But the top speed might be interesting. Unless the Type R has the longer 5th fitted.
I'd say the Type R would be squicker to 70-100ish but then I'm sure the uk car would make some of the ground up with the longer gearing. In fact I know this is true, having played with many a modded type R. but then again mine isn't standard

As I commented on a thread the other day:
My std UK Scooby was a lot nicer to live with everyday than my mates Evo 6, mainly because of the much better ride over potholed UK roads.
Now, obviously his was the faster car!
HOWEVER
In a back to back comparison over a favourite B road (and having swapped cars) we both agreed that my car was quicker in that environment. It's suitability for our roads paid dividends (sp?). The Evo bucked and crashed over the road and one had to slow down for fear of being bounced off the tarmac. Scooby just glided over the rough stuff.
To the poster who queried Simon's assertion that the Sti has 280 based on the brouchure. My Uk brouchure says the turbo has a 0-60 time of 6.8 seconds.
Yeah right, with flat tyres maybe!!
The 90s saw a gentlemans agreement between the manufacturers and the japanses government that meant that no cars would be produced with over 280bhp.
Subaru adhered to that agreement...........................on paper!

I know the original question was quicker, but somebody else mentioned better and better depends on what you want from a car. Re the comment on every day use my RB5 is not actually used every day, but I have driven cars with very very stiff suspension in the past and when I test drove an STI a few years back I felt the suspension was just too stiff to live with on Scottish Roads. When I sold my last classic I decided after test driving a few Scoobs that the RB5 had the right balance handling wise and ride quality for our roads. That is just my opinion though I believe Subaru chose a softer ( far from soft though) set up on UK cars for a reason.
Anyway the STI5 is an awesome car and as far as the original question is concerned there is no argument the STI5 is the quicker car. I would love one if the roads were a bit better up here.

Anyway, see, I was trying to defend your motor !! (Doesn't seem to be any dispute that its a good car anyway).

Saying that.....
Probably for the first month or two after getting my type-r I would UNDOUBTEDLY have been quicker in my old UK turbo. It was more forgiving, less aggressive and didn't punish mistakes in a fatal manner!
However, after really learning how to drive the R properly and working the DCCD out, should I be insane enough to drive it at 100%, it would EASILY outpace a regular turbo, even if it had the same power as me. It is sharper, grippier and better balanced, even if you have to be prepared to take control when you do something foolish!
Now it has the ASTs, MRT topmounts, ARBs and various bits and pieces, it's in another league again.
Having owned two UK cars previously though, they are hugely effective at covering ground efficiently with minimum fuss. I certainly don't look at them now and consider them inferior in any way..... just different.....
