Default petrol types

Folks,
I have been using 97 Excellum (Total) and it is a noticable improvement in perf and MPG from their 95 ordinary stuff. My manual tells me I should use 98 octane fuel but I cant find any over 97?

BP's 97 grade (can't recall name, was ok too).

What is the octane ratings on the Shell variants?

Rgds,
Mikez

PS.
Folks,
What do you all recommend for 225/R17 tyre pressures (2002 Sti(UK) Prodrive)?

The door post specifies 2.3 bar but they look a little low at that (at garage after 0.5mls from cold)?

Pref. in psi.

Damn ! Beaten off the mark !! Good call Torquey !

What the reason for different pressures ~ why do folk use higher pressures on the front ? Is this the consensus ?

I'm absolutely certain I'm seeing around 40 miles more per tank on V-power vs optimax - I get an extra journey to work and back (~44 miles) over what I was getting on optimax per tank. It's not just an illusion or wishful thinking. It does surprise me though and I wonder why there are conflicting reports. My baby is a wrx300.

Certainly noticed an extra 40 odd miles per tank going from normal supermarket unleaded to Optimax (once you guys pointed out the error of my ways using cheap crappy fuel). I'll be honest and say I havent noticed a difference from Opti to V-Power though, although my italian accent has improved after sniffing the vapours while filling up, probably another benefit from the well publicised ferrari relationship. Journey the same, driving style the same, annoying bloke in a Renault Kangoo still trying to kill me on a regular basis.

Might be way off the mark here, but Ive always thought over the years I saw more MPG on my cars when its colder outside, obviously the weather has changed recently (or at least since V Power was introduced) does that have an effect on things?

Just a thought.

I must be driving my car wrong, 'cos i consistently get over 320 miles to a tank out of a 2003 WRX. I've had over 350 miles on several occasions. (i usually do about 10-15 miles after the fuel light comes on)
I have always run it on optimax, except for a couple of rare occasions when BP Ultimate has had to do.
I've just started using VPower and haven't noticed anything yet, but i'm not through a full tank yet.

I always thought u got worse mpg when its colder cause the car takes longer to warm up.

Cooler temperature = higher levels of oxygen in the air = more power = less effort to cover same distance = increase in mpg .... i think!

To be honest, most of the time these days i drive on the motorway. Im not exaclty known for hanging about when i have a clear road in front of me, but i dopn;t fell the need to sit at 6k revs 3 feet from the car in front either.
I think the worst i've had i about 170 miles out of a tank when i was coming back from a mountain bike race up north and i had a clear run almost all the way home.

My car's mapped and is on boost in 5th from 65 mph. I want to drive at that speed on the motorway but my right foot won't let me !!

Where were you mountain biking ? Was it the looney downhill track at Fort William ?! I'm a mountain biker too but with my skill to ***** ratio I'm limited to
Glentress or the like (near Edinburgh).

Anyway, well done on getting economy that would give me a wet blanket !

That particular bad economy, good fun run was from fort william after the 'Ten under the Ben' event last year. Normally i ride Glentress or the other 7 stanes places. Glentress red was fun on tuesday night in the dark. Now i see why they call it spooky wood.

I have 2003 wrx as well. I do a lot of motorway miles and could regularly get 330-350 miles per tank on Optimax more or less sticking to speed limits. I may have had a couple of bad batches of V Power, but on my last couple of trips mpg seems to have dropped to just under 300mpg. Very subjective test I realise. Car currently feels much better on Tesco 99.

very good, cant believe you lot missed this pearl
still talking about fuel and MPG....

cant say I have noticed a massive increase in MPG, as it still hovers around the 270-300 miles per tank..in a classic

i have had my car for around 3 years, and always got around 200 miles to a tank round the doors

280miles on a motorway run

but round the doors has seen this jump from 200 to 220 for no reason what so ever, i have not done any full on motorway only journey yet.
i cant explain it, the only thing that has changed has been the fuel,
i filled up with "jet" 95 ron today on the way home from work 85p litre clutch should be fixed on Thursday

I must have had a ropey batch then. I've had a blistering run today with Tesco 99 on a private stretch of road, but have had a drop in mpg with the V Power. Car was mapped on Optimax and it can't be that different presumably.
Bear in mind I have had over 400 miles out of one 60 litre tank of Optimax!!

Funny, but I've been thinking the exact opposite.

I haven't done any conclusive tests but I feel that my MPG has goen down since the switch to V-Power.

Not doing any more miles but really does seem to be using more fuel.

I'm a Believer

Last four fill ups using V-Power 32mpg every time from my 55 WRX.

Up from the 28-29 I was getting with Premium Unleaded.

Thats at least a 10% increase.

Which makes V-Power Cheaper
