I've had a go at taking a few pics tonight, but they're a bit pants! No flash doesn't make it easy!
I know I have alot of snails - I was hoping the loaches would have them. I may need to reduce their food a bit!

i had a load of snails in my tank once absolute b@stard to get rid of they breed like mad.
in the end i had to carefully remove the fish to a seperate small tank for a couple of hours while i completely drained it down and washed the gravel and other washable items in boiling water,i was recomended to do this by the local tropical fish shop.
i did reuse the original water minus approx 15% and the filter pads to maintain the bacteria.
that was 2 years ago and still snail free just dont buy live plants anymore as that is where they came from.

Blimey Jonny, don't fancy doing that! Yes, it was from live plants.... I shall be scrubbing any more that I buy.
Someone suggested putting a lettuce leaf in the tank and as they are attraced to it, they all jump on board and you can get rid. Clown loaches are supposed to like eating them, so I'll try the lettuce and feeding them less.

Most of my Malawi's are Mbuna but do have a couple of Auloncara too. The Malawi's tend to chase each other about and leave the Tanganyikan's alone. The Tanganyikan's of similar size chase each other about and there is no agression between the two different lake groups. Once I've updated my stocking list I'll post it up here for you.

I could never manage snails in previous tanks so with this tank I went for a sand base with artificial plants.
The loaches love the sand they dig right down with sand flushing out of their gills. The bottom is always spotless.
I had to move the tank forward a few days ago to wall paper and left it half drained for a couple of hours before I put it back and refilled. My oldest loach now around 22-23 years old looked stressed and didn't eat for a couple of days. Looks OK now though.

Just noticed I must have taken the pictures at christmas because you can see the tree lights reflecting on the glass.
Cheers

I got all of the rocks and bogwood out today and soaked them in boiling water to kill any snail eggs. I didn't want to have to do this, but I thought I might as well try. Also took some of the gravel out and did the same.
Took all of the plants out and washed them thoroughly, paying particular attention to the backs of the leaves. Hopefully this will reduce the new snails appearing for a bit at least! Still seen a few fully grown ones since doing all this...
Got some new bristlenosed catfish today too Got 2 females and a male, so I am hoping for babies! The male is massive!

see this thread is still going strong !
just upgraded my tank today, bought a Beech Juwel vision 180, running with 2x tetratec external filters and a tetratec air pump, it is totally silent compared to the constant drone of my old setup, so I'm well pleased..
Hopefully it won't take too long before I can move my fish over !

Well it's finally happened some of my Malawi's have started breeding. Now have a 2cm long yellow lab fry which is doing very well. My partners tank now has about 10 black molly fry in it too, hope most of them survive.

Have you set up any nursery nets?
#312
In the past I've tried nursery tanks and all the fry died. Since last time I've relocated all the larger fish out of the tank so now have left the molly fry to swim freely. They all hide in the plants which are being guarded by the adult mollies and still seem to have all 10 fry after 4 days which is looking good.

Mollys seem to breed like rabbits! I keep some in my reef tank sump and the fry feed the display tank...almost a constant supply of the little things!
Oddly teh nonly place they seem to survive is if they stay in the sump with the adults...might just be lots of hiding spaces?

Just noticed a load more black molly fry tonight, these are smallers ones and think I've now got 15-20 of them. The larger ones are about 1.5cm long and smaller ones about 1cm. Be interesting to see how many survive.

I have a 3ft tank, with a variety of fish that are easy to care for, as I have only had the setup a few months, and have never kept fish before..
it mostly comprises of a mix of tetras, barbs, gouramis, half beak, panchax, catfish, lobster and leopard plec
all is good, apart from the lobster eats all my plants (no longer a problem as I have found a cheap site for plants) and the plec has started ****ting turds similar in size to what my german pointer deposits in the garden..
this leaves me having to clean the tank a bit more often than I would like (every couple of weeks) as he seems to be constantly pumping turd..
think he is nicking the lobsters food, but they are not over fed..
any way to reduce the turd by adding something to the water to help it breakdown, or is it just a case of more cleaning and water changes ?
advice welcome..

I had fish one time i come in from school and my mum had accidenty knocked the light into the tank. Mad, the light was in the water, there was burning smell but the fish lived and so did the light. ive got some funny pet stories though.
