The JDM's have the same FUEL issues as the classic imports, but not the same PROBLEMS. I have an unmapped JDM STi 03 which runs perfectly on V-Power and Tesco 99, and Tony Burns on here owns an unmapped Spec C, and I'm sure there are many more, not necessarily Scoobynet members. ECU's of the 21st century have to be designed with wide parameters, to allow for slightly lower or higher octane fuel. I will eventually get mine professionally remapped, with a comprehensive warranty, to run on UK fuel, not because of fear that I may have engine problems, which I am confident I won't have, but purely because the JDM ecu is specifically mapped for higher octane Japanese fuel.
