The only way to get the full benefit of your LCD is to get SKY HD. It gives a much better picture on non HD channels and a stunning one on the HD channels.
If you ain't getting SKY HD then you won't get the full benefit of your LCD / Plasma...........so there

Its all kind of irrelevant anyway, like it or not LCD and HD is here to stay, ten years from now you won't see any CRT's, you won't be able to buy one and they won't be broadcasting for them anyway at some point. I personally wouldnt replace a working CRT telly just for the sake of it but lso I wouldnt buy a new CRT unless it was very cheap.

LCD is what we have been waiting for technology to provide, a perfectly flat tv that isnt two feet deep and can be had in pretty much any size rather than topping out at 32 inches, CRT is basically a pretty ropey technology that has been refined for many years, lcd's have been around what 5 years, what will they be like in ten years ?.The internal combustion engine is like CRT tech, been refined for a long time until its pretty good but really needs somehing new to replace it.

As for my afford comment, I know someone who got all funny when I got an LCD and started saying how his CRT was so much better yadda yadda yadda, mainly cos there is no way he could afford a new one, I am not bothered either way just some get the green monster when you get something new, J4CKO's mate knows who I am on about.

I do see how CRT can be better, I do prefer my CRT monitor but unfortunately Ikea desks dont like one, never mind two 19 inch CRT's, so on balance its LCD every time, not spending more on furniture so I can use a cheaper monitor !

I've got a 3yr old Philips 32" CRT with pixel plus. I've got the space, so the fact it is as big as a fridge put on its side doesn't matter. A mate of mine has got a recent LCD ambilight model in the same size and I have to say the CRT is close but not quite as good from a dvd source. Probably down to his better version of PixelPlus.

Personally I'll be waiting a couple of years more and will pick up a proper 1920x1080 HD tv (none of this "hd ready" rubbish) and a HD or BluRay DVD player at the same time for less than half of the price they are now.

LCD Panels are remarkably cheap to make .... as opposed to a Plasma Panel - due simply to the scrap rate. There are many more Plasmas scrapped than LCDs .... therefore each LCD Panel can be sold a LOT cheaper.

BUT, the manufacturers are aware that the market is 'used' to paying £1000+ for a big Plasma Screen ... so, thats where the LCD price point is - for the moment.

Once the competition gets underway the LCD panels will have a RRP of 1/2 of what they do now .............. give it 8 months.

Interesting what you say about picture quality differences between satellite and terrestrial analogue signals Hail Hail. I get an excellent analogue signal here because I can see the mast from my home. The analogue signal is better quality than my Sky one of the same channel. I think it is because of the more restricted bandwidth on satellite signals.

I don't actually use an analogue signal at all, I meant the difference in quality between normal Sky channels on a Sky+ box and a Sky HD box
