No I doubt it very much, 54 meg is fine. I assume you are on the gold package for AOL. The ping does seem high but what speedtest are you using to get that result.
ping the following webistes
start > run > cmd
then type
ping BBC - bbc.co.uk homepage - Home of the BBC on the Internet
try Jolt.co.uk - Online Gaming - Clan Server Rental as well
see what you get

to the original question - been with bethere for just over a month and no compliants - was getting 5/6mb from adsl max - now seeing 8mb with peaks for 10mb with bethere - A lot more stable as well. so far 9 out 10 - no issues recommending them.

that would suggest either wonky routing or you were downloading at the time you ran the pingtest??
nowt you can do about the routing im afraid

possible the route the data takes to the bbc and get back again is a little long winded, I remember a while back, routes to the BBC on AOL used to go via New York, and that was people in the UK accessing the BBC website. I can't really recommend AOL as an ISP to be honest, but if you are happy with them then appy days

yes indeed, OK every point there is a router, routers direct traffic around the net, think of a traffic policeman directing traffic, same thing......well in a way![Wink](images/smilies/wink.gif)
now look at this point on the bbc trace
6 22 ms 22 ms 23 ms sl-gw23-lon-12-0.sprintlink.net [213.206.157.153
]
7 23 ms 23 ms 23 ms sl-bb22-lon-8-0.sprintlink.net [213.206.128.60]
by here (the point below) it hops to America, then after that goes back to the UK![Lol1](images/smilies/lol1.gif)
Whois IP 144.232.9.163 [2006-12-27]
see here for that IP address
8 92 ms 92 ms 92 ms sl-bb20-nyc-2-0.sprintlink.net [144.232.9.163]
9 92 ms 92 ms 93 ms sl-gw9-nyc-8-0.sprintlink.net [144.232.7.94]
for low pings pings it really needs to take a better route, it goes from 23ms to 92ms and thats why, it's going over such a long distance
It's like driving a car. To get to London from Cardiff you wouldn't go via France would you????
now lets look at one on the Zen ISP

how more efficient is that route, very im sure you'll agree, nothing really you can do about this apart from go to another ISP

the first hop is your home router, thats quite high to be honest, with a 54 meg wireless card the ping should still be around the 1ms mark
im connected via ethernet cable which is far quicker and better than wireless in every single aspect

Steve IIRC you are on Zen????
I've heard mixed things about Be, how far away from the exchange are you and what is your loop attenuation, should give an indication on if it would be worth switching. Great price though for the speed

worth a look at the compare
