I don't think anyone needs a pit bull but then the dog that bit half my cheek off and nearly cost me my eye was well out of the dangerous breeds list.
Some of the opinions on here would shock even the most hardened Mail/Express **** reader.
I'd have far more time speaking to someone on a council estate than justifying people's existence to those who place themselves on a pedestal.
Without question, I find these people have massive insecurities and are a waste of space and a menace.
A girl died and her last moments were most certainly filled with pure terror and agony.
So crass comments about Chavs are as relevant as some of your views are valid.

I'll take all comments on the chin guys, but many of those without families that included a grandmother at 41 nor a token Pit Bull terrier will know where i'm coming from.

Any dog can kill, you just never know
we had a cross breed terrier, right heinz 57 it was, nice little dog, but it was so disobedient, it eventually went for our daughters ankles and that was the end, took it to the dog home the very same day coz I just couldn't risk it, I couldn't keep an eye on them all day 24/7 so I wasn't taking the risk, he was a right little git, and he wasn't a big muscly dog with any strength behind it.
As for the coments about how old the grandmother is, that is totally irrelevant, I had my 1st at 19, does that make me or my family chavs, pikeys, scum, or whatever is the in thing at the mo?? No it doesn't in my opinion it's your own bringing up and growing up that makes you incapable to look after a dog etc.

One young birth of course doesn't indicate anything, but a family trait pattern of it does in my mind say something, as does ownership of a Pit Bull terrier. Combine the two and heaven help us.

I have a Staffie, and not because I want to walk it around looking hard. It doesn't have a studded collar. It doesn't attack other dogs. It doesn't attack people, and I don't stand on street corners in a Hoodie while it barks at passers by.
Why did I decide to get a Staffie?
After my sister had looked after a couple of her friends Staffie's on separate occasions when they went on holiday. The dog immediately took to it's new home for the next few days. Was playful, happy, and liked nothing better than going out for a walk and chasing sticks. It never ran off even though it was being looked after by a relative stranger. Overall after seeing how well behaved and obviously well trained Staffies can be, and after reading up on the breed, both in books and over the Internet, all of which stated a Staffie is a loyal and well natured dog, I decided to get one. Best decision I made.
Wonderful dog, and a wonderful breed.
I will admit though, years ago if I'd seen a Staffie or any other "Hard dog" coming towards me on or off a lead, I'd have been wary. Why? Years of listening/reading about the odd bad story about them. Once you educate yourself you realise the true facts about the breed and realise what fantastic dogs they are.
It's funny how everyone still associates Staffies with Chav's and killing. Why? Because the papers only print the bad stories.
If you take a look at the video clip posted earlier, it states the statistically, Labradors bite more people.
I've been bitten by 2 dogs in my life time. One was a Poodle, the other was a small Terrier. I've never been bitten or mauled by a Killer dog !!!

And it's ok to expect a 5 year old to have the same knowledge? At the end of the day, these types of dogs are just a risk too far for most well-adjusted parents of young children, it's as simple as that.

When I was younger (A baby) My auntie had a staffie, he was a lovely dog and took a lot of stick off me as a small child (The usual tail pulling and sitting on etc) and when I was about 4 she got a pitbull too. She was a lovely dog and never went for anyone. She used to play with the staffie all the time and run after him and would roll all over the floor for her belly to be rubbed I never felt threatened and my parents used to let me stay at my auntie's fairly often, plus she babysat me a lot.
When she split with her fella, he kept the dogs, but even to this day she will say what lovely dogs they both were and she regrets not having at least one of them out of the split
Admittedly they do have a bad press, but that was my experience with both breeds at a young age.

I know a few Saffs and they seem lovely dogs, however as already stated two thirds of recorded "maulings" in a survey were by dogs that had showed no prior aggressive behaviour.
The reason you don't see "Killer Poodle" on the front page of the newspapers isn't because the press don't print it - it's because it doesn't happen.

Bottom line is this, some dogs by nature are more aggressive than others and we forget that even though they may be mans best friend dogs are still animals, and always have the potential to be dangerous. The child had no chance even if the dog was merely play fighting. IMO pitbulls are killers and ALL dogs should be muzzeled and kept on a leash at all times especially in the presence of children.
peace

Typical SNET middle class comments.
You say a 46yo Grannie is bad until you work the maths out.
She being 20 when having daughter, daughter and her BF have kiddy when shes 26 it's not that shocking or 'common'

Edited to add : I have noticed that owners of these dangerous dogs are usually pretty hard, owning these dogs must be a sub-conscious way of expressing this toughness. I would never fight a dangerous dog owner, or even say 'boo' to one, far too risky.

Are you saying she's scum too? Grandmothers in their 20's I can understand, but 46? You're having a laugh mate.
As to people saying lots of breeds of dogs aren't dangerous like Labs for example, that is just wrong.
My family Lab when I was a teenager was a wonderful pet but he had his snapping point which I found out when I stupidly teased him. I got bitten very hard, he never did it again and he knew what he had done as soon as he did it was wrong but I deserved it. Had he wished to go further he was more than capable of doing me serious damage so could easily kill a child. He also bit the postman when he teased him when out guarding the house. All dogs have their snapping point, doesn't matter how good a family pet they are.
A lab I walked at a dogs home I later found out had a very dark past, he had an 'issue' with having his ears touched. When his owner did it while bent over him he jumped up and tore his owners face off, literally. In my opinion that dog was dangerous and should have been destroyed but its owner felt different and wanted it rehomed instead. I don't think it got rehomed and stayed at the home.
There were lots of breeds in the rehoming centre that were there for violent behaviour and many of them you would normally consider to be a wonderfull family pet. After all the incidents over the last 20 odd years people should never leave any dog with a child, its not just the obvious breeds that can kill.
Its deeply saddening that little girl lost her life, I just hope her uncle pays the penalty for owning an illegal animal that resulted in her death.
