Nope the Rs would have had a superior power to weight ratio and less transmission losses. In the lower gears traction is an issue but once on the move in the higher gears that becomes irrelevant.

But if you get a good launch in the p1, say through 1st, 2nd, 3rd gear the scooby would have left the ESCORT for dead, but once the ESCORT gets going it probably wont be until approx 140mph till it catches up and passes.
How often is that gonna happen.
