There all no more iconic than ironic than gin and tonic, but as I had to choose one I went for the king of the Bi-Polar kneecaps himself, Sir Stephen Fry...
I think he is funny and his nose is crooked...

Actually the original poll claims it is the Greatest Living British Icon, but all the candidates are English, hence the parenthetic query in my original post.
Some interesting comments about this - are we confusing greatest living icon with greatest living Briton or Englishman - I suspect the two are very different although the list offered does have some crossover such as David Attenborough.

Do you have to be cultured to be an icon
I need to look with respect at someone for them to be in the category of *icon* Values and principles etc....and maybe Branson doesn't have these qualities although in my mind I maybe see the good in him.
edited to say I didn't click on the link on your first post, Rannoch, so didn't know it was the Culture show

I think he is so well known all around the world and is such a classical old school English stereotype.
Eccentric, famous but modest, passionate about what he does. His programmes are shown pretty much everywhere even if he does not appear on them now as he on Life on Earth. They are some of the best nature programmes in the world, if not the best.

I think David Beckham is a great role model. All that he has acheived is through hard work and application something which should be admired. He has only average talent as a footballer but through dedication and hard work he has become England captain and got over 90 caps. He is also very family oriented and loves his kids, doesn't take drugs or make a fool out of himself getting wasted.I think most parents would be proud if he was their son,i know i would.
I'd also vote for Keith Richards over Jagger any day. Keith doesn't feel the need to still prove himself getting off with women half his age, unlike that twit Jagger. Keith Richards is a national institution and long may he reign.
My final vote would be for Norman Foster, the architect.

Kate Moss is a druggie who spends her time with and screws another druggie.
Both of them are a complete waste of the air that enters their lungs. She "Loves" this guy who injected class A drugs into an unconscious young girl.
Can someone please explain to me how can she be an icon for anyone who isn't a crackhead themselves?
They shouldn't even be walking the streets IMO.
Cheers

Kate Moss is an iconic British fashion model, she looks fantastic and has amazing versatility in her looks. Probably the best Britain has produced. An extremely large number of luxury brands use her.

David Beckham has lost his iconic status IMO. when he was at MUFC he was huge but since going to Real Madrid he's gone downhill.
The worlds biggest icon is Tiger Woods

I think your right Rannoch but by the time Tiger is his age he will have passed him by some margin. Right now there is nobody in the same league as him globally. His popularity on every continent is obscene
