My brittlenose catfish like cleaning the glass and eating algae off the bogwood. I love them, but not as much as my Clown Loaches. They are such fun. Mine do spend alot of the day under the bogwood, but the smallest of them, which was the first one I had, seems to be out all day. Perhaps he is braver than the rest of them.
Got a plec too. It's bloody useless and I never see it. To say they clean the glass would be ridiculous! It never comes out of its hideyhole!

Plecs are nocturnal, best stay up late at night to see him. Alternatively blue neon lights at night time will let you see the tank but the fish still think its dark so will see the nocturnal fish swimming about.
Glad the clowns are doing well, will always be my favourite fish just for the entertainment value.

Yeah, the Clowns are doing very well. Might have to try the blue light -do they affect the amount of algae that grows though?

Not as such. The lights are generally designed for either computer cases or footwells of the Nova brigade. The lights will need to be wired into an ac adapter and thats where I had all the issues getting that sorted. However i'm completely useless with anything electrical so if you know anyone with an ounce of knowledge on wiring then it wont be difficult.
Search for cold cathode tubes. Then get an ac adapter from Maplins. The lights will need some bath sealant around the ends to waterproof them. Then its cut the ends off the ac adapter and the lights and use a wiring block to connect them. Then find a way of attaching them in the tank, possibly using heavy duty velcro from Homebase and the like.

Yep but once its done you look at it and think how stupidly simple it is! However I then found out the lights weren't powerful enough to light my corner tank brightly because of the shape of the tank so need another set which I really can't be bothered with at the moment.

a million sellers on ebay do blue lights for fish tanks. No DIY needed, buy them - plonk them over the tank....plug in.

Hey B2Z
Do you all remember I posted in here about my Dad's old Tank nice big 5' x 18 x 18 and how he used to keep marine but then they all died and he got so dishreartened that he never really took much interest in fish again
Well recently all his tropical fish died as one of the thermometers broke and essentially boiled the fish
Now he has give up completely, and wants to get rid of his Tank and all its accessories
So if you know anyone who might be interested in a 5'x18"x18" tank with stand, gravel, gravel plates, 2 fluval 4's an Eheim external pump (i think) a powerhead, spray bar, protein skimmer (think he still has that)
He still has all the coral too, so if you know anyone who might be interested in the above, then let me know
Cheers
Steve

I had a problem with my rift lake cichlid tank a few days ago. While out at work the filter blocked and I lost all aeration. In a noramlly stocked tank this would be ok. But as it was a heavily stocked rift lake with lots of fish in, by the time I got home 14 out of 25 had died. I was in tears and worked out I lost £150 worth of fish and will struggle to find some of them again.
Not going to give up though and am buying an air pup and air stone to put in tank. So if the filter does block again the tank will still have a good aeration source.

It's like an old friend returning this thread is.
Well, I lost all my Brittlenosed Catfish, don't know how, they just disappeared while we were on holiday Lost a couple of Zebras and a Neon, but that's it. Still have 9/10ish of the neons and zebras, 4 clown loaches and a plec who's bloody useless cos it's only about an inch long and hides under the bogwood all the time!
Plants as getting more established though and have just ordered some moss ***** off Ebay and some ground cover plants which will look good too I hope.
Don't know whether to get some more brittlenoses or steer clear. Saw some lovely leopard spot corydoras which look like fun too.
Water quality is very good, so I'm really pleased and as a novice, I know alot more now than I did back then! (Thanks to the support of guys on here mainly!)

Since I last posted, my Dad sold his 5 foot tank for 50 quid including the stand and hood etc etc
I have lost my Golden Nugget Plec which was a present as they arent cheap, and lost a polka dot loach and one of my torpedos, I realised the filter pump had failed
Donna has also lost her two Sun Catfish and her Synodontis, a common Plec and Siamese Fighting Fish and Kissing Gourami during a house move

Sonic, sorry to hear about your losses and know how it feels. I've given up with golden nugget plecs as having 3 all die within a few months of getting them made me think they don't like my tank water. The red torpedo's are stunning fish and you should be able to get them again.

I've just moved house and paid the local fish shop bloke to move it for me. He only wanted £50 afterwards ( ) but gave him more because he did the whole lot in a couple of hours and it would have taken me all day to do it and didn't lose any fish (well so far one week later).

Thanks Daz
It was a beauty, I did post a pic of him on this thread, I had him just over a year
I still have one torpedo left and he his growing quite well and spends a lot of time with the clown loach
The fish survived the move, until the electric ran out after being told it wasnt a meter and was on direct debit etc, and they wouldnt send someone out, so sadly all the fish died

[quote=Tam the bam;7327399] I used to have lots of tanks as I bred Malawi's
One of my tanks is a combined rift lake ie a malawi and tanganyika tank. Now got about 12 tropheus and 20 malawi's in it and they all seem to be doing very well.

Get most of my cichlids from a place near Crewe called A-Z Aquatics A-Z Aquatics
They have a very good range at good prices and the staff are very helpful. I recently bought from them some Tropheus Dubosi's, Ikola Kaisers, Cherry spots, Moliro and some Tropheus black pemba's. All stunning fish in good condition and getting on well with all the others including the Malawi's.

I've had a go at taking a few pics tonight, but they're a bit pants! No flash doesn't make it easy!
I know I have alot of snails - I was hoping the loaches would have them. I may need to reduce their food a bit!
