If it goes away when warm, it won't be the maf.


It is probably the closed loop lambda sensor constantly adjust the mixture when the car is cold.
The older the sensor is, the more pronounced the symptons may become.

 

That is the problem exactly, looks like most of them suffer with this, i am going to phone the main dealer and see if i can test drive a new one and see if they are the same

 

Why not, just make sure the engine is cold.

 

just spoke to main dealer they assure me that it is nothing and that 95% of newly fitted clutches on the STi and the legacy do this. They said it can be stopped by slipping the clutch, but only for six months then it returns, but by doing this i will burn the clutch out. so i think i will cope with it.

But you said that it happened when accelerating, not pulling away??
When you get to the biting point and then proceed to let the clutch up, does it judder??

If you go to the link i have added you'll find that it is more than likely clutch judder! Mine used to be terrible first thing, particularly in damp or cold weather, but a couple of blasts away from the traffic lights putting a bit of strain on the clutch soon sorted it. I have since had a new clutch and flywheel but there is still a small amount of judder!

i have i 96 wagon that splutters when cold even if i leave it ticking over to get warm still can't fist it. why is this, this is not clutch judder it is over fueling will this cost an arm and a leg to fi. this is my first subaru turbo. thanks nick

It's like groundhog day this thread.

My 01 bugeye does have slight clutch judder, but only sometimes when damp (the air, not me). Also it occasionally feels like it's got a very minor misfire when doing my 'old age sunday driver' impression when driving low revs in a morning.

Did I mention this thread is like groundhog day...

As you appear to be in the Greater Manchester area, give Steve at Cotton Competition a call (Cotcomp Home)
He has an STi8 as a courtesy car so you could leave it overnight AND get a chance to compare yours to another.

 

If she just described the problem properly, i'm pretty sure that someone could diagnose the fault!
