You live and learn dont you?
The 1707 act of union. (Percy Pedant that I am) And the no of MP's is disproprtionate to the population, but not the land area. The number of Scottish MP's was decreased after Devolution. Agreed that HM Govt would be Tory after Scottish Independence.

If I was equally pedantic Id point out that ward boundaries being dictated by population was adopted long after 1707, so my assetion that both population and area were pertinent, was correct.....

Why. I pay for everything on my credit card. Pay the card off every month then Morgan Stanley give me approx £150 every November .

But I do agree with the point you're actually making .

"There will be an inflation rise in fuel duty from midnight"

So bloody what ... you were ALL paying (like me!) ... 100p a litre MINIMUM a few months back in the Summer!!

So, stop complaining that it will be 86p now - the government is going to use the 'extra' tax wisely on your behalf!

Most of you are a bunch of whinging, complaining, girls blouses!!

Fuel should be £2 a litre so we can scrap road tax and road charging.
People can't escape petrol so it really is PAYG.
Helps congestion, unnecessary journeys etc.

It's simple, it'll work BUT the government do not get to track your driving. They won't be able to control you.

Fair enough Simon ...although you did say the Scots have a dispropotionately large number of MPs for ......... their area.

After Devolution in 1997 the number of Scottish MPs was decreased from 72 to 59, the idea being to have consituencies based on the UK average of 67,000. The number of Scottish MPs was only 45 in 1707 but was increased on 3 separate occasions (by the UK parliament ) in the 19th century.

PS how do you quote from two separate posts ?!

If the trains were better there is the danger that you'd use them instead of your car! What would happen to the Govt coffers if we all did that ...

No way should it be £2 a litre - that's madness. The motorist already pays well above and beyond their fair share of tax's so why not raise the revenue elsewhere or better still cut back on public spending.

People rarely make unncessary journeys anymore - congestion is self regulating in that respect. Also I believe the authorities have been manipulating traffic light sequencing such as to cause congestion. These so called traffic calming additions to road have increased congestion also. It is clear to me that a while ago they decided they needed to create more congestion in the city centres and elsewhere to support the latest schemes for raising revenue.

It's just a shame that the population of the UK couldn't all get together and say "**** it" we'll all JUST use public transport for 1 week. The country would grind to a halt, the Government would lose Billions.
It's what they want us to do, isn't it, use public transport. They'd be fcuked if we did.

As for Dracoro's comment of it should be £2 a litre. Please refer to Jonno_johnson's and Ben v7's comment's.
The price of everything would rise beyond belief. If it costs more to transport stock to the supermarkets, the supermarkets are going to claw all that cost back, by charging the customer.

Oh, I agree, my point wasn't to rise to to £2. My point (which I prob didn't make clear) is that if the government is sincere in wanting to reduce congestion efficiently then this would be the best way to do it rather than raod charging, gps monitoring etc.

People like cars, they are warm, comfy, don't have to mix with smelly people etc. So even if public transport were cheap and efficient, they'd still drive.

I suggest having proper cycle lanes in towns to get people pedalling, any journey under 3 miles can be easily cycled, maybe some other incentives to do so. Any journey under 1 mile can be walked too. Pedestrianise ALL town/city centres.

On main roads, build more exit entry ramps on to motorways. Proper slip roads on A roads rather than + junctions etc. Keep traffic moving. Much heavier police presence to stop middle lane drivers who cause most congestion on motorways. Clamp down on bad driving etc. Take the cars away from repeat offenders. i.e. get 6 points and part of the fine is your car removed for a week or a short ban rather than points. People will soon up their standards. get rid of many cameras whilke we're at it.

Anyewy, as I previously said, the govt aren't serious about this, what they are serious about is money and control.

I hear it has been reported that there will be no tax on breathing the air into out lungs-only a carbon tax on the carbon dioxide that we exhale. Don't say that we do not get a choice then.

I see that houses who use zero carbons are to be exempt from taxes!!

By zero carbons it includes houses that use electricity, as long as it generates within the property enough to pay it back to the grid - say overnight.

WELL DONE LABOUR!!

Labour really are destroying this country for short-term gain.

We have an economy based on spending borrowed money - thats sustainable

One guy at work has just moved to Cyprus and another to Oz in the past few weeks - I'll probably join the waves of skilled workers getting out before the ship sinks, but I guess Im still holding onto the tiny bit of hope that things might get turned around before it really is too late...
