I don't really see why I am a no hoper.

I have no interest in football, and all I remember about the tit is the complete disgrace he portrayed himself to be over his last few years.

I have no idea why he would be a role model for anyone - I certainly wouldn't want my children looking up to a ***** like that

What a load of crap Sonic. He lived his life his way and certain others in the medical profession decided he should get a liver. I'm sure he paid more in taxes than you'll ever earn and could have bought ten livers if needed. So should an alcoholic yet 'worthy' tramp lying in the gutter have every right to a liver when needed? Who's worthy of a new liver? What's your point here? No footballer is a role model in my book anyhow. Everyone is equal when it comes to dying.

Quite. Oh, and his death was somewhat overshadowed (though not in the media- which says it all about the celebrity scene) by the most untimely passing of a real British sporting hero i.e. Richard Burns.

I do, however, miss Steve Irwin. The world is a poorer place without him IMHO.

So George Best was not a real British sporting hero? Its only because your an Impreza/rally fan that you'd be concerned by the death of RB. Sounds guy and a real shame of his passing, especially at his age but it didnt make him anymore of a british sporting hero than GB IMO.

If you're a football fan he's probably missed. I think it's far more upsetting when someone is taken in their prime though (Senna, Burns etc).

Some people seem to be forgetting that alchaholism is a disease.

There is no question that George was one of the greatest footballers ever. He is regarded by many people in Belfast as a national hero. What ever happened to respect for the dead?

George Best had more chances than many others to beat this disease, from medical help, to family support, to support groups. The endless pellets inserted into his system to make him sick when he drank booze, to the new liver which was wasted on him.



So, I have no respect for him, and he was a ponce. A great footballer ? Really ? he kicked a ball around, so what. How about the many people that saved lives like doctors / nurses, or the people that invented medicines.



Many families with parents with liver cancer would of loved that liver, the chance of life, and if so would of ensured that they looked after it.



Im glad the pr1ck is dead. He should of died earlier and not wasted the huge amount of medical help wasted on him.



Also, what does his son do ? for a job / living ? He's another waste of space.

Erm, forgive me if Im wrong but didnt Besty die from an infection from the replacement liver, something to do with the body not taking to the antibiotics he was taking etc? He didnt actually waste that second chance he had in life from what I recall.

Although to be fair, George gave a vision to the world over what drinking can do to you. Maybe he did do some good to the world over aswell...

Last Friday I attended the funeral of an Octogenarian who had been in the Paras in WW2, had flown in the gliders at the start of D-Day and went on to take Pegasus bridge. He was one of the few left alive from the opperation and was still actively involved with the Paras Association when he died. He was accompanied by 7 or 8 standard bearers through a guard of honor and his coffin was draped with the Union flag. It was possibly one of the most moving events I have ever attended. That old boy commands a thousand times more respect from me that the likes of GB.

OllyK - Now that is a true Britsh hero. Not some ***** like GB. He wasnt English either. His liver infection was due to the endless abuse he gave it, antibotics / booze / etc.

Ive experienced the pain of someone you love with liver cancer, and dying due to there being no livers available. Watching them suffer, as GB is on TV regarding his 19th time of being pissed, abusing his transplant liver.

Nothing to do with football, or his career, but what the man gave up, and took for granted.

Fair point Norman D. Landing, but I think its pretty widely accepted that even if it's an addiction, its still classed as a disease. I guess there are 2 schools of thought on the subject.

I was just trying to make the point that his memory is still respected by alot of people, and that he is missed.

Tell you what pisses me off.....

Ok, so he could play football, big deal..... most of his life, he wasted his talent..... then look what the government does.... names an airport after him, releases money with his face on it etc....

Then take Joey Dunlop, a real gentleman, who, although he enjoyed a drink too, made the most of his talent, right until the time of his death...

He carried out charitable deeds, not for notoriety, but out of the goodness of his heart...

He won multiple World Championships etc, not running round a field after a ball, but risking his life every time he stepped onto a bike, on circuits like the TT, UGP etc.....

And what does he get..... a minute memorial garden, and a leisure centre named after him....

No harm to George Best, but out of the two of them, I know which one I think, is more deserving of praise.....and I think its an absolute disgrace, that all Joey fans worldwide, have allowed his death to be brushed aside in such a slipshod manner!!!

No, not all- I'm not a big rallying fan tbh, but RB was, a WRC champion (first English one?). Did George best ever acheive anything of this magnitude?

Moreover, George Best is more famous for squandering his potential than exploiting it. He was more celebrity than sportsman for most of his "career" and famous for, let's face it, being a bit of a rogue. All fine and dandy, but IMHO a real sportsman is a gentleman and conducts themselves with dignity and with a view to setting an example. What is Best's legacy in this respect?

I don't want to be too down on GB. He entertained a lot with his antics and playing and he was indeed a character, albeit not a role model. At one point he was an outstanding talent too. At the end of the day, each to their own; it's not for me to dictate what position anyone should occupy what position in the celebrity grief stakes; its personal!

I would respectfully suggest that -especially given the kind of society we live in today- we should be putting more "upstanding" sportsmen on pedestals.

As I said above the only celebrity I have really missed for a long time is Steven Irwin: the world is a poorer place without him.

Joey Dunlop ? What about Joey Deacon :-) ? Growing up, he was my Blue Peter hero, or was it his mate Erinie ? I could never understand a word he said, but Erinie could :-)
