as a all round game the GT series is the best. L4S may have better physics (although not the best) but it also has a much bigger learning curve and most people wont enjoy it unless they are hardcore racing game enthusiasts

I havent tried Rfactor either but I hear thats meant to be better than L4S.

L4S is the best Ive played though. Wish they could get some major funding behind them so they could speed up the programming process and make the game even better still.

Your forgetting one game
GTR 2 - gotta be the best offering available upto now.
Proper driving sim too, can be as real as you want it.
no arcade driving in this , its very hard though. You'll spend weeks on one track trying to perfect it and still be on novice setting .Play it online too against as much as 24 players i think.

Enthusia on the PS3 could have brilliant physics. The problem with the PS2 was that it was never powerful enough to calculate all the things that require calculating, and xbox racers are all made to make maximum money by appealing to every one.

If you like sitting at a desk for your gaming

I prefer a nice comfy leather sofa and big screen to do my gaming.

Cant be bothered with pc gaming, very versatile but you can get a 360 for the price of a decent graphics card, I suppose if you want the ultimate performance a PC it is but like high end audio its easy to get caught up on framerates, mip mapping, overclocking, sli, pixel shaders and all that bollocks and miss the point, like a decent midi system a console gives you most of the experience and performance without the aggro and expense.

And where does the steering wheel go.....flop around on your knees?

Hourse for courses, I just get bored of GT type games where hitting a barrier rather than braking can often result in a faster lap time....and no damage too? You need parts of your car to break if you crash!

How about 'realistic' mode where if you crash you are out. Big crash means you are out for a few days. Very big crash means you can't play that game ever again

I can see one lap of the 'Ring would take half an hour...

After 55 or seconds there is Porka GT, Red with a Blue stripe over the roof with Gruppe M down the side, my mate used to work for the race team, the owner wrapped the team up at the end of '05 so how up to date is it?

One thing you have to remember is market appeal. Not everybody wants a real life racing sim. Look at the Richard Burns Rally game. Technically and physics wise, it was supposed to be spot on and realistic. Put a lot of people off though because despite what you may think, not everyone is a driving god and people do want the arcade style of the game to have fun.

Yes, if you want a simulation, get one of the GTR PC games and set it all up with a decent wheel, pedals, etc. If you want to have fun, get one of the console racers that have an arcade element in them.

I do agree with that 100%, games should at least give the option of having full realism on. Richard Burns Rally was good becuase if you crashed you were out, end of.

As for steering wheel, i'll be building a seat and frame for when I buy the 360 wireless wheel

GTR was far too hard but I got addicted to the sound of the cars
GTR:Legends - great fun, the car's felt alive
GTR2 - Now we're talking, you can actually catch the backend now rather than endlessly spinning out.
Race:WTCC - Still getting to grips with it. The close racing and fewer laps brings a new element to the game. Make a mistake and you really fall behind.

All time favourite sim though has to be RBR. Never has a game rewarded you for putting the time in to practice on it. Once you've got the hang of it there's nothing like feeling of getting the car round the hairpins of the French tarmac stages.

I brought a PS2 for GT4, played it for 2 weeks and got so bored I couldn't be bothered with it. It won't even let you do a handbrake turn on the rally stages. Oh and who wants to leave the console on for 24 hours whilst it races around the ring for you!?!

GT4 is one of the most overrated car driving games ever, had much more fun with toca race driver. Don't get me wrong, I play GT4 a lot and like it loads, however it falls down in a fair few places. I mean I got the caterham in GT4 and where on earth did they get the 3 speed transmission from? the car takes 10/15 seconds to get to 60 FFS. I've driven sevens (I own a westie) and the game drives nothing like the real life ones. And as for it having hundreds of cars, 50 variations of a scoob/skyline/evo/civic does NOT count.

And the GT5 (or whatever it'll be called) will NOT look like that in the game footage. I don't care what the replay looks like, I rarely watch them, I prefer instead to play the game. If I wanted to watch cool footage then I'd watch a real TV race.
Agree with all this. I would love to see a GPB RWD rally simulation with Escorts, Chevettes, Mantas, Sunbeam, Lancia 037 etc etc that was a proper sim, not an arcade racer which GT is (though I enjoy playing it).

I bought the first release and played it with a few from here for ages and then never went back for the 2nd release although it does look very good. Would like to get back into it especially as I have the chair and wheel setup (stuck out in the garage ) that SM has above but never seem to find the time to set it all up.

Edit: Ooops 1 minute too late.
i got into it sooo much, i entered into a GTR league and now im placed in division 2

my G/F works late shifts so i had nothing to do at evenings after work, i normally race 4 nights out the week, although i took a break after christmas, and i basically just keep tanking around the same track all night trying to get that tiny bit faster, i only really know 2 tracks properlly

the L4S game can be graphically improved if you download the texture packs available from the forum, there is also a CSR sound mod which gives you stuff like brake squeel and backfire noise, although i found i was putting in faster times when i switched it off

the G/F hates the game, as the sound of engines droning on all night drives her potty its not any easy game to play if you are used to stuff like GT4 IMO, i normally drive the XRR GTR car now and its a right "hairy chested medallion" beast of the thing to get around the corners
