what i thought that the subaru link adds 10degrees at crank level and then what we add is on top of that. so for example if you are runing 20degrees at top end then you are running 30 degrees at the crank.

so why does the EVO for example run so much less? i think runs 5 degrees at the crank plus what ever you tune.

and what makes an engine run more or less advance. ?

to make things even more confusing i have had a look at pat's map on the pectel and although he has got the same UK MY99 engine that i have got he is running sti timing around 18s degrees at the top end which i could not run at all even though i had fmic fitted at the time. apart from the huge turbo that he is runing his car has the same engine as mine.

i am sure there is an explanation to every thing but who knows.

Think you're right mark, slightly crossed wires.
My early MY92-96 ecu did not have any base timing, nor did your link afaik. Its clear that there was "supposed" to be as the manual states. I've taken to checking cars out from time to time as I noted that it can vary car to car. Unless you know what it is then you can be misleading yourself (either thinking the car is v good when its not or very bad when its good)in terms of timing numbers. What I have found is that all the later versions of ecu have this base timing but that it varies from 8 to 12 degrees or so which is purely car tolerances and nothing to do with the ecu. You can adjust this point on a motec or Pectel but not a Link, its of no matter as long as you know what it is.

Bob,

Phew, thought I was going nuts. What I'm not certan about, is that you were running very similar ignition on the STi5 with the Motec, and the Link. Does this mean that you set the Motec up to run with the same offset, as the Link, to make comparisons easier.

Mark.

I never optimised the Link in it, it was only in for a few days, Motec was mapped to allow for the top mount, and also, if you recall, I was working on turbo and downpipe issues so kept the map fixed as a static benchmark. Now thats all sorted things are a bit different. I've not bothered to optimise the M48pro for the current setup due to the M800 appearing and I've not got round to that for a variety of reasons which, hopefully, are no longer valid so I have focused on Link as you would expect. Hence the iterations of chip enhancements that are appearing and the somewhat improved performance that can be obtained on some cars fitted with the right mods.
