If everyone in the developed world gave 1% of their income to those in the developing world it would be possible to eradicate poverty.
Two thirds of the world has never seen a phone.
A child dies every nine seconds due to poverty (typically to provide clean water and food)
I am not saying right or wrong however they are powerful statistics.
To make a difference you don't need to welcome anyone into your home. These are real people like you and me and would much prefer to have a little bit of land they can farm, or a business they can develop. They don't want charity, they desperately need support.
The worst for me are the AIDS pictures, a 'punishment' according to some on here, but to see children dying of AIDS, in part, because of a lack of political acceptance by Governments.

However I remain unconvinced that global warming is a man made effect - the evidence is not compelling.
I do think the earth is warming up - but there ain't much we can do about it.
Inane drivel - where?

It would merely be more money to be diverted into the coffers of the ruling tribes enabling them to buy more guns to fight more wars
![Frown](images/smilies/frown.gif)
Look at Ethiopia, there are still people dying of poverty and starvation there, that's not stopping their government financing the war in Sudan/Darfur on a massive scale though is it

Tribal Witch Doctors are at the root of that one
The men are going to them looking for a cure, and the 'doctors' tell them that the only way to cure it is to have sex with a virgin
So what do they do? They go out and rape a child![EEK!](images/smilies/eek.gif)

Regading AIDS your comments are absolutely true - but to suggest they are the sole source of the problem is fatuous.
Although I suppose using your specious argument we can just turn our backs.
However if we are not part of the solution then we are part of the problem.

We are, by pure nature betwixt two Ice Ages.. but what we are doing is exacerbating the problem in so much as by burning fossil fuels *instead of allowing Bubba to collect them all * we are rapidly increasing the natural occuring carbon emissions to the point of saturation, thereby decreasing the time in between said Ice Ages ...
(drivel by the way that we should 'feel' for these people .. admittedly its a horrible thing , but Charity my dear Sir, begins at home

I didn't say they were the sole source of the problem. African tribal culture is at the root of the problem, and no amount of intervention from well-meaning westerners (or self interested ones - see CIA) is going to change that![Frown](images/smilies/frown.gif)
I know it sounds racist, and I don't mean it to be, but I do believe that Africans as a race are incapable of running a stable democatic society.

Pretending bad things don't happen in this world doesn't stop them happening.
Blaming "socialists" for either the events portrayed or publishing the photographs just shows how utterly ignorant you really are.
Do the harsh realities of what mankind really is escape you?
And as for sentimental claptrap...sigh...
Stunning images, nothing sentimental about it. Just one photographers work in capturing a lot of what we in the UK, thankfully, don't have to endure on a daily basis.

I think you'll find you can't. My opinion I expressed was directed to a specific comment in one of Rannoch's posts. Oh it was the comment I quoted, funnily enough

Thats not what I said .. I explained why it happened - and there are westerners there trying to explain it.
But, of course, the men want to continue ******** everything they can so deny that it is the problem and they will not wear condoms even if given free ....... they need to take SOME responsibility for themselves!

Well it is, isn't it. The responses that is, not necessarily the images. The majority of the people on this thread, indeed this site, are materialists almost by definition. It's pathetic to see them dish out empty words about those pictures in order to make themselves feel good, and then do absolutely nothing to resolve it.

Many political observers in Southern Africa believe that the hardest and most devastating thing that Mandela has done politically was openly telling the world that his son died of AIDS.
Given what Mandela has achieved that is a pretty stunning indictment of a political rather than tribal problem.

To take action does not mean you have to live in a cardboard box and wear sackcloth and ashes. One of the most challenging areas of life in the western world is balancing wealth with contribution.
Please don't judge others in the world by your perspective of it.

I think Nelson Mandela might disagree with you. It may be imperfect but things can change.

Far cleverer and better informed people than me are saying already that if you want to see the future of South Africa, look at the present of Zimbabwe

The underlying causes need to be fixed and these never will because of human nature.
And how does a phone help people who are starving? It's also not necessarily a bad thing either.
As I said earlier, it will never happen. You can't change opinions or cultures overnight, or even across generations.
