Great post this. Does it matter the VXR was quicker? if you wanted a quick car most would not have purchased a standard WRX plus I suspect the VXR would also kick or certainly match a scoobies **** through the twisties if it was being driven well.

I only purchased the standard wrx for financial reasons,i am only 28 and insurance in N.Ireland is a rip-off.Another reason was the birth of our 2nd child, the bmw 330 coupe we had was no good for 2 baby seats

Fair play to the vxr it's a real stormer
top speed listed at 161+ mph

Basically all these cars are waiting for is 4 wheel drive then the choice of what car to get will make prices come down.

Cars that should come out with 4wd are (names made up of course)

1) Focus Cosworth 4wd
2) Vauxhall Astra VXR AWD
3) M3i (4WD) and twin scroll turbo
4) Honda Civic V-Tec Turbo AWD

Then we would get loads of threads with a similar theme

"Got slapped in the Twisties by a better looking car"
"Remapped my car but still got beaten by a rep in his Civic"
"Focus kicked my T25 and my Evo whatever Q"

I’ve read though this thread, and come to the conclusion that most have said. Anything not Subaru get slagged down. Have most ever been in a vectra. They can under steer from standard agreed.

But, put some coni's + some ebachs on there. Then get a full exhaust system on there, may be a panel fitter. Oh ye a remap. Mmmm

Like with scoobs. You’re going to see a bit of a beast.
In my honest opinion. If you get a scoob & leave it standard, there sh*t.
I got rid of my Vauxhall corsa gsi for my scoob. & In a way, I was gutted. Ye it booted well. But for the fuel that it uses, to what you get from a standard car. It’s not really that good.

(& Before anyone says a corsa gsi, it was 187bhp 2.0) I had it on the rollers.

I've seen standard WRX's on similar rollers give anywhere from about 205 to 230 ish bhp, but the bigger benefit is extending the useful power band up and down the rev range.

However, the Vectra probably has 300bhp or so with a remap, and lower transmission losses than a 4wd car. You won't get over 300bhp without changing the turbo. There's a real risk you won't match the torque of a mildly modified Vectra VXR and keep your existing WRX gearbox intact.

Say what you like about the Vectra, it's a 2.8 Litre turbo lump, which equals lots of torque and potential to get very decent power. I'd expect a chipped Vectra to be a comfortable match for an STi PPP in a straight line once rolling. And EVO mag pitched the Vectra against Mitsi Evo & scoob and were really rather surprised about how close it kept to them across "the twistys" in Wales.

Realistically, if you want to blow away chipped Vectra VXRs in high speed straight line work, you need to spend serious money on modifying a WRX, or start with a faster car to begin with.

Having said that, put a sports cat downpipe, change your up-pipe, maybe port your headers and fir a few Samco hoses and an ECUTEK remap, you might not be in a position to beat him, but your car will be a lot more fun than it is now. If you want to look after the gearbox but go a bit faster, consider an uprated top mount intercooler and hybrid td04 turbo, for perhaps 320bhp/320lbft. However, exhaust, ported headers, TMIC, hybrid td04 turbo, hoses, remap will probably cost in the £2.5k region or so. Bigger turbos and you're best to expect a gearbox and clutch change at some stage, ideally a front mount intercooler, so to go for 350bhp+ with daily driver safety levels, with new engine/gearbox parts fitted by a specialist, think £5k+. You might do it well for less, but don't rely on it.
Great post.

Been a while since I've heard so many ppl moaning about the Scooby.

In fact, this topic should be in the "OTHER MARQUES" section, mostly due to the moaning.

surely a wrx or sti should leave a vectra off the mark and up to 60,which i know is only a 5 ish second blast ,but by the time the vectra buts the power down the scoob has gone ! especially on a damp or wet typical day.
Loads of cars will give a scoob a run for the money in a straight line once rolling, but thats not the full package, the vectra in my opinion won't out handle or out brake a my sti8.

But don't knock vauxhall the've made fast cars for years anyone remember the lotus carlton, straight 6 twin turbo monster with 370bhp standard ! was the fastest soloon car ever made in the ninties.
