What do you know besides reading what others post?...get a six cylinder one and then come talk about it .... ive had both e30 and e36(24v) on a 320 the E30 would **** all over it...none of these were un der powered and did on average 30-35mpg wich is more than what I could say to the 1.6 brand new focus Ive also had a 318 manual and auto...if it hasnt got a 6 cylinder engine its simply not a bmw for me...sorry!

hi , thanks spirit for the alfa tip , bit i cant find any anywhere near me.
I went today to look at an BMW 318ti Auto , it was a really neat looking car and I am tempted , but on further inspection 19mpg town driving ? which is hardly any better than the 17mpg I am getting from the scoob. SO i am back to square one , we were going to look at an A3 aswell but that only quotes 21mpg. I am now considering a diesel ( maybe bmw still ) and have seen a 325td but the reviews say its costly >? its a blinkin minefield out there..

I used to own an E46 shape 318i coupe and it was alright, it was a four pot but it was one of the late 2.0 valvetronic engines so it was reasonably paced. If you're going for an E36, opt for a 6 pot, the 4 pots tend to be hammered and IMHO I wouldn't go near a compact fullstop, they're just ****e. Opt for the coupe all the way if you can stretch to it...

In my opinion the best option is an E36 shape 323i, they're a 2.5 six cylinder but before you worry about fuel they're better than you expect. They're about 31/32 combined from memory (only 2 or 3 less than the 316/318 models at book figures but much much nicer to drive and in a real world the 323i's give more realistic fuel returns with how should I put it... spirited driving )

The 323i superceded the 320i in the E36 shape so they were available from '95 to '99, deffo the best option, good luck

It's nothing to do with what others have posted, as said take a look on e36coupe.com and get some proper advice from those that know what they are on about instead of listening to people like yourself who are up there own ***** !

I have been a member on the site for some years.

As for ownership yes I had a 318is which was modified, perhaps I should of mentioned that.

I have also driven all variants of the M3 E30, E36 AND E46 the E30 is by far the most focused car and it was also a 4 cylinder, obviously though that's not a proper BMW according to you

Oh dear this site has certainly taken a dive.

bmw r really nice to drive, u can feel the build quality of the car,imo the nicest cars ive ever driven (except the supra TT ), ive had 2 now, the 1st one was a 318is with 19" and lowered and was still a very smooth ride but it was too juisy on petrol and i found it to be near the same as the 328i i drive now WHICH IS FOR SALE , if u can i would go for the 328i sport, as the m3 u have major issues with the vanos unit, but with the 328i all u have to worry about is the naskil check, they have all the goodies, sport suspension witch is a lovely smooth ride, good torque range and the engines are bullet proof and a well looked after one ( which mine is) will see 200k with no trouble

He means Nikasil, It's to do with the liners used for the cylinder pots, if you get yourself a 328 make sure it was recalled and corrected, or you could end up with a dead engine.

A couple of my old 318is, as said it was well modified, engine, brakes and suspension and complete
with a one off white custom made leather interior !!

If you can cope with the difference in power and is more styling you are looking for, looks wise ( as I mentioned before I am not mechanically minded on the BMW ) the coupes look IMO

My old one ( that new owner kindly wrote off )

A3/A4 is certainly worth a looking as an alternative to an E36 3-series.

The BM will no doubt be a better drive, but the E36 looks extremely dated now - especially the interior which is completely 80's (I guess it was designed in the 80's!)

imo i dont think the e36 looks dated at all, if u get a nice looked after one then it could happilly stand next to some moddern cars and not look out dated, but the interior cant be any worse design than jap i.e scoob, skyline coz that wasnt there strongest point.
