To cover the first aspect that started this thread, I can't say that I have ever had any issues with TTs. In fact I think of the vast numbers of them that I have come across whilst driving have never been driven to anywhere near their performance potential. The only one I have had a bit of fun with was one of the V6 ones, I believe if was the special edition released just near the end of the previous TTs run. On some very nice cross county roads going to Nancy some french bloke did a good job keeping up whilst I was driving an '01 2.7 standard boxster, although he did seem to fall back when going through the gears from 3rd to 5th to about 150mph.

With regard to a comparison with a TT I can only give a view based on my experience with my current '05 standard WRX and an S3 that I owned (the 225bhp version). I would certainly say that the WRX feels faster, but as Torpid pointed out this could well be more to do with the way in which the power is delivered. However handling wise the WRX wins hands down. Although the ride is a little harsher in the WRX you can carry a lot more speed through a bend as opposed to the Audi where the haldex system seemed to work against you at times.

Finally onto M3s. I can say that having owned and used daily an E46 M3 for about 2 and a half years they are a very quick car, definately quicker than any Impreza I have driven. I had mine remapped by DMS automotive after about a year which got rid of the top speed limiter and gave it about an extra 29bhp on the top end (allegedly). The problem with the M3 was never its straight line speed but its ride and handling. On bumpy back roads the M3 was too stifly sprung to be able to fully apply its power - so much so that on the same road the boxster was quicker A to B. Unfortunately I have yet to find the time to drive the same bit of road in the WRX but I am pretty sure that with its 4wd it will put in an even better performance. As for standing starts they were certainly easier in the M3 assuming that the road was dry but with a bit of practice a quick start in the WRX is possible without cooking the clutch and far easier in the damp.

I think that ultimately you could argue about whos car is better until the petrol runs out but really each has their own merits and downsides - there is always some compromise. All it comes down to is personal preference.

A good post - very spirited ! You've covered all the issues, largely through your experiences. Still, I expect someone will come along now and nitpick what you've had to say !

Apart from my own postings 'Surgical Spirit' is the only person commenting thus far able to make any meaningful comparison.

He's hit the nail on the head regarding E46 M3's handling- they just aren't set up for the kind of rough, poorly surfaced surfaces one might encounter on the average UK road.

Nice and easy to launch to respectable times in the dry though, without having to rev the thing to 5K.................

TT drivers, they are a**holes, I had this, the tit was driving so close to my a**, we are talking rush hour traffic I couldnt go any faster than the person in front, but as soon as I left a gap (for my breaking distance purposes) the F**ker had to overtake pull in and slam his breaks on causing me to do the same, they are such sh*ts, and at the end of the day I have nothing to prove but these guys must have because it sounds like all audi TT drivers a w**kers. Ok rant over with.

Had a 225bhp Audi TT a few years ago after getting rid of my classic scooby, Had the car for a couple of weeks and paid quite a bit of money for it before realising I made a big mistake and sold it.

Even though the car had 225bhp it struggled to keep up with my mates standard 106 GTi. Would hate to think what the 180bhp version and 150bhp version would be like to drive.

Anyway, it's all relative, I'd say to scoobs, stop trying to race me in my westie, I aint gonna bother, I'd **** over you, besides I've got bigger fish to fry.

Going back to the original point of this thread. I fully understand what you mean about people having to drive like idiots to pass you. Had the same happen to me last night so posted about it on here and on Ford Focus forum as silly driver was in a Focus with website address on back window in huge lettering. I've been slated for doing it and accused of trolling etc. Just can not understand that when people see an Impreza they feel the need to remove brain and pass regardless of safety of those around them. In this area I've found that most TT drivers have respect for other road users and drive in a sensible manner.

you're quite right! You really do not need to spend as much as 7 grand! I know, because I didn't.

So this week its the turn of the TT drivers to be tossers, car is crap etc etc etc.
Makes a change from Volvos, BMW's(although they are getting involved here), Mercedes etc.
Owned 3 Scoobs - loved them.
Owned a 328i BMW - loved it.
Owned Volvos - excellent
Owned 1 Merc - was an A class (wifes honest) so no comment.
Get over the fact some cars perform differently to others - not better - different. Before people criticise other cars, drive them and then you can comment. I found the BMW to be a much better car to drive in the wet or dry than the Scoob once I'd learned to control it. The Scoob gave me more of a thrill with its raw power especially my 97 PPP Classic.
Horses for courses. There are ***** driving all kinds of cars out there. Not including me of course.

You should get a job at 'evo' mate as you are clearly so good at it - maybe you can give them lessons on throttle modulation as they must be a bit cack footed driving all that exotica day in and day out

I agree with your comment about the E46 an excellent car point to point even in the home ground of the Subaru - the twisties. Although I found the M3 to be no faster than the 330 in the real world. But there again Morbid doesn't actually have a M3 despite his prostestations

I haven't made any protestations regarding the M3. Neither have I ever claimed I've owned one.
I have though driven an E46 M3 for numerous miles.

As for a 330i being as quick as an M3 in the 'real world', you just lost what little credibility you once possessed. It isn't.
