"Hi Jonesy,
You also forgot that the Celica is also far more reliable.
My last 4 cars from oldest to newest:
95 WRX saloon, 96 WRX estate, 98 galant VR4 and now the 95 Celica GT4
The WRX's sound so much better, I honestly believe they also handle a lot better and the kick from the turbo is great.
But.....the gearbox isn't great and the boxer engine suffers from piston slap which eventually means getting the engine rebuilt. I work in a jap import garage and 4 out of the last 6 WRX's we brought in needed engine jobs, and these were cars with 50 to 70k and looked after.
The availability of tuning parts for the Subaru is excellent but the Celica isn't exactly lacking either.
When I first drove my GT4 I thought it was slow. I got it from the garage I work for and bought it because it was extremely clean. The delivery from the turbo is not like the WRX or the EVO which comes in with a bang, but is very smooth. Unlike the EVO and WRX the boost stays right to the redline whereas with the other two the boost drops off about 1000 revs from the red.
Then... I had to deliver an EVO 5 down the country and myself and my coleague were not hanging around on the drive. Afterwards he told me he couldn't catch me when we were passing cars out and there was nothing between the two cars. Not bad for a car that is 30bhp down and about 140kg heavier.
Basically on paper the Celica shouldn't be as quick but it is, regardless of what Scooby and EVO owners say.
It is rarer, it is definately better looking and its more reliable.
The GT4 gets my vote "
Is it true about reliability he refers to?

I picked a scooby over the gt-4 for practicality (4 doors and a fairly large boot) the gt4 i drove was a nice enough car but didn't seem as sure footed (but this could be down to the tyres as it was a fresh import with new Japanese spec tyres) if you don't need practicality go for the gt4 if you do buy a scooby.

If I need practicality I would buy a Focus or something

My neighbour has a Civic Type R and his friend has a very very nice GT4 well sorted, when choosing my next car i nearly went for a GT4 ....but having had a FTO with only 2 doors being very similar inside to the GT4 i decided practicality ruled the day and 4 doors was needed so i now have a 95 WRX,love it!!.Also insurance was shockingly cheap just over the £500 mark(me and wife and mods)....courtesy of Gary (Keith Michaels).Whatever your decision just enjoy!!

Timeless looks if you ask me. I like Scoobies alot and love the sound but GT4s seem alot rarer on the roads which is why I bought one.
"Used Car Buyer" magazine tested a Escort Cosworth vs STI WRX vs Evo 4 vs GT4 ST205 and the GT4 came up on top. All great cars mind.

There was a 1/4 mile day at York Dragway on 28 Aug 2005. I was there in my red GT4 and there were lots of Scooby's there, I think it was a club day. Not many Scooby's were getting under 13.5sec but there was the odd one that got into mid 12's. There were plenty there with the 555 graphics all over them which made em look rather tasty. I may have plans to get my white st205 wrc the castrol graphics.

Honestjohn Carguides Hope this site helps you make up your mind, or at least know what to look for if you go for a GT4. I like them my self, might add one to my drive along side the Scooby one day..........

Had an ST205 for 3 years & an ST205 WRC (Again 3 years) ...& now in an STi V2
Sorry, but performance of the STi is in a different league, my WRC was running about 300 bhp & not only did it get spanked by a workmates P1 but also a 2000 PPP (rolling starts upto 60-70mph)...The STi has bucket loads more 'feel' & character & makes me smile every time i drive it (reminds me a lof of my old Integralé, but without the build issues & dodgy electrics!)
There's also a wealth of knowledge for Impreza's & plenty of specialists ...With the GT4 you get main dealers (Useless) , Fensport & Smithy (Toyauto... & a top guy) , so you might want to check if either are local enough to you.
P.S my list of 'consumables' for my Fours were:
2 Sets of Figure of eight links
1 Set of lower arms
2 Clutches
1 Turbo
1 Diff Mount

as above I've owned a GT4 totally standard st205 and the build quality was excellent but as standard the impreza would eat it alive as said before there aren't as many specialists about and parts cost a fortune,I'm now on my second impreza and haven't looked back, although I still love the twin turbo supra.
