I only asked a question, yes or no answers would have sufficed
I am not paranoid, nor have I said I am paranoid, I asked a question, to which until cw42 started the thread was fine, and had given me more or less the answers I wanted, barring lydia's comments as Lydia had read the thread as it was intended

[quote=*Sonic*]My original post was asking was I within my rights to ask what he was doing,
Yes as long as you would not mind him asking why are you just wondering around the mall without buying anything.
"and could i demand to see his pictures, have them erased if of the kids etc."
No. Not even the police can demand that a photograph be destroyed once taken, copy write with photographer.
"people have been arrested and charged for taking pictures in shopping malls before now"
Not true. it's not illegal only if security guard asks you on behalf of the owners to stop, you were to ignore him and police were called would you be arrested, Then not for taking photos but for some jumped up charge like causing a public nuisance or breach of the peace.
Security guards in malls etc cannot confiscate any equipment, this would be theft.
This is a little know hobby called photography. Google "Street photography".
The taking of candid photographs in public places. Has been going on since photography started.
Anyway the authorities have plenty of CCTV footage of you & kids walking around the street and in the mall anyway this is also done without your consent.

Well possibly a mannequin molester at worst.

This country is getting closer to George Orwell’s vision of “1984” every day.
The Government is already trying to tell you what you can and cannot think as well as photograph.
Bet you though, God forbid, if a bomb had gone off in the mall the police would be after the bloke with camera looking for evidence. Dual standards or what?
Although if he was truly doing candid street photography why use flash and draw attention to himself?

my kids school plays this year had a new "photo" policy.........they sent a letter to all parents saying "take as many pics/movies as you like, obviously stick to the law (your own use, etc) but other than that crack on"........they then asked anyone who objected to their kids being photoed to let them know - so they could remove them from the school play
Just the way it should be.

His assault on me, caused all this to come out in the open![Smile](images/smilies/smile.gif)

To exploit your image for personal gain means you may be entitled to a cut. Where this startsin is open to negotiation [you in close up versus wide crowd shot...]. Cue common sense.
In the TV world we have to issue a participants release form - this would be for people actively taking part or 'being directed' it is not relevant to each reveler in Trafalgar square on new years' eve for e.g.
If you end up identifiable on that shops 2007 catalogue cover ask for a few quid modelling fee, if not rest easy, and dont take it personally![Wink](images/smilies/wink.gif)

stuff like this leads to why you cant take pictures of your own kids in the swimming pool, without the bloody managers permission.
it is just getting out of hand, I am sure people can make their own judgement calls on what is right and not right.

Now he had a fairly decent SLR & Camera bag, no tripod tho, but he looked a bit scruffy (David Bailey kind IYKWIM)
But I wasnt overly happy that he was taking pictures, as I saw no evidence of any kind of press pass, or ID etc, or signs up saying that photos are being taken etc etc, and a few other parents looked slightly concerned too
Now if he had pointed the camera in the direction of us & the kids, I would have definately gone over to him and had a few words, and demand that any pictures be erased
Am I within my rights to do this, or is anyone ok walking round taking pictures, he wasnt hiding the fact he was taking pictures either really
When I am out and about with my camera, I make sure I dont get other people (especially kids) in shot, and at other public places I have been to, photographers / video-ers have asked parents permission before shooting

Your like that character off harry enfield 'Frank' who sits in the pub with his mate Paul whitehouse and winds himself up over fek all
'Now if he had pointed the camera in the direction of us & the kids i would have said
OYYYYYY!!!
NOOOOO!!!!'
you may be perfectly within your rights to snap pictures to your hearts content in a shopping mall but if i for one minute found you turning the camera in my direction and taking any pictures of my kids for your own personal pleasure i would..........'
you can fill in the blank sonic you mad paranoid hedgehog
the world has gone mad and you are contributing your fair slice
Lord Shrek.....sonic...did you work at boots and develop the pictures of julia somerville in the bath with her 9 month old baby and shop her for child molestation?

Lord Shrek, I heard that there was a little more to those pictures...
Surely people can see *Sonic*'s point? Perhaps he is a little overly-sensitive to it, but its an emotive issue, as other posts in this thread demonstrate.

That reminds me Lord Shrek. Please the return the photograph of me in the bath aged 6. Youve had it for ages and I want it back. What have you been doing with it for all this time anyway?
