1080p for DVD is not far off and for Home Cinema I watch DVD's. If it was a distant vision most TV Manufactures would not be selling and advertising them already. In 12 months I doubt 720P TV's will still be sold.

LCD tv's will certainly produce blurring of moving objects on the screen. The reason is that LCD response time to changing the picture detail as it moves is not yet as fast as necessary to get over this. Computer monitors are getting faster in this respect but maybe tv sets are not keeping up so far. Some tv's may be better than others depending on the screen quality.

An HD picture will be just as badly affected in this respect since it is not the transmitted picture but the capabilities of the receiver's screen which cause the problem.

A CRT or plasma screen does not suffer from this so the picture will remain sharp for moving objects.

I've yet to see an LCD TV or Monitor that performs as well as a high quality CRT TV or monitor.

As for "can't afford it", what tosh Jacko

I spent £300 on an LCD Samsung monitor, and it just can't match my Iiyama CRT so it was thrown back. Similarly I have maybe £2k to spend on a new TV (including a 360 ), but the LCD stuff i've seen just isn't anywhere near as sharp as our Panasonic CRT screen, in fact i've never seen a CRT as sharp as our Panny as yet

And i'm not just on about viewing LCD TV's in Currys etc, this is viewing ones that mates have bought etc.

LCDs and Plasmas are simply not good enough for standard signals .. end of.

People buy because they buy the hype - their eyes MUST tell them that the picture is ****e!

No Peter, current broadcast television isnt of a high enough resolution (or bandwidth) for large screen LCD and gas plasma displays. CRT displays arent better; their inadequacies mask the shortcomings of current broadcast television.

Obviously, Im talking about decent scrrens, not the cheap pikey rubbish that youve been looking at.....

My relatively new 28" Hitachi CRT makes BBC3 look better, because it masks the shortcomings of a low datarate DVB channel. My decent 40" LCD, when used with an upscaling DVD source, looks so much better than the CRT its untrue.

I bought an LCD because I could hang it on the wall - try doing that with a 32" CRT.

Our lounge has 3 sofas in a horse shoe shape with the TV at the open end - but I get your point.

lol no mate its called common sense. I could have gone out and bought one of the first plasma TV's out for like 5 grand, yet now you can get ones that are nearly twice as good for 2 grand. You tellin me wasting 3 grand cause I couldnt wait a year is clever?

Like I said theres a reason why the wealthy stay wealthy, and the poor stay poor.

I've got one of those Sony Bravia LCDs - for things shot in film/high def like planet earth it is a beautiful picture, even on non HD channels through Sky. For the footy it's definitely not as good as the old Sony Trinitron CRT that we had. The up close shots are fine but when, say, the goalie launches the ball and the camera tracks across the whole stadium then there is loads of blurring in the background. Strangely your eyes/ brain seem to get used to it after the first few days, so i now only notice it just after I've switched on or if I look for it.

Sky HD arrives this Friday so i'll report back.

will be interesting to know because i watch loads of football and won't be getting it if it's ****. I don't think the quality is that great at the moment for live sport.

Analogue or digital picture? With my 40" it would appear that most of the smudge is actually caused by the artifact/macro-block effect (from the MPEG2 digital picture) and, so, only evident when watching DVB transmissions: if you switch to analogue it mostly disappears... This is less of an issue with the high bandwidth channels like BBC1 and ITV; but a game on ITV2 will be far harder to watch. Itd be less noticable on a CRT, because the weaknesses of interlaced CRTs and those of low bandwidth DVB cancel each other out to a large degree (do you understand that Pete?; you dont do you?); they also tend to be smaller (when you screen is 'twice' as big then the flaws are 4x as easy to see; I bet that you dont get that either do you Pete?)..........

Digital via SKY. Never really bothered to sort out the analogue side as the pre existing SKY was pretty much plug and play.

Like I say - definitely not as good for fast sports as my old Sony CRT via the same SKY box, but I've got used to the odd occasional background effect/blocking and it doesn't really bother me anymore. Generally happy with it as the newer films, higher quality programmes are really luminous and almost 3D in effect.

Looking forward to Friday and high def though

When theres a match on analogue broadcast try switching between the two sources; when you do that you can see how much of it is really down to the LCDs latency...

HD on my KDL40W is superb btw.

Agree 100%.

There is also a marked difference in bit rate between sky and freeview on some channels.
From memory isn't freeview a fixed bit rate but sky jiggles the bitrate depending on channel content?
In my experience sky does a far better job.

My Sony Bravia does suffer slight smearing on low bitrate channels but is awesome with SD high bitrate programs like Planet Earth and Natural World. Play an upscaled DVD and there is no smearing at all. This would indeed suggest it's artifacts or macro blocking on the low bitrate channels rather than a problem with the sets refresh rate. I've not gone Sky HD yet as I consider Sky's current pricing too high.
The best 32" CRT sets are very good with standard PAL low bit rate broadcast, it's what they were designed for but blow that picture up to 50" and display it at a far higher resolution and some of the current broadcasting would be left looking less than perfect.

Cheers
Lee

Early adopters pay more.... you're hardly a rocket scientist for pointing out the obvious. If you never buy anything then you won't lose a pile on depreciation.... wow what a shocker.

There is ALWAYS something better around the corner. The "boring life" dig was not particularly aimed at TV's, but more the concept of never daring to do anything as there will be something better along tomorrow.

I'm still sufficiently wealthy after spending a few pounds on my TV so don't feel too sorry for me

I'll buy into HD once prices have stabilised. Im not missing out on anything anyway cause only some sky channels are HD. Not worth the money in my opinion. Rather spend it on track days/karting.

If it is well made GrahamG, that will probably be as good a picture as you will get.

We were lucky enough to find one in stock at a not so local woolies.

At £399 you cant really say no, peeled off the hideous TECHNOSONIC badges from the TV and remote (thomson underneath).

Great TV, not a good picturewise as our old 32" 100hz CRT but for XBOX360, its awesome!!!

Highly recommended, if you can find one!
