I've been on a million Diversity courses and officially you cannot use the phase Chinky, Northern Monkey, Jap, Yid, or even Yank!!!!! These are no no's these days and using them in public has led to issues?

BTW, I don't agree with the above BUT it's all personel choice... I personally wouldn't use the phrase chinky or refer to an asian friend as a Paki? But that's just me.....

I always refer the the story about the women that was sacked for calling a man Petal in a meeting. The man didn't take offence, another woman did.

Getting a little serious, you raise some great points.

When I was based in Germany, I worked closely with both the Dutch & German Airforce. They called us 'Brits' and we called the Dutch guys 'cloggies'. This caused some discussion as they initially felt it was a derogatory term. But after we told them it was a term of endearment and friendly banter, they were more than happy and called themselves it..

The Germans were called German or 'Lufties' (shortened Luftwaffe) as we felt that Kraut was a little too close to the old Wartime nickname and therefore would be seen as derogatory. Speaking to some good German mates, they did feel this would be the case.

So, I feel it's all down to how it's used TOWARDS someone.

I'm a Brummie and you're a Manc(?); This in some cases can be as bad as Paki if I or you didn't like the term. if this was the case, then people here wouldn't use it.

The word Chinky is not a specific derogatory term like Paki has become, and was not used in a derogatory way TOWARDS Chinese people or swtmerce, so should be taken as as open and general term or colloquialism for a Chinese restaurant. If he doesn't like the term then say so, we can respect that. But he/she should respect Dave or any persons right to say it as it can be classed as benign. If Dave had used the N word, then that is probably the best example of an unacceptable term (even though it's becoming blurred with black people using it towards each other), and Dave would have been rightly open to the backlash that swt gave.

PC people are trying to use a ruler to divide what can and can't be said and that is wrong and is the main cause of frustration as you have to watch everything you say to a much to finer point. Such words should be looked at in context and not taken as a standalone term..

As I said.... I don't think any disrespect was meant by Dave or anyone...

I think the key point is the one you made about different peoples opinions.... i.e. if someone uses a term and someone complains (in a calm way) then the person using that term should respect that ......

BTW interesting points on working in Germany.... I work in the week in Germany and have to be careful when talking about certain things.... "don't mention the war" but was at a dinner last night with Germans and English and we started talking about WW1 and how basically some of the battles were a pointless waste of both nationalities people....

Anyway... that's far to deep for this time of day!!!!!
