For the same reason that all of the controls are marked in English. There isnt one Japanese/Chinese character in your cabin.

I think the only thing this shows is that Subarus are unreliable and needy. What a farce - in the 21st century you can't just put petrol in it and rely on it to just works. What a bunch of mugs we must be.

Although to be fair, there are different winter and summer formulations for all petrols IIRC because of the way different elements evaporate at different temperatures while in storage.

As long as your car isn't modified you should run it on 95 RON fuel, there's alot of rubbish talked on here about needing higher grade fuel. Regarding the sticker in the fuel flap, that does indeed refer to the Japanese market where SUL is 95 RON. My last car was sweet as a nut at 92,000 miles on 95 RON and my current one is on 80,000, never missed a beat and several mechanics have commented on how good the engine sounds.

MY93 wrx ran like **** on v-power so went back to using tescos 99 octane fuel and it ran perfect

 

I was at the petrol station this morning and a guy was putting 40 quids worth of Tesco's normal unleaded in an MY05 STI
I wonder how many others do this maybe not realising the possible outcome.
I must say that having bought two Impreza's not once have i been warned by the salesman about using the correct fuels.
I know it says what to use in the manual but who reads that cover to cover?
Also not every Impreza owner visits this site to find out about all the horrors

uk cars are designed to run on norm unleaded, Sunleaded is just the recomended.

i run mine on v power and the car feels the same as when i ran it on optimax, howver it was mapped on optimax so won't be much difference

 

I didn't realise STI Type UK's ran on normal, thought it was just WRX's.

 

iirc (not got one so only going on what i remember) you can run them ok on norm unleaded unless you have ppp


although super is recomended

 

The topic of fuel is a minefield

 

All i know is i was using Shell until recently when i tried a tank of Tesco 99 as my local station started selling it and i will be sticking to T99 as the Mpg have increased by enough to make it worth while and also the car runs great !!

was it vpower or unleaded you were using?

 

I filled my type RA with V power and had a knock reading of 84!

I drove around off boost till I used most of it up and refilled at same place, knock readings returned to normal - 32ish.

There does seem to be a few bad batches about, I do live in the sticks so maybe it stays in the tanks longer than most busy places.

They (petrol) do seem to have a short shelf life - I have never had reading that high before - rather worrying

Yes, yes, yes...finally lots of other people with bad mpg on V power. I noticed this almost straightaway as my car was mapped on Optimax and has always returned good mpg when not nailing it. Motorways I could easy get 350 miles to tank, now really struggle to get 300 miles in '03 wrx. Use Tesco 99 whenever I can get it.

 

The funny thing is that lots of people claimed they get much worse mileage on Tesco 99 as well...

I'm going to be doing a couple of longer trips over the Christmas period, I'll try V-Power and Tesco 99 and see what happens.

 

I don't want to say I told you so but I posted about V-Power and the problems on standard cars before you even got it in the UK.

I ran mine on V-power here in Germany and the car could not compensate for the 100ron, however it could compensate for the 99ron, therefore 99 ron must be the maximum level that the standard ecu can compensate for.

After that the ecu can not compenstae and starts to play silly buggers.

I spoke to Bob Rawle about this and he told me the car needed mapping to use the 100ron stuff, he mapped the car on 100ron and it solved all my problems, Andy F disputed this claim but there you go who knows better?
my recommendation is to get your car remapped on a mixture of 95 and 100ron then you can take advantage of the full range as normal but also get the benefit of the V-Power when you can get it. This is how mine was mapped as I did not want the car mapped for only 100ron just incase I could not get it for some reason and could use lower octain petrol still.

 

take a few tanks for the ecu to adjustfrom one type of fuel to the other

 

After reading all this about V Power I actually think its been buggering around with my car! Ive changed nothing other than the fuel (Optimax to V Power) and for a while now my car, sometimes doesent react when i use put my foot down. It feels like there is a blocked fuel filter or something along those lines, and it just seem to do nothing onther than judder. then after a couple of seconds it sorts itself out for a while!

Anyone else shed any light on this one for me?

The stickers inside the UK cars fuel caps and JDM fuel caps are totally different, as to be obviously expected. A Type UK (or Euro spec) clearly states inside the fuel cap and in the Subaru Owners Handbook to use 'super unleaded 98 fuel only'.

Me too! I read all the threads about increased mpg on V-Power when it first came out but having run it for a few weeks (MY05 WRX PPP), I now agree with the threads about reduced mpg.

Back to Tesco 99!

 

I've noticed this occaisonally, but only in 5th and only at about 80. I thought it was a slight wheel vibration as I have just changed the front brakes, but it doesn't happen all the time. Other than that it seems to run fine although I am going to try some T99 and see how it runs.

 

I read with some amazement that a lot of salesmen don't advise customers of the correct fuel to use when handing over the keys!

I had a feeling due to other cars that I had owned before that it would be RON 98, but they still insisted on saying " use ONLY RON 98 or above, and only in EMERGENCIES use RON 95!"

Simple, I think the word "EMERGENCY" helps a bit in clearing up any doubts!

 

drop in mpg on V-Power for me but I'm not a very good test case as replaced the MAF shortly after the switch and the cold weather now will effect mpg.
