anti allergy breakthrough might be a go-er

i asked the question i did because i honestly dont know how each and every person is affected, i am interested. i stated in my original post that i wasnt intending to offend anyone. isnt it better that society can understand conditions like yours as for so long it has been swept under the carpet
![Cuckoo](images/smilies/cuckoo.gif)
the reason you are single is unlikely to be because of your stammer, its probably your attitute to people that dont fully understand about the condition

I think there has been crossed wires here, I don't for a single moment think you would post anything offensive over a condition like a stammer. Stilover having the condition was obviously less objective but to respond in that manner was not wise.

Firstly, as every body knows, people suffer from stammering, correct? Yes.
I don't know anyone stupid enough to ask "Do you stammer in your thoughts. Do you stammer when you type on a keyboard? "
You weren't trying to understand the condition, you were taking the p1ss. Now your just trying to type your way out of it, by making me out to be over sensitive.
And I quote :
just wondered what its like when you are typing. when i type i say the words inside my head, if you stutter do you stop typing until you get the words out?
That my dear, is taking the p1ss.
Calling me a Tw@t, and a @rsehole won't change that fact.

No mate, Sara is tactless I will grant you and she does have a habit of putting her foot in her mouth but she is not malicious.
