Thanks. I did try to read it all but I realised about half way through that the people already knew what the Reputation System was.

It might have been helpful for the powers that be to have posted an informative thread.

Indeed. Until then we'll have to put up with my attempt at it

But then they would have been admitting to the creation of this system in all it's 'glory' and indirectly acknowleging the likely ramifications from the outset.

Better to introduce the idea, in part, under the guise of 'helping to deal with trolls' before the majority become aware of it's sinister nature and implications for the non-elite user.

Do you happen to believe that TopGear has been axed? Odd question on this thread I know, but your comments about the "elite" users and so forth make you sound like unclebuck, perhaps you're related

UB has articulated his view on this issue very well, as usual. I can't deny that my own opinion bears a resemblance.

Within a matter of hours of this being introduced I made the mistake of voicing my thoughts on a particular 'big post' counter with instant weight to throw around as far as reputation power go - this was on topic for the thread in question.

For that one comment I received a barrage of negative rep points, purely for crossing this one 'super', 'elite' or whatever user.

Since then I have also been the victim of a prank and recieved more negative rep points with comments completely unjustifiably. Is this adding to my enjoyment of SN? No. I doubt I am alone as apparently several other users have already gone.

I just don't see how this is such a good thing personally and if I hadn't got some positive reputation points, which thankfully out weigh the negative ones, I might well have been banned from the site without any good reason.

Is this true? Not myself, I hope? We have no quarrel, Ben, as far as I'm aware.

Ben,

what is your paranoia?

When it started up I also had a shed load of puerile negative rep points as well. Since half of the attempts were grey they were clearly from people with less than around 1000 posts (the threshold as far as I can tell). Not such a huge post count?

I don't think there is any conspiracy and as far as I can see no particular 'clique'.

Yes - multiple negative reputation points all in rapid succession, some even telling me I had made a big mistake crossing this user or otherwise eluding as to why I was getting them. More than enough to make me think I could end up banned with the ultimatum of either to not do it again or "disappear".

No quarrel at all Bubba.

Well, check your rep - given BEFORE this revelation, I might add.

I'll say it again; it will take a lot of provocation for me to give negative reputation, and I won't thank anyone who gives it on my behalf.

Yes I saw you had given me some positive reputation - for what it's worth thanks.

Two new negative repuation points for that post on this page though and this illustrates the problem... get targetted for what exactly?

If someone disagrees with you then they should post on the thread, not add insulting comments beyond moderation for you to discover in your 'User CP'. As I said, where is the enjoyment in that, and I haven't seen any of this deal with those users who really do go out of their way to get peoples backs up - and wasn't that what it was being introduced for?

So what are we left with... trolls who spoil threads and annoy people that way combined with those who enjoy giving out negative reputation points with insulting comments to any user who sticks their head up above the paropit.

Anyway, the poll shows that most people don't want it. Best leave it at that, as I am not looking for any sympathy etc, just illustrating that this is a flawed system that will be abused no end.

I think we need to wait for the novelty of the system to wear off and settle down. For three days after its introduction I got blizzards of red reps mixed in with the positives. The reds have petered out to hardly any, now.

There is a clique, Rannoch. There are people on here for whom I and many others couldn't give a monkey's minge for and yet they have accrued a quite staggering 50+ of your Great British reputatory marks. The fact that they are grossly over weight is entirely irrelevant.

You LIKE muppets, JT, esp. during the day. We're just spreading the luff around because we actually like each other.

Maybe that was more my point.

I could only be envious of a clique if I wanted to be in it and as Marx said - I would never want to join a club that would have me as a member!

Only if the base is memory foam and the top pillow is the neck down of a snow goose.

Hmmm - does that sound a bit gay?
