Lying down in bed the other night, resting heart rate was 47bpm I managed to hit 190bpm whilst running up a mountain in Scotland earlier this year as part of a race

Is it some of those dodgy underwater breath holding people that can lower their heart rate to 3 bpm?!?!!!...surely their lungs must be ultra efficient.

3bpm is freakish and can't be healthy, if they ever achieve that!

Dave - 56bpm resting is not a bad thing, varies from person to person but generally much under 70 is a sign that you're moderately fit, under 50 is a sign that you're probably very fit. 133/77 is still within the OK/normal range although it's towards the upper end of OK; general theory is that over 135/85 is possibly a cause for minor concern. Also, if yours was measured when you'd just walked somewhere or whatever, your genuine resting blood pressure could well be lower - exercising (even gently) temporarily increases your blood pressure.

Voted as pretty much non excercising.

But in my favour I must have a fast metabolism or something as I'm 6ft tall 12 stone on the dot, eat like a horse (but eat well, not junk), don't smoke, or drink and built like a rake.
SO as yet I have no need to exercise for the sake of it.
I used to go mountainbiking, I used to Scuba dive, I used to go swimming with me Dad every Sunday, Now I'm just a lazy ****** that comes home from work and vegetates infront of the PC.
I'm sure it'll all catch up with me one day.
Interesting reading the above few posts... my resting heart rate is 55 (at night in bed before I go to sleep) so cant all be bad.

hades, thanks for the heads up. I wouldnt say Im very fit, in fact I carry a fair bit of flab tbh even though I hide it well that was general relaxing, wasnt in bed or anything like that. Basically sat on the sofa watching telly. I honestly expected it to be alot higher as Im going through a fairly stressful time so Id hate to see what my heart rate and blood pressure are when Im at peace ;D

Since I started my new job (2 weeks) I've only been running 3 times. Yesterday I ran 3.5 miles in 20 minutes and it damn near killed me.

I am a indoor climber, so I do my pull ups and push ups daily to keep my strengh, no where near the level of fitness I need to be although.

Jesus...a 20 minute sprint. Rather you than me. The most mental thing I did on the treadmill was run 10k in an hour, then the machine wouldn't let me run any more, so reset it and did another 15mins....knackered isn't the word

3.5 miles in 20 minutes would "damn near kill" most people; that's averaging well under 6 minutes/mile. An awful lot of people can't sustain that sort of pace even with a lot of training. To put it into context, sustain it for 1 1/4 hours, you'd comfortably be in the Elite athlete category on the great north run, only about 16 minutes behind the men's half-marathon all time world record.

Either you're (a) a hell of a lot fitter than you're making out, (b) somewhat mistaken with the time/distance or (c) with proper training you could be Britain's number 1 distance runner by Christmas

Just did the run in reverse... not badwards

Ok what I do is run from my house to my dads, its quite an even run and its just under 3.5 miles.According to my car.. so lets take away roundabouts and long corners... so say what 3.3 miles. I run there and drive back in my bros car (hes away) then tonight I drove there and ran back, its slightly more up hill and it took me 31 minutes.. I honestly didnt feel I could keep up the pace and was really pleased that I made it.

I'm in no way mega fit but you'd be surprised how much will power and fitness climbing actually takes.

for the sake of exact times, my first time was around 20 minutes, no more than 25-26 I'd say.

That post really wasn't like a bost post, I have friends who run cirlces (pardon the pun) around me. Its all about giving your all for short times when climbing... like sprint jog sprint jog...

hope this clears things up

ive been training twice a day, 5 days a week since april...45 mins-1 hour of weights in the morning then cv for between 30-60 mins in the evenings...

its all coming along quite nicely and im at a level where i can run 5 fairly flat miles in under 35 minutes without really pushing myself...not bad for a 34 year old whos at least 2 stone overweight...

i do have a specific long term goal though which gives me the focus and determination but ive noticed im turning into a gym ****, especially when there are fatties around who barely even work a sweat up on the bike in the 2 mins they can be bothered to keep it up for...i know its awful but i partly use this as my motivation...

I go through stages where i will hit the gym most nights every week, then after a few months i take time out & put the weight i have lost back on.
To be honest i am in one of those couldnt care less moods & owing to my injury i wont be training for at least 6-8 weeks.
My problem is i love beer too much also with me travelling a lot, most nights away are spent in the hotel bar.
