As for the TA. There is kind of a need for a home guard service these days because we are having our coastline invaded from the ground daily by illegal immigrants. However that's customers and immigrations job to police.
As for sending these guys to Iraq a year at a time it wont work. Disband the TA, give those in it free Paint Ball Club Memberships and spend more money building the profile, recruitment and retention figures of our full time serving army/navy/airforce with a few quid extra to make sure they get vehicles that can withstand roadside bombs and other protective equipment...

Why can't the TA be used for homland security? I am a serving soldier, and I am fed up with coming back to the UK for some emergency or other. Foot and Mouth? Thousands of regulars used. Fire strikes - Regulars again. Heathrow airport alert? Regulars.
I am not saying that help is not required on Op's, and the TA have a major part to play at the moment. What needs to be highlighted is that no matter what the top brass say, the regulars are overstretched. Our commitments need to be smaller. ie Afganistan OR Iraq. Balkans OR Cyprus (I vote Cyprus).
If the tour interval was longer, family life wouldn't suffer and people would stay in. (By the way, for a 6 month tour, you can expect to be training for the entire year before, with an average of 3 months away on exercise.)
On a personal note, I have been to the middle east, in one capacity or the other, every year for the last 7.

Good for you mate
Jerome, I think its admirable that you serve your country
Knowing a few full time soldiers in various regiments and also some in the TA including a senior officer I know the risks you put yourself through
To the people who are berating Jerome on this thread and making snidey little remarks, you are the cowards all sat behind your keyboards flexing your spacebar enhanced biceps. Give the bloke a break. People like him should get medals
Just because you are in the TA it does not mean you are any less brave than some of the full time soldiers and invariably if it was something you really wanted to do but can earn more money on civvy street then clearly this is a better option.
I personally hold people like you in very high regard. Hats off

Jerome,
I remember how concerned for your safety we all were when you were sent out to the Iraqi war and how relieved we were when you returned.
It is very easy for these critics to sit fat, dumb, and happy behind their keyboards to attack you in the way they have on this thread. As you said I wonder how many of them would have the guts to do what you have done. I think they are trying to justify their own acceptance of someone else risking his life on theirr behalf to themselves and others.
You were sent out to an illegal war on the lie that there were weapons of mass destruction and our troops were not even properly equipped with NBC kit to protect themselves in the case of chemical or biological attack. What kind of government is prepared to do something like that for its own selfish reasons?
I do not see why our troops should be unilaterally deployed overseas as policemen and labourers in reconstruction in grossly dangerous circumstances when our country is not being personally threatened by the situation at the time.
I agree with what you say and that is with the experience of a long career in the armed forces.
Les

Les,
Thanks for your kind words. I'd forgotten about that thread. Methinks I'll dig it out for posterity and to remind myself there are (or at least were) many supportive SN members.
jasey,
If there were one for drinking, I'd have several bars on it by now!
The others I have the Territorial Decoration for long service and the Golden Jubilee medal. The proper one is the Iraq War medal.

My brother-in-law was an officer in the TA back in the late 80's. Happy to have the **** up parties and take all the cash and bounties he could.
Right up to the point a few years later when they wanted to send them to Iraq for the first conflict - he shat it, big time. Same as you. Came up with every excuse under the sun and didn't go.
The ones that did go, which was the majority, branded him a coward when they got back and had no respect for him. He decided to quit after that.
I still call him a coward. Happy to play soldiers until the real stuff begins.
I'm honest enough to say I wouldn't want to go either, but clever enough not to have signed up in the first place.
Go or Resign, that's your choice.

Have you actually read any of my posts, or are you hard of thinking?
I didn't **** myself when I got called up. I did not try and get out of it in any way whatsover. I also turned down the chance of being excused by my employer appealing.
I am also NOT complaining about being called up every now and then. I AM complaining about the idea of automatically being called up for a year every 4 years.
I don't want this rule to come in because I think it will kill the TA off. I want to stay in the TA, even if I have to do more operational tours.
If this is all to hard for you to understand, then find yourself a copy of the Daily Sport and look at the pictures. You sound like a bit of an onanist to me, so this should suit you.

Bored at work and looking for a conversation to kill time. I have only quickly read the previous posts.
But with the regular army in such a state what else can the defence chiefs do?
They probably want more money, better kit and better conditions for the soldiers which the politicians won’t give them.
So they have to resort to using the TA for man power.
I think as well in 2008 to cut yet more costs the regs will be post to just one place. Probably better for families but not those posted to **** holes.
I can’t imagine this helping recruitment.
Come 2015 if we haven’t been invaded will probably have a united European army.

That's probably what the Army chiefs are wanting.
The problem is that it will stop the people from joining the TA - The army wont have enough people and we'll have to stop invading countries with Oil.
What sort of a state is that to be in

Good grief. Another moron with a penchant for self abuse.
I assure you I'm no keyboard warrior. I would also bet that you wouldn't say what you just said to my face. Who's the keyboard warrior now?

Those who think the members of the TA should just get on with it and accept guranteed full time service for one year in every five, let's take it a little further...
What would your opinion be if that proposal was extended beyond the TA to all eligible adults?
You say the TA soldiers have signed up for potential service, and should just accept the proposed change without whinging... What if the law was changed so that all UK citizens were obliged to serve in the forces?
National service, conscription, call it what you like. You've "signed up" as a UK citizen (either by being born here or taking citizenship) now everyone between 16/18 and 35 has to serve one year in every five and go do his bit for Queen, Country, and President Tony.
As a UK citizen, would you just "get on with it" and go to war? After all, if you don't like it, you could always leave the country...
John.

Jerome,
Respect to you for going when called up. That's how it should be. Was in the TA between Gulf Wars so wasn't called up, but certainly would have gone if I had been, as you did. That's what we signed for. Clearly people aren't reading the entire thread when they come out with utter bollox suggesting that you're a coward ~ you're nothing of the sort !
So are the Govt saying one tour that lasts a year every 5 years, or simply that you have to have toured a total of 1 year for every 5 years TA service ?
