I certainly wouldn't call myself a freak, but I comfotably fit into the top category. I'll play tennis up to 3 times a week (used to be 2 hours a session, a bit less now nights are drawing in), and have a couple of 30-60 minute sessions on the rowing machine and/or maybe a couple of runs (up to 5 miles). Plus minimum couple of miles brisk walk every day at work to lunch and back. Of late I've been doing different exercise due to moving house recently, e.g. multiple reps of shifting 35kg stone slabs laying a new patio etc (builds you up a bit, no real effort carrying a 25kg bag of gravel/sand on each shoulder yesterday)

P.S. On a day visit to hospital earlier in the week (my first in over 20 years), the doctor told me I was "obviously fit", so I guess I'm fit. Don't know my BMI but I'm a fraction under 6' and 11 stone 5, so I guess it's probably fine.

During full swing football season I can be doing up to 6 full length (90 minute) games either refereeing or running the line.
In addition to this I train with the A-League/State League referees for an hour and a half each week.
On top of this I have multi-gym equipment at home including a mtb which is hooked up to a device which makes it static when I can't be arsed to go out and a cross trainer. I'll do light training cardio and weights each day then every other day a 20 min session of pilates.
I've only recently started doing this as I have started to put weight on with the season finishing - I struggle to reduce my eating habits and I am one of those people that unless I follow a strict diet and regime I'll pile on the pounds.
I'll be joining a gym soon so I can swim before I go to work each day.

5 gym sessions per week, each consisting of between a 5km and 10km run, then;
mondays - chest and tri,
tuesdays - back and bi,
wednesdays - shoulders and legs,
thursdays - STEAK NIGHT!!
fridays - chest and tri,
saturdays - back, bi, legs and shoulders,
sundays - maybe a bit of tennis, but not so much now it's getting colder
I'd say roughly 8 hours per week.

I wouldn't have thought a couple of hours a day 3 or 4 times a week would put anyone in the realms of 'freakish'.
My routine is simple, an hours road running every other day. On the alternate days I cycle. Do some gym work but don't want to bulk up so keep this light. Finish off most training sessions with a 20 minute swim.

90minutes of football which I usually play the full 90 but not all the time.
20minute run twice a week in the evenings. Wednesday an hour to hour and half football training. Keeps me fit enough, eating a bit more healthy and cut out the beer and lost over a stone in the last month

Each of these are about an hour long except the sprint. Weekly:
3x 10km lunchtime runs
2x 40km evening/weekend bike rides
1x Weights session
1x Sprint session
I do my best to eat healthily but it doesn't always work out that way

At least I managed to get rid of 4.5 stone because the chemo messed up my sense of taste and made me hate eating for 6 months.
Now its finished my sense of taste is coming back and also my appetite. What a worry, don't want to put any back on again.

There's not enough options
I train up to 5 times per week:
3 x 1.5 hour sessions per week in hotel gym (20 mins weights, 30 mins run, 30 mins cycle)
every 2nd Sat I have my personal trainer
Every sunday (well not every,..) 10k run and 1.5 hour mountain bike.
In training for monsterman..and getting rather fit in the process and losing the stomach...

3-4 hours average proper exercise?
I'd say it's nearer 15-20 minutes. 3-4 hours if you count walking, climbing stairs etc, but look around you and see how many people actually do real (sprorting or whatever) exercise at all.
It's not many
SB (about 4 hours on average, btw)

Normal exercise - you don't sweat it out (i.e.general walking)
Proper exercise - you sweat it out, get the heartbeat up, get those lungs working etc.
I'm getting into it more, need to rid myself of a stone or so, all around the belly (side view I look preggers ). However, I'm told I'm fit and have a resting heartbeat of mid 50s. So depite being overweight in the bmi stakes, I'm far fitter than many others I know who has a normal bmi but doesn't exercise much.
Fortunately the cycling doesn't take much motivation, it's far quicker to cycle (15/20 mins door to door) than it is to get public transport or take the car (all taking 30+mins in rush hour). Saves me £40 a month in bus fares too!

on the subject of heart rates....next question then.....whats yours at rest?
mines around 52 (supposedly pretty good). Rises to 186 during Karate sparring - seems about right (220-your age (35) is suppose to be the max)

As it's American, the comparison thing will make you feel slim. Apparently I'm in the 18th percentile (i.e. slimmer than 82% of Americans with a BMI of 21.9.
NeilT - Haven't checked resting heart rate recently, but typically low 50s when lying down at night etc, think the lowest I ever remember measuring was 48. Did have a friend who was down to mid-high 30s, but he used to run half marathons in under 1hr 10 mins (to my mind that does count as freakish!)
While we're at it, shall we throw in blood pressure (consistently just over 120/60), body fat percentage (not had it checked recently), average time to run a mile over a 5 mile+ run (about 8 mins/mile last time I tried), and 101 other measures of fitness?

A BMI test doesn't distinguish between fat and muscle. It's purely a mass indicator. You could have a relatively low fat percentage but be quite muscular, therefore have a higher than expected BMI as muscle weighs more than fat.
A classic exmaple of this would be pro Bodybuilders. Extremely low fat percentage, high in muscle mass, but on the BMI they would be classed as obese atleast.

I think you can only take the BMI index seriously if you don't do any exercise at all. I have a BMI of 28, which makes me overweight (5'8" - 190lbs)...perhaps I need to lose 3-4kgs, but I've been at the gym 5 times a week for 14 months...I'm not unhealthy.
