I wait for the day to see these doleys with no benefit coming in and having no NHS to stagger into when their addictions get the better of them physically or mentally

I thought it was funny when Gerry used the consultants analogy "It's like I've only been trained with a sword and don't know how to fight with a rifle !"
If he was in a battle, he'd either learn very quickly or die very quickly !
As Dave said, surely a refresher course would be appropriate.

But I was struck by the enthusiasm of many consultants for change last night. To be fair to them, the system conspires against them, too. European approval to move a couple of walls??? WTF
I can see some real good coming out of this programme, but have a sinking feling that it will be like Jamie Oliver's school dinners and once the novelty dies down, it all reverts back to the same old ways.
What the NHS needs is 100 Gerry Robinsons, full time.
Richard.

my dad is in hospital now (been in since chrimbo day) and it is appalling. The nurses dont appear to hand over between shifts (they dont pass on patient info to the new shift). the ward my dad is on is in a wing in the hospital and it is serviced by 2 nurses and upto 3 support staff (care workers I think they are called), there are 4 wards in this wing and if each ward is full then this means they are looking after 32 patients!!
It took over 2 weeks for the consultant to arrange any tests on my dad, and we have found out yesterday that the consultant whos care my dad is under, isnt actually based at this hospital but another one that is under the same health care district or something (Dad is in Warrington General, Consultant is at Halton Hospital) Consultant it appears sees my dad once a week. We are still awaiting results on 1 of the tests. the hospital ward looks dirty as well (may just be the paint scheme though)

But I did hear Robinson say that he would like to strangle all managment consultants (or something like that). I'd probably agree but how would he describe his role in all this, if not exactly the same thing? A bit ironic that bit.

Has anyone noticed that eye doctors always wear glasses?

Got to admit, I've only ever had good service at the NHS apart from a multiply cocked up whipping out of four wisdom teeth.
MRI scan? Two weeks.
Chest pain? Treated very well indeed (was a lung infection)
Face sliced open by surfboard fin? Immediate "repair" carried out.
Shoulder dislocated? Good treatment and physio.
CAT scan after being kicked in by six yobs? Top service.
Both heels broken? Very well dealt with.
Broken Coccyx? Embarrassing but tactfully dealt with (!)
The list goes on...

It *can* be good, there's no doubt. But if you're elderly, suffer from a chronic illness or are housebound, believe me it's a very different story. And if you had some of the conditions you listed there these days, you'd have a ball with the new "Gateway" allocation process. Not.

Why did you socialize with them for 7 years if they were ******?

If we use statistics then probably yes!
Deep - The wife used to work at a Private hospital.
The only ***** that "worked" there were consultants !

And the last episode twist being that theatres were empty on Friday afternoons because the Primary Care Trust did not have enough dosh to pay for the extra operations that could be done.
Then Patricia Hewitt gave her regal patronising comments Lucky I didn't have a brick handy.........

Another interesting fact from the programme, private hospitals manage twice the workrate compared to NHS hospitals, what a surprise
Not knocking Gerry's accomplishments in his short time there, but it would be a minor miracle even if he could match a private hospital on workrate and value per £.
Good to see the General Manager pulling his finger out and floor walking and connecting with the plebs. He seemed surprised about the amount of influence that he had with the workers, and the amount of change he could accomplish merely by being there and showing an interest.

Scooby - He's the Chief Exec, not General manager!
Agree about the work rate of private hospitals.
The one near us has a very tasty collection of cars outside so presume the pay is rather healthy!

Not really - about £100k. Which isn't enough to attract the really big hitters who realise that tapping away on a computer all day behind closed doors isn't exactly the best way to get the best out of your team of people.
Last night's programme was a bit weak, unfortunately. But i do hope at least SOME of the feckless morons in charge of the various hospitals and PCTs saw it, and if they didn't, are now made to sit down at learn from it. We can only live in hope.

I have to say that with the major operations I have had the consultants have been first class in every way. They told me everything i needed to know, did the operations perfectly and were also very pleasant and friendly.
The Hospital staff and the rest of the surgical teams were all just as friendly and helpful.
The real loss of money is in the enormous and unnecessary beaurocracy which has been created by the government who vote themselves enormous salaries and cripple the NHS as far as money is concerned. Having got a good number of nurses and doctors traine up, the PCT's are now sacking them in large numbers of course!

Rotherham hospital, hmmmmmmm
Various tiers like in any other job, good and bad. The same job some do it well, some do it adequately and others ….
Recent experiences of the said hospital.
Consultant and head of department was fine. Put a lot of hours in, conducted himself in a professional manner but was also understanding. And importantly was always available (here’s my number type of scenario)
One of his underlings!!! a total and utter waste of time, space and oxygen.
Terrible attitude and totally uncaring. Didn’t even bring herself up to speed before coming to see us (hence why I asked / insisted she left our room, read the case notes and come back to see us when suitably appraised of the situation) her face was a picture, bit like a bulldog licking **** off a nettle.
Attitude attitude attitude.
Staff on the wards, I could not fault.
How to p!ss off a consultant ….. call him Doctor they don’t like it.
And when reporting figures with regards to MRSA they lie, they simply but it down as Staphylococcus aureus (the SA bit)
