Does anyone run a BIG Bhp Scoob on the road?

I would say that once you get to about 320BHP, you would be better spending the extra dosh on weight-saving techniques, handling improvements or even driving courses.
There is a guy near me - who owns a lightened 320BHP sti - he has spent a lot of time on the track etc - learning his car's capabilities and he scares the **** out of his passengers - guaranteed. (me included and i drive a 300bhp/tonne westfield sei like i stole it!)
For the additional BIG cost from 320BHP to say 450 / 500 and associated reliability issues - i don't believe the difference in performance is worth it.

In reality, probably different to own & drive. I'll let you know after the Stage 2 18g whether it "just has to be done".

:crylol: I thought the limits of a TD04 would be fine.. Then a VF35 would do the job, then I went for a 20G instead of a 16G 'Just in case' now the 20G will be off the car soon enough.
I think there needs to be some sort of group similar to alcholics annonymous for this ailment

It was great, but on the drive home i was thinking what the next stage would be like and would be as big of a difference.
I very much doubt i'll go past Stage 2. I don't think i could possibly drive any faster, with my ability, road conditions, traffic etc. No-one wants a point n' squirt car.

you reach the limit pretty quickly in a high bhp car i would imagine.
Whereas before with less power, you could put your foot down and feel your car building up speed as it went, then brake for a bend, now you're only on full throttle for a matter of a few seconds before you have to press the brakes for bends, yet now, you find you are pressing the brakes a lot harder, just because of the sheer speed obtained in the same distance.
what gearboxes do all you lot use and are they noisey buggers??

Indeed, it’s too demanding for the road and should really only be opened up on the track. You have to be constantly thinking ahead to understand when you can apply the throttle because when you do, you pile on so much speed so quickly that you have to let off before you know it! Driving this car brought into perspective the fact that I don’t want mega power out of my Scoob – maybe just bring it up to 330/330
(Once a car is quick the driver ability becomes thé main determining factor)
Obviously on the track - there is alot of point to bigger power. Also I am not knocking the people who chuck money at getting big BHP - respect . Must be a good sense of achievement to see the power gains.
What a great thread - by the way - what scoobnet should be all about

Pretty much as Alan, i probably have at least £20k's worth of parts on my car as it stands in current spec, but have probably spent double that getting there.
Fecking stupid when you think about it!
£2k will just about buy you some good brakes and wheels needed to cover the brakes, just so the car can slow down as Alan describes.
I have driven some of my friends cars (subarus) down roads i know like the back of my hand, and positvely scared the sh!te out of them, just from speed. None of those people will go in my car, unless its on a nice flat straight road.
I took someone out in David Wallis car about this time last year, with my PPG Synchro gearbox on, and he was all manly "they cant be that fast, etc, etc" After my dad convinced me to show him 1st hand, and david agreed, i drove out up the road 1.25 miles, round the roundabout and back. Now this is on a dead straight road, super smooth, no hidden access roads, etc, and he was like a quivering wreck!
Some of you will ahve been to Scooby Shoot Out when they did the 1.25mile top speed section from a standing start. Heres a run down of roughly what sort of speeds cars achieve in that distance, subject to wings, head wind etc.
Standard 130~140
250~300 140~150
300~350 150~160
350~400 160~170
Not bad you may think, now watch this Lateral Performance 0-194.8 in 1 Mile at TOTB 5 - Google Video which is me driving the Lateral Performance car at TOTB this year, where i achieved 194.8mph in 1 mile!! At the 1/4mile mark i was doing 136mph.
Relevance? Imagine trying to accelerate like that on your favourite B road, that has a decent straight section, with enclosed hedges, undulating tarmac, potholes etc!
It's a total different concept, you find yumps that were never there before, your skipping as it brakes, because you still going that fast, you have put 50 different steering corrections in over the last 1/2 mile, trying but failing to keep it in a true straight line!
One day, i will put the camera in the car

Out of all the cars I have driven in anger, I think stevens feels the easiest to control, It also has 18" wheels opposed to my 17"'s Not that I have ever pushed stevens anywhere other than a straight line due to the arch rub
From my point of view from having a std scoob in 2001 ~ 208bhp then getting 345bhp (Which pretty much the only other people around that level was andyf) 345bhp was about right in a light car on a dry day.
Hindsight now I would say a well set up 400bhp and 400lbft with a nicely shaped flat grap is the way to go..
My car (old one actually) made more power at 3000 rpm than a std impreza, and bear in mind it hasnt come on boost at that point!
When they do come on boost you Need to hang on.. I put no effort into driving my mondeo, but You need 110% with a 600bhp car. To be fair steven's driving doesnt bother me, other road users do!!
My main problem is that circa 600bhp just wasnt enough!! My knees were no longer shaking when I got out of the car..
so:
Would I recommend it to anyone?
No, its pointless, over 500 is wasted on the road. Fine in a race car, not in a road car.

My knees are quivering at the thought of someday driving your car with that turbo on
I nearly did that in my 2nd scoob, at that tought me a valuable lesson, respect the car AND the road!
That also can sum it up, dropping your concentration from 95% to 90% in a 350bhp scoob, whilst accelerating flat out, wont cause too much of a problem. Dropping from 110% to 109% could have disastrous affects.
David, wheres them videos you had of someone driving your car on B and C roads?
And i think we'll all lOOk forward to that.

Interesting
Im not a scoob owner but I am impressed! had 2 recent little bouts with Subaru's in my TVR Cerbera. The first with the WR1 on '02 plate. Saw him give a little stick down a duel carriageway... so followed. Caught up (cos he wasnt going all out) and we both shop off the roundabout. He went ahead first (prob 60yds) and wasnt till I was 5500rpm in 3rd that I caught up and overtook. It looked unmodified too - well impressive.
Although more impressive was the one inside the town with loads of long corners! That modified WRX got loads of grip down and slowly overtook and i was left struggling like a plum to keep the rear end from spinning out. It was a game of overtaken on the corner - back up at the straight. Got to say tho that the scoob came out tops. Roads a little wet and too many corners for the Tiv. Fair play! just wish i had 4wd.
Moral of the story... DAM YOU SCOOBIES!

By the sounds of it, you've got a truly awesome car, but at the same time a widow-maker.
On one occasion after i'd had a scare, i drove home along one of my favourite roads at a pretty slow pace, opened the garage door, put the car in and as i was shutting the door, i said to it (sad i know..)
"*you're* either gonna jail me, or kill me".
Never looked at it for 3 weeks, just wasn't interested, before i took it back out again. It just didn't seem like fun anymore, i'd created a monster that was too much for my capabilities on road. I'm slowly getting back to enjoying it the way i'm meant to now, but there's always a niggling doubt in the back of my mind that somethings going to happen.
im still undecided on wether or not to take mine up to those dizzy heights, but since i have all the parts and the engine in place it really seems rude not too
Go for it Steve.
Just remember, you only regret things you didn't do in life.

Alan, its alright, i have said similar things. In fact, after having a bad weekend on cars last week, as i left, i looked at it sat in the barn covered in dust, and said "and you can **** off aswell"
I was a very cautious individual untill my potential widowmaking incident (still am a little cautious), my view on life changed, to if you fancy having a go at something, go for it. I havent regretted anything i have done since.
