It's quite sad that we're unable to have decent conversation on here.
For what it's worth, I found the programme very touching. Those executed whilst suffering from PTSD were wronged; those capable individuals executed for persistent desertion fell foul of law of the time and do not deserve a pardon.

It's a shame the thread has gone gay, but I'm sure it's not too late for 'James' to wow us with a sensitively and intelligently authored précis of the programme.

Yes I did see it. Found it quite repetitive actually and thought the whole subject deserved more debate on whether they should have been pardoned or not.
I for one reckon that they should have let sleeping dogs lie and pardoned nobody. It's a symptom of our hand wringing apologistic nature these days to go over old 'contraversial' ground in this country's history and 'PC' everything.
The best line in the programme was the line about Haig taking an interest in the condemned men and actually saving 9 out of 10 from their death sentance. This would say to me that justice had been done on that day.

I saw it too and found the personal stories of the men involved fascinating.
Was pleasantly surprised to find "lefty" Iain Hislop taking a balanced approach to the matter. I think there are a small number of cases where we can now say that the medical evidence suggests that the men were suffering from "shellshock" and clearly they should have been in hospital, not on death row. However, the whole point is that we understand these concepts much better these days.
Haig is seen as the villain now, but he was in fact much respected by the troops that fought in WW1. As above, he would pardon men wherever he could, but ultimately he could not ignore the laws of the British Army of the day. I think it would be meaningless to now pardon all the men concerned based on our modern view of the world.

Didn't see it.Wish I had.
An old gentleman I know who served in WWII said the excitement for people to join up in WW1 wasn't replicated the second time around but people were resigned to their fate.
I find WW1 and all about it one of the saddest wars. Not that you get 'good, cheery or poor' wars if you know what I mean.

Thankfully back on topic after a puzzling diversion. I disagree with the head in the sand stance and letting things be. There are a lot of family members of the deceased campaigning for posthumous pardons so it can't just be ignored. These men made the ultimate sacrifice so at the very least they deserve a review of their charges. For the record I am not gay/homosexual and will not be wrestling Edcase for James' attention!
