Looks good after the wash Paul

Dashboard should be easy enough, just get a Haynes manual ready and take your time with it

What power were the 2WD versions as std?

Just a wash I haven't scrubbed the wheels yet and all I've done is t-cut where the stripes were and I haven't polished it yet. It'd been sat since April

Slow and steady wins the race ! :-)

You may find a few things wont work, due to earthing, poor fitting clips, just take your time and it will be a piece of pi55.

I think most of the switches are still pluged in but there are still a few wires hanging around. Hopefully with the dash in place it'll become clear where they go. I have a haynes manual in my garage so I'd best find that before I start.

They have 204bhp and 203 lbft I think. I was quite shocked that they only weigh 1200kgs as standard. I thought a sapphire would be heavier.

Stage 1 shouldn't cause issues should it? I don't plan on going any further than that.

Thats one car that i said i would have one day!

I had a cossie looker when i was youger which was nice but never got around to having a real one, mine had the 2wd wheels like yours.

I went a RS national day once and watching them go around the track was superb.

Nice one anyway good luck with it.

Ah. Mine's 2 wheel drive and the T5 gearbox is supposed to be stronger than the MT75. Fingers crossed I don't break it

Nice motor mate, I can't believe the number of numpties, on a performance car oriented bbs, telling you that the wheels & bonnet are wrong

For what it's worth I've had the dash in and out of my XR4x4 on a few occasions now Putting one back in for the first time does look more daunting than it really is. Make sure you get all the screws in across the bottom of the windscreen and down the A pillars properly or it'll creak & squeak, and as DW says take your time, and if you've any problems, ask

Scrubs up well! , I always wanted RWD one myself and never bought one as my friend had lots of problems with his. So stuck to RS turbos but I should of bought a standard one like yourself. I even had a RS1800 instead of one (sad), Had it a short while until I swapped for a Fiesta RS turbo again. Happy owner of a type RA now.

I haven't looked at the for light surrounds yet, I have bigger worries with the dash

I haven't posted it up on there yet. I might do it later today.

I know, even my brother who works at Ford has just text me to ask if I'm going to fit a 4x4 bonnet

I started looking at the dash last night and I've got a resonable idea now where some of the wires go. I'm going to label up the cables that I can identify tonight with masking tape and see what I have left. What I was struggling with last night was the heater air pipes that run behind the dash. There are 2 long pipes that I have in the footwell and 2 pipes that come from the matrix but they don't seem to match up. The pipes from the matrix run to behind the steering column and to the same position on the other side but they are round, the pipes that look like they would join them aren't round though Do you know what I'm talking about?

Thanks

Thats a nice original car there Paul. Definately worth hanging on to. My only recomendation would be to fit the Cambelt cover. A friend of mine who is well known on this forum can tell you all about the expensive results of running a cosworth without one.

Hi Shane

I was having a look around the car last night and sorting out all the dashboard parts and to my suprise I found the cambelt cover in the boot I haven't ever seen a cosworth with a cambelt cover fitted so you can imagine my suprise when I found it I have no idea why everyone runs their cosworths with no cover though

Did your friend suffer damage due to stone or something?

He was actually doing something under the bonnet with the engine running and dropped a screw driver. That little bit of tinkering became very expensive. I'll point him towards this thread, he may fill you in on the details if he can bare to re-live the moment.

Cheers for reminding me Shane......

I was trying to trace a small water leak and was undoing the cam belt cover with a Torx bit.
My pukka Torx set had been lent to my Bro-In-Law, so I was using a small bit on the end of a ring spanner.

Torx bit then fell onto the Cam Cover, rolled under the Cam-belt cover and dropped inside.

It then wedged itself into the crank pulley and cut through and snapped the timing belt.

Clatter....clatter...clatter could then be heard when a new belt was fitted. 10 out fo 16 valves were bent.

Paul,

What ECU is is running, If I remember correctley I have an L6 Stage 1 chip kicking about somewhere. I think the L6 was a late 3-door, early Saphire ECU.

OUCH! that is really unlucky

I should have an L6 in there so I'm told. I looked at the ecu case last night and I didn't see anything that meant anything to me. I just bought a stage 1 chip for it last night but I haven't found out what I need to do to fit it yet Any ideas? It's a superchips one I bought.

Thanks

Had the exact same car 15 years ago , had it chipped to 270 they also changed the wastegate actuator which I beleive is essential, nice car but get used to going sideways in the wet .

RWD Saf cossies I love em !! Best fun you can have that's legal for a few k imo.

I've been (un?)lucky to own
-2 safs and one 3 door cossie
-1 evo integrale
-4 impreza's fastest one being a 98 type ra
-300 ZX TT manual (x2, but one was furbar'd)
-Skyline GTR R32
-Ren Clio V6
-3.2 911 Carrera

Kept the 1st flint grey saf for over 4 years, next longest ownership after that is about 6 months with the 911.

Saf Cossies are uber cool imo, look plain dated blah blah but go like a fkn rocket. Ok book figures aren't all that but it's they way they deliver the power makes them so much fun. I could rattle on and on...but would like to point out that not many people who have actually owned a decent one haven't got a soft spot for them and would have one again...says alot methinks.

Oh pretty simple mechanically so even if they do break alot, not as expensive as new jap stuff to sort.

I will deffo have one again, only the R32 gave me a bigger stiffy when driving it .

ps your g/box yes prob 3rd WILL break lol...and do straight to stage 3 and do the h/gasket as a precaution. Have fun, be careful

Worst thing that happened on my saphire 2 WD was a snapped exhaust camshaft. Ford quoted a 6month wait at the time. Went to GGR and got one for £50 and £50 for new cambelt fitted. Syncro on 4th went twice on mine before 25k. I ran mine on Mobil 1 once run in and it used around a litre per 1k. Swapped to a 10/40 and it used non. No leaks and on a new car too.

Paul,

It was a long time ago.. I think you remove the standard chip and replace it with the new one.

You will need a -31 Actuator to crank up the boost (used to be about £70 from people like PJ Motorsport). From memory I think it gets set to 14psi (I think they run about 8psi as standard).

I don't think the technology in these chips/ecu's is anything like the Subaru's.
All I think the chip does is remove the boost cut limit.

I have compared the hexidecimal code of 2 tuners maps and there is very little in there that gets changed.

Hello!

Sorry for the late reply. It's looking pretty much standard under there!! Even the actuator looks prehistoric.

It certainly has cleaned up well in the other pictures too. Looks a minter.

Don't worry about the gearbox. It will be fine!! 2 friends of mine are running 2wd Cossies at much higher outputs than stage 1. One is at 380bhp at the wheels and has just replaced his detroyed propshaft (split the end open where it slots into the box) and is on his 5th diff. The gearbox is only just getting a bit worn and is the original to the car. The other is running 490bhp at the wheels with another 100+ shot of nitrous on a standard T5 box. His usually last about 12 to 18 months. Both cars get abused at Santa Pod regularly.

When you fit your chip, you will need a -31 actuator too. Usually a stage 1 is 14 PSI boost.

Remove the lid off the ECU and look at the chip and socket on the ECU board. There will be a little semi circular notch in the socket and the chip. They need to be at the same end as each other when you plug the chip in. If you put the chip in wrong, you could damage it (the ECU will be fine but the chip will probably be corrupt).

Hope that helps.
