It is hard at first as I know well enough since I went cold turkey on it too. Just keep thinking of all the bad things it does to you and also the extra cash you will have-it mounts up very quickly.

I cornered the market in Maltesers!

Well its the third day now and i feel miles better than i did yesterday
I was such a grumpy sod last night, and i was really really close to 'just having a cheeky one' but i somehow managed not to
Ive been up really this morning and went to tesco's to do some shopping and get a paper. Just trying to keep myself occupied so im not thinking about it all the time. Im working from 5-11.30 this evening so tonight should fly by too, looking forward to getting to monday (if i get there) so can celebrate my first whole week as a non smoker

I gave up last New Years Eve after 12 years of at least 20 a day. Although I never said to myself I was giving up, I just thought i'd see how long I could go without a smoke while going cold turkey. I said at the time, and still say, that if I NEED a smoke i'll have one. So whenever I got a craving I asked myself if I needed one, or if I wanted one. The answer was always that I wanted one, so I didn't have one. I still have the last packet of Benson's I bought sitting in my room, along with my Zippo!

I can't believe how easy it was to stop. And I still feel a bit ashamed that I didn't do it sooner. Still, i've done it now and feel SOOOO much better for it

To everyone that's trying to give up, stick with it and you'll soon have it cracked

Ric, mate. If we find out you've let the side down by having "a cheeky one" then we're gonna get the entire SMACS down to give you another Chinese burn punishment - and NO COCONUT OIL!!

By the time everyone of us has done a burn, i reckon we'll have probably worn away both your wrists, your hands will drop off and you'll never be able to smoke again!

Only messing mate. Hope things are still going ok. You can do it!!

P.s My mum came off 40 a day overnight when she discovered she was pregnant (not an option to you of course! ) and my dad worked down from 60 a day to **** all in two weeks using nothing but willpower alone!

As already stated

ALLEN CARR

The man is a genius.

I have just packed them in after reading his book and I am enjoying every second of being a non smoker.

Give it a try.

ALLEN CARR

The man is a genius.
....was a genius. RIP

His method is spot on and it's comical watching people struggle with x, y or z, still craving one after so many years, using substitutes (chewing gum etc).

Just read the feckin book and it will make the whole process a whole lot easier.

Loads of ways of stopping and many stop successfully and easily just using willpower, but some methods can even make it enjoyable Keeping yourself busy (as Rannoch suggested) is a big help and when coupled with Allen Carr's simple psychology, the odds become stacked in your favour.

And most importantly, take a huge deal of pride from giving your body the biggest present you could ever give it..

Working for the NHS is good persuasion to give up, as I can't smoke on site, I have to try and cross a busy main road if I want a ciggie in my lunch break and most people in my department moan at me when I come back in stinking of smoke! I've cut down from about 30 a day to about 5 recently. Been smoking for 6 years and I hate having that constant cough! Really annoys me BUT... I don't have the willpower, I know its killing me but I can't help it!!

Roll on July and I'll be giving up then!

Advert on Tv says the average smoker goes through 5000 cigs a year! How much is a pack? £5.50 ish? Well over £1000 a year to kill yourself, make yourself stink, make yourself age quicker. You must be some dumb b@stard to smoke!

the logic you smokers come out with is amazing. Even more so you work in the health industry.

I gave up a few years back after a 10 year stint and I must say that it is one of the best things I have ever done and I can't believe that I used to partake in such a crap habit.
Lowering my Grandfather's coffin into the ground yesterday (died of lung cancer) confirmed to me that smoking robs the lives of everyone, not just the people that smoke.
I'm not in favour of banning smoking, I believe people should have a right to do what they want with their lives, but as we have the choice, we should be responsible about what we do with our life as it is fleeting.

Well, over a week now, and still not had a ***
Dont really miss it apart from when ive been drinking, and i'll be honest i do miss it at certain times (ie after a meal is probably the worst ), but have to say im not missing the smell of faggy clothes or stinking fingers and seem to have loads of pound coins accumulating which is nice

I feel certain that i will kick this dirty habit, and already have a reward lined up for myself over the next few days for doing what i said i would do

Will post again in another week to keep myself focused and not to have a 'cheeky one', thanks to all the other Snet members for the words of wisdom and saying it like it is

You are doing really well monkey, if you can stay iron hard and resist any temptation, and there will always be someone who will offer you one, then your resolve gets stronger and it becomes easier and easier to stay off them. One sly ciggy could ruin it all though.

Well done speedy. I gave up on New Years Eve and am staying off the smokes for good.

Handy hint: when someone offers you a ciggie, say "No thanks, I don't smoke". If you say "No thanks, I've given up.", you will often find smokers (embarrassed by their inability to give up) will try and persuade you to "have just one, you know you want to", to make themselves feel less bad for still smoking.

Well done 2 everyone giving up smoking.

Well tomorrow will be my first day to give up

I was going to do it on the 1st but I still have my duty frees and if I know they are around or I chuck them then it would bug me, so my last packet is what I opened lastnight, they'll be finished tonight so tomorrow will be the start.

I went to Boots the other day and picked up a change one thing booklet for stopping smoking which has a week by week progress sheet in and I bought NicAssist gum, buy one get one half price, I've tried before to give up using patches and they made me ill and I started smoking again, some people don't need to use anything but I need something that has me doing something so gum was best for me, I might go get some of theose inhalors (sp?) too to keep my hands busy.

Julz,

Have you tried the gum? I did when I tried to give up last year. The gum was disgusting. It was like chewing an ashtray and made me feel nauseous. Give it a go by all means, but don't go out, buy the biggest pack available, have one piece and end up giving the rest away like I did.

*Sonic* said exactly the same thing when he tried them, so we have quite a few packets stashed in the cupboard

Good stuff mate, ive been keeping myself busy, and to be honest havent missed it as much as i thought i would
Know what you mean about the duty free **** tho, i had over 400, but decided to sell them, otherwise i would of just kept putting it off and off, and probably not bothered in the end but i have a bit saved up for my tomtom that i will buy myself at the end of the month as a treat

Thanks again to everyone for the comments, and good luck to my fellow scoobynetters that are also giving up, we'll all get there in the end

I spend £216 a year smoking, so the finance part doesn't help me in my quest to give up, only the health/cancer part.

I'll be a non smoker next month, forms are filled in and i'm preparing myself to give up end of this month after 15 years smoking, eek!!

Well done to speedy, keep it up
