No chance, did you see the video from one of the US conveys getting set upon and just killing drivers left right and centre - very very scary. No money is worth dying for, at least if you are still alive you can earn more.

Then he would go to Iraq for around 16 weeks at a time, (thats what his contract is for).
He is expecting around £10,000 per week in payment for this.
He is hoping to do a few of these contracts and then start training to be a commercial pilot with his savings.
My wife and his wife are terrified that this is just too dangerous, what do you think, would £10k per week justify this risk as it will tranform their lives whatever happens.

I drive around in ROmford every night for free, so 10k a week to drive in Iraq, where do i sign up

When you consider what an army private driving a DROPS laden with 80 Tonnes of munitions to the front line is getting, £10K per week is very good money, especially as most of that will spent getting to and from Iraq and very little of it actually in the danger zone. Damn, almost tempted myself, think my Hazmat is still valid

pick up an AK, a vest or 3, helmet and some grenades (available at your local corner shop in Iraq)

10k a week is a lot of money- but christ that first video is scary.

Body armour wont keep a 7.62x39 round out! You need an added (ceramic ideally) plate to do that and it only covers your middle. If youre wounded at all youre f*cked.....

An AK is no use in close combat, and cannot be fired single handed (I assume you'll be driving during 'contact') and only as a last resort should you even attempt to engage them, grenades are another no-no, chances are you'll blow yourself up in the vehicle cab, drop it out of your window and blow your own wheels off and either way end up blocking your mates escape route in the vehicle behind you.

Helmet, body armour (as much as you can afford) and a couple of Glocks (with lots of ammo already loaded into spare clips) emergency med pack and an emergency radio

Don't do it. I have been out a few times, and you **** your pants with body armour, ceramic, helmet, and an automatic rifle with a genade launcher. I also wouldn't go anywhere where I had to rely on Yanks for protection. What a bunch of *****.

It would appear that the guy in the first video recieved as much help from the Lord Jesus as he got from the gun truck.
I bet he was chuffed with his £10k per week..............

From your initial post I presume he's asked opinions on whether he should go or not...if you said yeah, go for it, and he got killed, could your consience live with it

Similarly, if he went and got killed and you didn't talk him out of it, could you live with your consience ?

I definately wouldn't risk my *** out there, no matter how much £ ws involved...

All IMHO of course

"The generic definition of a mercenary is a soldier who fights or engages in warfare primarily for private gain, usually with little regard for ideological, national, or political considerations." (from Wikipedia)

For ten grand a week you could maybe turn blind eye to a lot of things, but you'd be haunted for life.

Richard.

Has he got a family?
Has he come to termswith his own death in his mind?

If he is happy with the above...

Its a gamble. Do a few tours and you can get big bucks.
The big questions he needs to answer are.
What level of protection does he get?
Who is providing this protection - what is their track record?
Where will he be working - is it a known hot spot or a quiter area?
Also can he back out mid tour?

This is what the FCO says about travelling to Iraq.

Bottom line:

"We advise against all but essential travel to the rest of Iraq."

I don't think that popping over there to make a quick buck would be considered essential travel.

As mentioned by others, don't forget about Ken "fooking moron" Bigley. He was offered protection but declined it, was told repeatedly to leave, but did not. Was a greedy fool who paid the ulitmate price with his life. This should be lesson enough to your friend.

In that KBR Vid - Thats a fairly nasty choke point they are being lead through.
If he can find out also what type of routes he is taking. Are they full of these type of choke points? If so -then stay clear. It may be that the guys in the video had no choice?

If you watch the extended one with the interviews, you will see that actually happened because the convoy took a wrong turn into a dead end. Footage shows the trucks having to turn round, then drive back through the hot zone- which of course the iraqis knew they would have to do as they knew it was a dead end when they originally drove past them.
They blew up one of the trucks towards the front, which then caused the convoy to stop.
The truck which it is being filmed from was then hit by an RPG and immobilised

here it is: YouTube - Hell on earth
